I still can't get over the idea that someone on their design team thought a giant, semi-transparent yellow circle surrounding a yellow number was a good idea for an aesthetic standpoint. It's really horrible looking.
See the thing is I don’t mind the dmg numbers at all, player cyberpunk with them, but the yellow circle behind the crit numbers definitely looks bad and I don’t want to completely turn off that while setting to not see that.

no doubt. This will go to my "get on sale" category
Game still looks like it has potential and could be really good if they polish it up. The combat looks pretty clunky though but it may feel more fun to actually play.
For a game that was in development for such a long time I was really hoping that obsidian would take this game to the next level, and while it does seem to be good like the outer worlds i feel that its a bit unambitious and small compared to POE 2 and even KCD 2 which is its main competition.
@@نونيم-ي4ح Obsidian have always made amazing RPGs, but I’ve never felt like they were particularly innovative in the gameplay itself. KOTOR 2, NWN 2 and New Vegas were built on top of BioWare/Bethesda tech, Alpha Protocol was very janky, and POE/Tyranny felt not much different than playing Baldur’s Gate 2 back in 2000. Compare that to Kingdom Come, Witcher 3 or Baldur’s Gate 3….these games made me feel like I was playing something new and exciting
@@XxW4RB0RNxX pretty sure they made a huge change in art direction from the reveal trailer to a year or so later when they started putting gameplay a little closer to launch. I think that's been a part of the story of this game's drawn out development
The first teaser looked like a comeback to the first game's darker art style, but it seems like they finally opted to remain with Deadfire's more luminous and colorful style. If the storyline is dark and mature, I think it shouldn't be that much of a problem. Fantasy doesn't always necessarily need to be set in a dark woodland. We'll see.
The game seems quite pretty, I love a colourful game but the combat weirdly seems a bit...weightless, floaty or something... It feels like you are slicing at the air in front of the enemy, and not actually hitting them. By contrast KCD 2 seems to hit harder, and have more weight in it's 1st person combat, it feels a lot less floaty. Avowed does seem a lot more in the Skyrim style...but something about it already feels little...outdated maybe? I hope the story and game are so good, that it doesn't matter in the end, but I'm hesitant.
2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2
yeah, thats because KCD actually simulates contact and physics of objects. Your hit does actually hit the opponent, you can even see where and how you strike. In this, you just do your animation, it plays out, it deals damage, enemy loses hitpoints and shows blood spatter animation in the air - and thats it. Number 1 rule of any meele combat for any dev is: HIT REACTION IS THE KEY. You can have best combat mechanics, but unless players get proper visual and audio feedback for getting hit on enemy, it will feel bland, hollow, worthless. On contrary, you can have really basic light, heavy, block mechanics, but if enemies can be knocked to ground, sent flying by uppercuts, staggered by shield bash, parried and riposted, it will feel great!
Yeah, I can't do it. 40+ with VRR should be the floor now. It doesn't fix everything but does fix most of the problems. 30FPS is just too low with modern high refresh rate monitors/TVs.
Yeah, 30 fps was fine until I got 60. I will never go back. I simply don’t play 30 fps garbage anymore. Makes me feel like I’m having a seizure trying to play a 30 fps game now.
30 FPS lock is a deal breaker for me especially if it can’t even hold that. Every time I have tried to play a game on fidelity mode I always switch back to performance. Even something slower like BG3 didn’t work for me since the dialogue scenes seemed noticeably choppier. Playability over graphics every time
Edit...ty for an honest opinion vs doing like some IGN type stuff. I want this game to be good but I'm really on the fence. It just doesn't look good in a lot of ways. Graphics and details in the world are pretty lacking imo. Combat looks mediocre imo. World looks too colorful and happy. I don't know....we will see I guess.
Right!!!! Dark Messiah of Might and Magic got it right in the mid 2000s...it's like this weird blindspot developers have where they can't or won't get first person melee combat to feel right.
