Ferrari 250 GTO '64 vs 3 Cobra's and 3 Shelby Cobra Daytona coupe's at Zandvoort!

Almost in the evening, Jan Lammers '88 Le Mans winner takes the wheel of a Ferrari 250 GTO '64 build by Roelofs Engineering. He takes on the Shelby Cobra's and Shelby Daytona coupe's, the main rival of Ferrari back in the sixties. Jan starts as 2nd but finished at 7th.
I believe the GTO is a recreation build on a 1963 250 GT chassis, there are only 3 of the real '64 model. But nonetheless, you can see this 250 GTO as the real thing only it is build by Roelofs Engineering in The Netherlands instead of Ferrari. Maybe it's even better made with modern tools.
Roelofs Engineering prepare and restore Italian cars, mainly Ferrari's from all over the world and are one of the best. At the Goodwood revival 2016 for example, Tom Kristensen won in a 250 GT SWB prepared by Roelofs Engineering.

I saw this act played out for real in 1964, at Nürburgring; the year the Cobras first visited Europe. We were in the grandstands across from the pits, and I got an education about how fast the Ferrari GTOs were compared to the Cobras. There was a moment when we saw one of the Cobras come out of the pits, with one of the factory GTOs right behind him. They both went into the hairpin at the end of the pit straight side-by-side, with Cobra on the outside. I heard them both accelerating up the rise behind the pit grandstands, and then I could just get a quick glimpse of the Cobra well ahead of the GTO going into the left-hand curve, before going out of sight. As they came around on the next lap, the Cobra was well ahead of the GTO, by about 200-250 yards. As an 18 year old American boy, I was excited at that sight! Alas, it was not to be! The Ferraris finished the race and the Cobras, for the most part, didn't. It was a race I'll never forget!

I built a FFR replica Daytona Coupe. Took 6 years and $40k. Which is cheap since brakes, motor, trans and diff are all Mustang sourced. I built the motor using the best Parts I could find for cheap, makes 353 hp at the crank and cost $2k. Brakes are SVT Mustang cobra 94-04 vintage. Weighs 2300 lbs and is like you can imagine a road going vintage race car. Frame is stronger than original and uses Koni coilovers.

If it's an original one that number would be closer to $50 million if not more. Some of the above comments suggest that this particular '64 is a recreation. If that's true, then it's just another wannabe to the Real Deal and worth nowhere close to bringing serious collector status money.

Volante79, thank you for the great video. These cars are rolling masterpieces, all of them, including the tribute (replica) cars. It truly brings joy to my life to see the owners of such valuable machines as the originals willing to share them with us in a manner so similar to their original purpose. I give the same respect to the replicas, which in this case are certainly built to a high standard to be allowed to participate. They give the event a feel closer to what it was like back then, and allow those of us of more modest means to be a part of the sport we love. The haters who call the tributes "fake" or "junk" are elitist assholes who give the sport a bad name. Granted, there ARE crappy replicas out there (maybe more than good ones), but those shown in this video ain't them!!

Not a real GTO I know, but not a "simple" 330 GT conversion either. I believe it's a 250 GT from 1963 (kentekencheck) build from the ground up to be as close as it can get to the real thing. It's like a technical statement from Roelofs Engineering to show what they can do. Next time I will ask one of the mechanics.

I doubt very much that the red Cobra coupe is the original CSX 2602. Looks like the other two Polish-made coupes. Alan Mann Racing ran 2602 at 1965 Le Mans with Peter Sutcliffe and Peter Harper. Mann prepared the car (under contract with Shelby) and acquired a Fillipinetti entry on the condition that he repaint the car Fillipinetti Swiss red and white. Mann had previously entered 2602 at Spa with John Whitmore in the normal Shelby blue and white. See the book The Cobra Ferrari Wars 1963-1965.

No the roof is inspired by the LM. But The LM is a mid engined prototype.

I would be far too afraid of scratching it. Just put around the track, no need for flame retardant suits. Things aren't getting that hairy.

Actually, 2 conras with tops, the cobra with the actual roof is a daytona....the predecessor to the daytona coupe... shelby needed some roofed cars for certain races so they quickly fabbed roofs to a few cobras.....hence thereforth the daytona, then the follwing year or later that year built the daytona coupe...... the daytona coups dominated the circuit and was probably the only car that could have beaten the gt40s. Believe it or not.

@this guy's name is Matt - I never heard any Cobra referred to as a Daytona except the 6 Pete Brock designed Cobra Daytona Coupes. The first attempt to make the Cobra roadster faster was to add on a fiberglass roof in hopes of improving the aerodynamics of the car, since the roadster wasn't good for much over 150 mph. That was the plan - it didn't work on the long Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans. That is when Brock designed and built the 6 Daytona Cobra Coupes. Those worked well enough to cruise by the Ferrari 250 GTO which was out of breath at about 185 mph. Bob Bondurant hit 197 on the Mulsanne, which he said was the fastest he had ever gone at the time. Yes, the Daytona Coupe was faster than the early GT40s, as they were still being developed. By 1965 though, the GT 40 was faster.

I wonder why you where dropping back after a good qualifying. But what a machine, can you tell us more about the GTO and the build? I know it's not a real GTO, but is it build like a brand new GTO? (zoveel vragen :P )

William Donnelly I'm wondering if they are some of the Mike McCluskey cars. He built 10 exact replica Daytonas on original Cobra chassis. They have CSX numbers and are in the registry.

@William Donnelly - The first Daytona Coupe, designed by Peter Brock, was completely built in the Shelby American, Venice, California shop. Quite ironically, the last 5 bodies were made by an Italian company, Carrozzeria Gransport, right in Modena! All of the chassis for the cars were modified Cobra roadster ones.
