  • FOSSA- Amazing Predator
    The Fossa or the Cryptoprocta feroxas (which is what the scientifically smart people call it), is the largest carnivore on the island Madagascar. Even though it eats the most popular animal that comes from that island, the lemurs, it still needs our attention and protection so that this important predator can continue to roam the 4th largest island in the world.

      Orenji Dubstep Madagascar, although I absolutely love it, is a cartoon for children, and it may not be accurate. Another thing is they spell it "Fusa" instead of "Fossa" Either way, the scientific name is Cryptoprocta Ferox, which is very odd. I like to pronounce the common name as "Foh-sa", that sounds better to me. Regardless of pronunciation, this animal is gorgeous and amazing, and I had no idea it even existed until today. I learn something everyday. :)

    Before humans arrived on Madagascar 2,000 years ago (during the Roman era), there were giant fossa, as well as lemurs the size of gorillas, crocodiles, giant tortoises (like the one in the Seychelles and in the Galapagos-note: Malagasy giant tortoises did not disappear until Europeans arrived), and the elephant bird, the heaviest bird that ever lived, and was up to 10 feet tall, which only disappeared a few hundred years ago. Moral of the story, humans kill megafauna, and now we're sad.

    • @zacharyklukkert
      @zacharyklukkert 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      the latest research says the first colonizers arrived closer to 10kya, so it wasn't just the presence of humans but probably some change in human behavior and/or a more recent influx of many more.

    Evolution is amazing. Through evolution, it becomes possible for two different kind of animals, that are not even distantly related like fossas and cats, to look all but identical, just because they fill an identical niche.

    • @patriciabclothesmore8695
      @patriciabclothesmore8695 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Vizioz Its called convergence theory.

    • @Salvus967
      @Salvus967 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Mike Vizioz Actually, both fossas and cats belong to the feliforma (cat-like) genus, which belongs itself to the larger carnivora genus(The one feature that all carnivora have in common are the presence of carnasial teeth). Mongooses, hyenas, cats, fossas, and some others all belong to feliforma. So cats and fossas are in fact VERY MUCH distantly related. However fossas are more closely related to mongooses.
      A better example of amazing convergent evolution would be how hyenas are part of the feliforma genus, although they look closer to dogs, which are part of the caniforma genus(The other great branch of the carnivora family). While hyenas are again more closely related to mongooses than anything, they are more closely related to cats than they are to dogs. They fill in the same niche as dogs however.

    • @mjohanss1975
      @mjohanss1975 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Mike Vizioz
      "not even distantly related like fossas and cats"
      Actually, his post contradicted what you said. Although neither feliforma or carnivora is a "genus" as he called them. One is a suborder and the other is an order. His point still stands, which is that the two are pretty closely related.

    • @jaimie00
      @jaimie00 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +tm2jetfire I think you're being a little too pedantic considering "distantly" is not defined by the OP. He said he agreed with the response, so his "distant" isn't as far as the respondent's. So, no, it doesn't contradict what he said.

    VERY interesting predator, one of amazing examples of convergent evolution in which genetically distant creatures become remarkably similar in shapes and functions. This creature , like clouded leopards, seems to possess powerful, stocky forearms for its size but may be with a bit longer muzzle(related to the number of teeth) and back than cats of the same size. I believe that arcaic feline species such as Proailurus might have looked exactly like this fossa.
    Thanks for an educational video.