@@Entertainment-ev6obwell it might not be the star of the show but it's pretty solid for being a first person "RPG" with how fast you move and jump and the feedback is good enough to feel nice. Definitely better than skyrim and the footage we've seen from Avowed based of weight and feel alone

@@ashleejones586 And you know the demo you got from the gaming magazine was the same thing the people writing the preview in said magazine experienced. So you could see if they were being honest or just bullshitting you
This game looks very nice to explore and the visuals are pretty nice. However, the more I watch/read on this game the less excited I get for it. First off, the price for this game is very disappointing. This is not a $70 AAA game, but does feel more like a modern $50 AA game; maybe $60 for the premium launch day access, but even that's a scam (more on that below). Now I am hearing that there is a stripped down progression system, 30 hours of gameplay which includes side content, and poor performance? Na, when I grab this game I'll be waiting until its $40 since I had to wait for after launch and I feel it should have been at the $50 price point. At least, that's my price point and I know other may disagree. I have a backlog to get through in the meantime. Also, I hate that people keep calling this "[X] days early access", when the reality is that they have the game available to be played on the day the supposed early access starts. There is no reason the game can not launch to the masses on that day. No, that extra 20 dollars is so you can play at launch. And if you didn't pay the extra money then you get to play it 5 days after the launch. This is a basic salesman scam practice.
Its sad when you mentioned the performance issues because Outer worlds (for me) had no issues on launch. Let's hope they can fully optimise the full release product.
it's all placeholder at this point. All the text in the game will go through many rounds of localization and translation before release, there's no reason to do any of that when it's still changing.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is how the critical hits have an exclamation point after them. That is really clever. The screen looks cluttered with the quest bar on the side.
I can see why people are comparing this to KCD2 (release date, first person perspective, RPG), but the settings are so different, I think the comparison is apples to oranges. KCD2 is in a purely historical fiction, medieval setting with only two combat elements for them to get right: melee and crossbows / early firearms. Avowed is in a fantasy setting with gods, monsters, and magic. They have to combine not only melee and ranged weapons, but also a variety of spell effects and the ability to mix and match. It just seems obvious to me that one of those two combat systems (and worlds) would be a lot easier to perfect and get running smoothly.
Not worried about performance particularly because that’ll change up to (and after) release. Also, playing on PC. I am also worried about the combat though, and I really want to want to get it, as I loved the earlier games, and the world they created.
It actually looks more fun from the footage you showed vs. the little bit I've seen previously. I would rather they made another POE game, but I will definitely play this and probably enjoy it... I'm sure I'll be wishing it was a true POE3 the whole time I play it, though.
Cutting all the varied classes from pillars down to the basic fighter, rogue, wizard is really kinda sad. Balders Gate 3 shows that Pillars style isometric rpgs with deep quests, stories and maps definitely have an audience. I dont know if this skyrim lite direction is going to work out for Obsidian.
@@ZainAhmad-jl4vt because playing a godlike is already restricting you in an rpg. The character isn’t even voiced so you are not getting a Geralt situation. Being a character with crap on their face is just dumb.
@@ZeroHxC07 you can customize how obvious your godlike features are going to look and that would effect your how character percieve and treat you. You have a story in the game, and being a godlike is a part of it,. even the courier of new vegas had his own tale behind him.
I think I'll enjoy Avowed since in these types of games, I love the exploration and dialogue more than anything. As long as combat is serviceable and isn't complete dogshit, it's a buy in my books.
I hope they tweak magic combat based on your observations. IMO, game’s with solid exploration are awesome. Elden Ring’s way of rewarding exploration’s amazing, & SotE’s a bit more empty… but sometimes the reward is an amazing view ❤ As for 30FPS, I’m okay with that. My first computer ran WoW at lowest graphics, & 30 FPS was a dream, LoL 😄
I think the idea behind the wizard "class" is that it is meant to be hard, and complex, at the start. Then gets stronger as you do. Look at PoE 1 and 2. Wizards were rough at the beginning, lots of resting, constantly running out of spells mid fight. Then look at those wizards end game. A sword will cut and stab, for a certain amount of "damage", whether you are a child, or a master swordsman. Sure a master swordsman is better, but the sword "damage" doesn't really change, just how effective you are. Wizards get stronger with practice, and dedication to the arts. The best RPGs(IMO), have always had wizards being weak at the start.
I am excited for this game. Love POE and the lore. I heard from other reviewers you may be able to change to 3rd person view? Interested to see how that plays.
As long as I can turn off those damage numbers, yeah, I'll definitely be giving this a try. The PoE world and lore are fantastic, so I'm always down for more.
