White & Chartreuse Bunny - Pike musky bass trout predator fly tying tutorial

  • Tying SBS and underwater swimming action on one of the world’s most effective streamer flies - and one of the easiest to tie. Whether you are a new fly tyer or an experienced dude, who just likes spending more time on the water than behind the vise - The Bunny Fly is a great choice for you.
    The backside is, that this fly holds on to a lot of water while casting, enough actually, to change your casting weight (fly line, leader and fly) a full AFTM class.
    Usually that is not a big problem with versatile streamer rods, and the benefits easily outweigh the disadvantage. So it’s no deal breaker in my opinion.
    Sometimes less is more, and this basic version only uses a hook, some tying thread and a rabbit strip. No flash, no eyes and no rubber legs. I tie other much more elaborate versions, with all those add-ons, but the basic Bunny is equally effective in many situations.
    Tie a bunch while you’re at it. Being a 2-minute tie, they pile up pretty fast. Try different colors. Every minute at the vise is well spent and will give you the upper hand on the water.
    Thanks for watching :0)
    Cheers, Ulla and Michael

    Hi guys. Just want to take this opportunity to tell you, that a lot is going on in this channel's community section as well. We make posts a couple of time each week, so drop by there as well. Earlier this week I posted some pictures of this Bunny fly, since I was stocking my own fly boxes for the pike- and trout season. Paul wrote this comment: "Would like to see a video on it. Great looking fly."
    And I was tying anyway, so I set up a camera - and here is the video.😊 Happy tying Paul... and everyone else. And check out that community section, ring the bell and all that jazz.😉
    Cheers, Michael🙂

    Don't take this wrong Michael but between the music on tbe back ground and watching you tie...it relaxes me and I sometimes find myself falling asleep. The music during your ties is very relaxing and soothing. Great pattern by the way!

      Haha 😄I find jig- and fly tying were relaxing, but to be honest... I agree, it can be a little bit to relaxing to watch. Cheers, Michael 😉

    Truly a thing of beauty in and out of the water. That's why I called it ambiguous yet tasty. It looks like a lot of creatures that a fish would eat. I second all the great comments below and your advice in the description. I see you use a sink tip, what type of leader and tippet? I've never caught pike fly fishing, only incidentally while spinning for walleye using jigs or hard baits. All came on at least 6 lb mono. Whenever I used a metal leader if I purposely fished for pike I didn't catch a thing, except while ice fishing with bait. Oh yeah, the "spaghetti western" music on Ulla's pike video was awesome! Thanks guys, always the best!

      Thanks Joe. Check out my comment to Hank regarding the hard mono leader. On the sink tip line and the full sinking lines I use relative short leaders: From 4-8 ft in length and no real tapering unless I fish places, where there is a great risk of getting stuck in sunken timber or other structures down there. When that happens, I will rather loose my fly than the fly line.😉Those wire leaders usually aren't a problem for the pike in my experience, but they drasticly reduce the chance of hooking zander and trout.
      I should make a full video on my reel/rod/leader, knot setup for pike fly fishing. Just might do that in near future.
      Oh yeah, Spaghetti Westerns. I went for that Ennio Morricone vibe on that story.
      Cheers, Michael 🙂

      @@MichaelJensensAngling Thanks for the info. I have a sink tip, haven't used it years since we fished for landlocked salmon up in the northern Adirondacks. It was a shallow section of the river and I lost too many flies I had bought at Fran Betters' shop. We learn by our mistakes, that setup I used would be better suited to a lake or deeper river. I have some Berkley Big Game line in 15lb test and other heavy test line I'll experiment with. I doubt I'll catch a monster like Ulla did but you never know :o) Years ago I did witness someone catch a monster pike, possibly a displaced muskie by way of the canal system, from the boat docking area off the pier at the river/lake outlet where I've fished for years. And thanks for the name of that iconic composer Ennio Morricone, a pai'san no less! Many thanks Michael, you're the best! 🥸🤌

      @@joeduca8582 Around here the sink tip and full sinking line is usefull for pike in the deep lakes this time of year. When the water warms up, a floating line and even popper fishing is effective as well. Yeah Morricone is a master. 🙂

      @@MichaelJensensAngling 🍝🤠👍More Morricone! Alright, more macaroni too 😋Yeah those locations make sense. There's almost 3 weeks left for the pike/walleye season here, ends March 15th. For me that means ice fishing, and those locations where I've fished for pike were shallow 10 - 15 feet deep weedy areas of the lake. On the bigger lake, average depth 22 - 25 ft, I've caught pike drifting a Muddler style jig over cobble off a point and the pike hit when it dropped off into deeper water. That was on May 1st, cold water. Another time was on Halloween, Oct 31st, casting shad lures at night for walleyes, relatively warm water of 15 - 20 deep. I guess it's all relative to water temps and type of lakes and I think it jives with what you're saying. Or I've drank too much coffee trying to stay awakeThanks Michael, love talking fishing

      @@joeduca8582 Check out the many videos about Morricone here on TH-cam. Those westerns wouldn't have benn the same, without his fabulous compositions. My favorite local lake is about 36 meteres (120 ft.) in the deepest areas. We seldom flyfish deeper than 20 to 25 feet, though - but choose the spinning rod and some jigs instead when fish are deeper. Oh yeah thougths of summer nights and night fishing really feels good right now. Temperatures in Denmark bounce a few degrees up and down around the freezing point right now.
      I guess i drink to much cooffe, every day of my life - but that is just another addiction.😉
      Always interesting and fun chatting with you my friend.
      Cheers, Michael 🙂

    Nice one Michael, not every fly needs to be overly complicated to tie in order to catch! 😉

    thx Michael another great fly tied by the master! its a great productive fly in south Florida for tarpon too. I fish the fly in black/purple in stained or off color in the everglades rivers w/a clear intermediate line. If tarpon are rolling and then going to the bottom of the river (8'/10') i will wrap some lead wire just behind the hook eye. most of the time thats all you need. also I like to create a mono loop to prevent the tail from fouling in the hook.🦖

    Nice one Michael! Beautiful action in the water! What do you use to prevent bite-offs from pike? I fish (mostly) bass and walleyes (zander) with large streamers and pike are a nuisance!

    • @MichaelJensensAngling
      @MichaelJensensAngling  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Hank. On the fly rod I use a short leader that has a tip of 0.60 mm hard mono - if i go directly for pike. If I fish trout, zander or perch (with the risk of an occasional pike) I use 0.35 mono. On the spinning rod or baitcaster i use coated wire leaders. Cheers, Michael 🙂

    How do you weight it? That zonker floats like crazy

    • @MichaelJensensAngling
      @MichaelJensensAngling  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Edward. Usually i don't. I like the neutral bouyancy, and I usually fish these flies on a full sinking line or a sink tip. If I want to use bunnies on a floating line, I make weighted versions as well: I use dumbbell eyes or bead chain eyes on those. But the sinking line unweighted fly is my first choise on most days. No matter what setup you use it is important to get the hair and skin totally soaked. If there's any air left in the materials, they will float.
      Cheers, Michael 🙂