I'm excited for this game, although 75 percent of that is due to the story and world established in PoE 1 and 2. I expect combat to evolve slightly as you level up and get more powers/interesting equipment. Starting as a level 1 mage in most CRPGs for example feels a bit underpowered, but usually by level 6 or 7 you start to see them come into their own especially when you add enemy damage resistances in the mix.
I am looking forward to this game. The character design looks better than Veilguard and rather than suffering story to get to combat like Veilguard, Avowed has a little combat suffering to get to good story and actual roleplaying in my roleplaying game. Add in that I use a mouse with a full numerical input on the side so i can cast on the move and it seems like a hoot.
I'm really looking forward to this. I didn't play Pillars as I'm not really into CRPGs, I prefer 1st or 3rd person. With that said, didn't they say this would have a 3rd person choice?
Im a little concerned with the combat in this game, it does not seem natural or good, especially the wand... hope for the best tho because i love both pillars of etternity.
Did you actually mean contrast or saturation? Personally, I don't mind high contrast, but heavy saturation is a turn-off for me. I like a muted canvas with certain colors popping. Like, for example, only seeing vivid colors with magic.
I loved PoE I and II and really didn't like Outer Worlds (very easy, combat wasn't fun) so I'm torn on what Avowed is going to be like. The UI is also very garish, IMO, though not as bad as what I saw of the new Dragon Age.
I’m hoping that this game turns out well. I really enjoy Obsidian games. The Outer Worlds was a wonderful, contained experience. I am not expecting a 10/10 game, but I am looking forward to playing it. I love exploration and a good story.
Ugh I LOVE this franchise, but ooph that price tag!! $120AUD for the bog standard version is... A lot. It breaks my heart but I'm going to have to wait on this one until I see full clear reviews. If it's as short as people are saying I just can't justify it regardless of how much I want to play it. 😞 Re the story being better than the combat, I'm ONLY here for the story so I'm happy to tone it down to easy until it's balanced. Obsidian generally do some heavy tweaking post launch so I'm expecting day 1 to be rough. I just hope they do the lore justice, I'll be very happy if they nail 3rd person too, because I can't with the FPS. I'm really looking forward to this one but the price tag is my sticking point. It's VERY steep.
I get that performance issues are a reason to be a bit pessimistic and I agree it is quite discouraging, but I would have faith in the team when it comes to balancing combat. There are still 3 months before release and they have said that they didn't need the extra time, it was a corporate decision just to space out releases so they are going to have 3 extra months to polish and tweek
The animations are really good and snappy, they've taken inspiration from skyrim combat mods. Hit-stop and clear feedback. The hitmarkers are kinda unneccesary because its very obvious when an attack lands.
@@Lucitaur On the contrary, lore wise Godlikes are sometimes met with courtesy if of celestial heritage, but mostly distrust by common folks, especially when born with death marks.
10 seconds into the video and omg the UI is utter garbage. 30% of the screen is taken up by that junior web designer doodoo. Also, 30fps in 2024... Need I say more.
I kinda envy you. By the time I played Skyrim I have played so many infinitely better games it took years and a heavily modded game for me to finally trudge my way towards the end. IMHO one of the most overrated games in gaming history, but I'm truly happy for people who have experiences like what you describe.
I got used to Elder Scrolls combat as a way to push the story I was role-playing in the universe, and a fun opportunity to experiment with its systems, even though it is not good. As long as this game has that expansive world where you can role-play your character and find your own story, I can forgive the suboptimal combat. If the world is bland like some of Obsidian's have been (ex: The Outer Worlds), I'm definitely going to feel aggravated by the combat. So yes, I'm now a bit more cautious about this game, and will wait for more in-depth reviews that touch on the role-playing systems and lore, otherwise likely getting it when it's on sale.
I'm replaying Deadfire and that made me hyped for avowed because the scenario and Obsidian writing is so good, but I'm also worried thet have to downscale TOO MUCH because of the action RPG direction they chose. I also don't like the xbox system so I'll jsut buy on steam, so hopefully it's worth the full price at release. I'll wait until some trusted reviewers do their work, no pre-purchase (and I'd prepurchase pillars or eternity 3 at the second it was available).
Didn't even know this game was a thing. POE 1&2 are some of my favorite games I've played in the last decade. The story and world stuck with me long after I finished them. I not sure I'm liking the feel and look of this one. I've never been a fan of the floating damage numbers in a single player game. Also, get a MMO style mouse and the 1-9 keys for casting will never be an issue....
Yeah i know Avowed will be a fail when IGN says the Ranger class is the best way to play this game 😬, no thanks but i would play Pillars of Eternity 1-2 again over Avowed.
I feel like the mage may finally make me use the extra buttons on my mouse! But the delay was a bummer, but will allow them to polish the game each time people tear apart the footage obsidian has addressed the issues. So I feel like they will use the time to polish and use the community input.
Regarding performance: I'm pretty sure (just from the footage in the video) that the game is using some kind of real time raytracing. This might be software or hardware based, I don't know that. But real time lighting of that quality level is still quite expensive and not perfectly implemented in many engines. There are a few other things that might lead to the bad performance, but I'd bet that the lighting is a large chunk of the cost.
Damn that beginning with the words popping up super aggressively makes it impossible to focus on anything else on screen. Super glad that stops after the first 30 seconds or so.
It's crazy that they decided performance should take a backseat after we have seen developers get shut down entirely after putting out games with poor performance; because they are not salvegable after people already decided they suck. Even crazier still that they apparently made the decision to not care about performance very early on: they set a target for 30fps with no intention of going to 60. It's so wild. It's like they are stuck in 2009 or something. I wonder if they understand this will cost them a lot of players that would have otherwise been interested. I am one of them. Easy pass for me.
What developers have shut down because of poor performance lmao? That's something you made up. Developers shut down because gamers expect way to much, games get bloated as fuck price wise and gamers bitch about below inflation prices.
In terms of performance I think they have time to get to the bottom of it until they release. I didn't know it'll be close to KCD 2, that's rough as I'm very interested in both games...
Looking forward to it but I hope Obsidian is able to return to it's previous format with PoE. Don't mind ARPG's but they often comes with heavily watered down systems.
Weird how all the B-Roll footage is combat based but the game is supposed to be mostly a narrative driven one. I am not completely sold on the combat yet, as it looks oddly stilted. Will have to wait and see!
They should delay it again for a month or two and hire some for just optimization. It really seems like Obsidian really needs more people optimizing their 3D games these days.
I love PoE and PoE 2. Really hope that they can get a combat system that works and feels good because tbh I hate the combat in Skyrim. It feels like when you're a kid and you're literally just smashing action figures together. There is no depth to it at all like in Dark Souls for example.
6:40 thats been my concern. I've been hoping they wouldnt dumb it down like Bethesda did with Skyrim. Its one of my biggest issues with skyrim. Theres a balance of complexity to simplicity. Microsoft owns both obsidian and bethesda. Why not cater further TES titles to more simple gamers (since they already started that with skyrim) and leave Avowed/Pillars titles to those of us that like the complexity and depth? Ive been hoping Avowed would essentially be Morrowind 2.0. If it could have the combat of oblivion, but everything else morrowind, itd be phenomenal. I've looked forward to it from a Pillars fan perspective. Ive said many times they could easily dethrone TES if they dont dumb things down.
Ok i dont like some of the animations and colors particularly on the acid spray but the combat look solid. Although saying that Flink Locks should do APE damage then take an AGE to reload.
I am happy to hear that the Avowed is staying true visibly and story wise. Back to visually, I think what is chuging the FPS is all the attention to detail visually. For the programmers I hope they can fix that and have the game able to run at 60fps or higher BEFORE launch. I would love for RPG that I play to have an amazing battle tactics, to it, that is complementary to the world it is based in. What I am getting at is games like the Witcher and "I" would say like Hogwarts Legacy, because in that game there is a counter spell for spells going in your direction and for mini bosses you can potentially wipe the floor with them if you time your counter attack correctly. I love Tactics and counter attacks that both the player and enemy can use if possible. Now, Now, that is just my thoughts flowing out of me freely but really I am grateful and MORE grateful that Avowed is true to Pilers of Eternity Deadfire Narratively, visibly, audibly etc etc woop woop
Sounds like I'll probably love it, eventually, once it comes to ps5 and goes on sale. Not because I don't appreciate the devs, nothing like that, because I'm a working father who doesn't have a lot of money or time left over when everything's said and done.
Devolper have said that Xbox S is keeping them back from really stretching their muscles. I most likely gonna wait for review to see what they say as I'm not sure I can do a Skyrim now a day.

@@mattm7798didn’t know that. Is this just an educated guess based on years of playing video games or what?

I still can't get over the idea that someone on their design team thought a giant, semi-transparent yellow circle surrounding a yellow number was a good idea for an aesthetic standpoint. It's really horrible looking.
I heard you can turn the damage numbers off but still, the UI in general looks terrible imo.
Good thing I never play with damage numbers 🙂↔️
See the thing is I don’t mind the dmg numbers at all, player cyberpunk with them, but the yellow circle behind the crit numbers definitely looks bad and I don’t want to completely turn off that while setting to not see that.
What bothers me more is that you have a mini map, so why have these red arrows all over the screen pointing at the enemies.
and the number font is extremely fugly
KCD2 definitely seems like a better buy for Feb.
I like Grounded games more anyway not a fan of fantasy but KCD2 as game looks better either way. There is also a massive amount of fantasy games lately so gamss like Kingdom come, Mafia old Country and even GTA6 as Modern crime game will all stand out more in 2025.
no doubt. This will go to my "get on sale" category
@@Ronuk1996 I don't see enough difference between kcd1 and kcd2.
There is no definitive better here. Buy both or the one you like more.
@@taylan5579it does look little bit better but i rather improve in mechanics and be stable. Vegas was just ‘the same’ but was best rpg there is
Game still looks like it has potential and could be really good if they polish it up. The combat looks pretty clunky though but it may feel more fun to actually play.
Wow, I just noticed congrats on 1M subs, well deserved!
I'm really starting to think this is being developed by the B team, Sawyer isn't even involved apparently.
I'm still really hoping they can shore this up. The PoE games have such great lore and PoE2 especially is one of my all time favorites.
This is one of those games where I'm less hyped the more I see. Really wish they never switched the art direction :(
They never changed the art direction it looks like deadfire
@@XxW4RB0RNxX pretty sure they made a huge change in art direction from the reveal trailer to a year or so later when they started putting gameplay a little closer to launch. I think that's been a part of the story of this game's drawn out development
Same...the initial trailer looked like Elder Scrolls 6, and then we got gameplay footage and were like, oh it's like ES4
Outerworlds art style looked like ass, so what made you think this would be any different?
I hope the story and game are so good, that it doesn't matter in the end, but I'm hesitant.
yeah, thats because KCD actually simulates contact and physics of objects.
On contrary, you can have really basic light, heavy, block mechanics, but if enemies can be knocked to ground, sent flying by uppercuts, staggered by shield bash, parried and riposted, it will feel great!
there are hit animations on enemies no different than in kcd
@@ZainAhmad-jl4vt they are nowhere near that level. They play some random stagger animation, completely disjointed from the attack
Valid statement
Are we watching the same footage?
After playing games at fps over 60 fps returning to a 30 fps will feel like watching a slide show
Very dramatic
Playability over graphics every time
Man, I built a new PC last year and got a 144hz monitor, fuck 30 FPS, 60 is the bare minimum😅
What I can't wait for, is the amount of builds you will come up with. Love this channel. Always my go to channel and website.
This is the first video I’ve seen that makes me excited to play avowed. The exploration looks incredible.
2024 and developers still can’t get first person melee combat right. Has absolutely no weight.
Right!!!! Dark Messiah of Might and Magic got it right in the mid 2000s...it's like this weird blindspot developers have where they can't or won't get first person melee combat to feel right.
@@mattm7798 even mods for Skyrim have made combat solid. Ridiculous

@@peterk2735 yuuuuuuupp. god, I miss those days
5:24 - There's a "Skeleton Preist"? Maybe they should also spell-check their monster names before release?
God forbid humans make mistakes. I'm sure you've NEVER fucked up in your entire career.
@@loadishstone And that on an unreleased game! How dare they do that?
it's all placeholder at this point. All the text in the game will go through many rounds of localization and translation before release, there's no reason to do any of that when it's still changing.

KCD 2 releases a week before and makes this look like a 360 game.
Sounds like it genuinely needed the delay
Definitely
@@XiLock_Alotx it needs to start from scratch like bloodlines 2. All of this games are corporate garbage. 0 soul, terrible decisions.
Looks great. I am sure I am going to have a blast with this game. Thanks for the preview.

Elden Ring’s way of rewarding exploration’s amazing, & SotE’s a bit more empty… but sometimes the reward is an amazing view ❤
As for 30FPS, I’m okay with that.
Its the game where the dev said 30 fps was good scary statement
Will this have a monthly subscription, or free to play after you buy it?
Semper Fi!
Keeping it real
I can do with Avowed while waiting for Elder Scrolls 6
another high contrast game.
developers should hire camera crews and editors to tell them how good lighting and color correction looks.
Did you actually mean contrast or saturation? Personally, I don't mind high contrast, but heavy saturation is a turn-off for me. I like a muted canvas with certain colors popping. Like, for example, only seeing vivid colors with magic.
There is literally nothing wrong with it, it’s an art style they’ve gone with. Not everything has to be dark and drab.
I loved PoE I and II and really didn't like Outer Worlds (very easy, combat wasn't fun) so I'm torn on what Avowed is going to be like. The UI is also very garish, IMO, though not as bad as what I saw of the new Dragon Age.
What you say about the mage being difficult to use surprises me, as it was pretty powerful in Skyrim, or at least with the builds I created.
That worried me too but the Wizards looked just fine on the extensive video Enfant Terrible posted. I don't Fextralife knew how to play as a Wizard.
I’m hoping that this game turns out well. I really enjoy Obsidian games. The Outer Worlds was a wonderful, contained experience. I am not expecting a 10/10 game, but I am looking forward to playing it. I love exploration and a good story.
Well, that's a bummer. I was very excited to play a battle mage in this game. I really hope they figure this out by launch.
Did you mange to pull a Barve at least twice?
Ugh I LOVE this franchise, but ooph that price tag!! $120AUD for the bog standard version is... A lot. It breaks my heart but I'm going to have to wait on this one until I see full clear reviews. If it's as short as people are saying I just can't justify it regardless of how much I want to play it. 😞
Re the story being better than the combat, I'm ONLY here for the story so I'm happy to tone it down to easy until it's balanced.
I'm very excited to play this game
I get that performance issues are a reason to be a bit pessimistic and I agree it is quite discouraging, but I would have faith in the team when it comes to balancing combat.
There are still 3 months before release and they have said that they didn't need the extra time, it was a corporate decision just to space out releases so they are going to have 3 extra months to polish and tweek
The animations are really good and snappy, they've taken inspiration from skyrim combat mods. Hit-stop and clear feedback. The hitmarkers are kinda unneccesary because its very obvious when an attack lands.
I am pumped for this game and I hope the extra time in the oven makes it worth while in the end. Lets go Obsidian!!!
Wait, did you say you have to play as a Godlike?
Seems like this will be yet another game where the player is the chosen one and will have their ego wanked on each step they take. >_>

Narrative will make or break this game. Can't really judge the game until it's beaten.
I literally listened for Stealth Archer as I was tempted to re-install Skyrim or FO4.
Baldurs gate 3 + skyrim ? sounds cool
The performance issue is a complete puzzle to me, this game is far from looking next gen and yet it is what it is... What the actuall hell ??
I hope they fix the hud, it feels like I'm playing overwatch or something but worse. Definitely not what I'd want from a game like this.
I can't wait. This game looks amazing.
Damn. Thank you for the review. I think ill wait for a sale
Looks janky, but I expect it to be fun and I love Obsidian's writing. Just not a day 1
In terms of performance I think they have time to get to the bottom of it until they release.
I can't wait to play this in third person view!
Interested after reviews.
Ok i dont like some of the animations and colors particularly on the acid spray but the combat look solid. Although saying that Flink Locks should do APE damage then take an AGE to reload.
This video made me more interested then the gameplay demo.
Hopefully it is good for modding
Sounds like I'll probably love it, eventually, once it comes to ps5 and goes on sale. Not because I don't appreciate the devs, nothing like that, because I'm a working father who doesn't have a lot of money or time left over when everything's said and done.
