Can Depersonalization come back after recovery?
The prospect of Depersonalization coming back in the future can seem VERY daunting. It may have been caused by weed, trauma, even a panic attack. But what's to say that you won't have another experience like that and find yourself back to square one?

This is exactly how I was feeling too. I didn't do any research even tho I felt like I was losing my mind because I was scared that what I would find would just confirm my fears that I was losing my mind. I struggled a lot with anxiety and panic attacks as a kid and I believed that I got over that and so when this started occurring, I didn't fully believe that it could be caused by anxiety as well. But that's the insidious nature of anxiety. It poses as whatever you're most anxious about.

Hello Shaun and everyone else reading!
Just wanted to leave a little message of encouragement to anyone who is suffering from depersonalization.
I had a really bad weed experience back in december of 2019 and it left me with intrusive thoughts, depersonalization and derealization, which is a terrible combination. At the time I didn't know what any of those experiences were and what they meant about me as a person, I was terrified of the thought that I was going mad and that weed had sort of "unlocked" something in my brain and that I was going to turn into a psycopath and harm the people I love and myself. I was so so scared of ANYTHING, I was also certain that there was something wrong with my body, I paid too much attention to any type of pain I felt and assume the worst, I remember once my elbow was hurting a little and my first thought was "I knew it, elbow cancer it's the way I'll die" which now sounds completely ridiculous but at the moment I was so frightened by it. Of course none of that actually happened and now I feel like myself again, never harmed anyone and I'm as healthy as a lettuce. I had actually forgotten about DP for a long while and remembered it after seeing this video on my feed.
I know how lost and scared you feel and how dark everything may seem right now but please believe me that it DOES get better, you WILL feel like yourself again, the DP manual helped me a whole lot and it sped up my recovery tremendously, understanding what was going on in my head and why I was feeling what I was feeling helped me so much. Something else that helped me a lot was to be more active, going for a jog, lifting weights, going for walks, climb mountains, be in contact with nature, basically anything that made me feel more connected with my body. I'd recommend to find any new hobby that is physical and makes you feel your body.
As for the intrusive thoughts I found a book that also helped me understand what was going on with my head, its called: "Overcoming Unwanted Intrusive Thoughts: A CBT-Based Guide to Getting Over Frightening, Obsessive, or Disturbing Thoughts" by Sally M. WinstonMartin N. Seif. They explain really well what intrusive thoughts are and aren't, and they give you strategies to overcome them.
Thanks Shaun! I feel like myself once again and you were a big part of it.
To anyone struggling with DP/DR or intrusive thoughts, please believe me that it does get better, understanding the conditions and why they are happening was my first step to recovery.
If anyone feels like they need someone to talk to about this leave me a message, I'll respond as soon as I can, or we could talk through whatsapp as well.
I wish everyone a speedy recovery, you got this!

You're a legend mate. I had it come on after excessive drinking. I quit alcohol for 9 months and was afraid to drink as I was fearful it would trigger the DP. Now my relationship is much better with alcohol and I can drink again with no DP. If you're reading this you will recover, trust me. I did and I got it and went through the brunt of it without even knowing what it was. Embrace the feeling if it ever comes, don't be afraid. Like any emotion and feeling, it comes and goes.

Secondly, I know DP can be frightening but remember that it's just your body and brain's natural response to stress and anxiety. It's not permanent and it can't hurt you. You can and will recover. Make sure to read through all the info and articles on my website at www.dpmanual.com

Thank you very much for this video. Everything that this man is saying is completely true. I have gone through every stage. Mine was a cannabis induced panic attack and paranoia that led to it.
I have been on SSRIs for a long time now and on a very low dosage. 5mg Escitalopram and less. I have recently also felt it coming back due to unknown reasons. I actually tried to lift big weight at the gym, been drinking alcohol at the same day and the day after I knew it was there. However , previously i was scared of that feeling of being disconnected or in a brain fog. Now, I have already made peace with myself, knowing it will go away, and I live with it until it does. I am writing this knowing that a lot of people obsessed on topics and forums are looking for people " like themselves". It feels good knowing youre not alone and that youre the only one that has it. I hope my message helps a single human being, cause I was so desperate back at the time for help. Acknowledge it, stop fearing it, live your life, socialize and youll move on.

But I'm really grateful for your manual because I wouldn't even be able to manage the second time without it 😊

Over the past two months I have had feelings of DP. As a 19 Y/O medical patient who uses cannabis to help with Epilepsy, Depression, ADHD, ODC, etc, I smoked pretty much every night for about a month straight after receiving my Green card, Mainly indicas because I like the body high and almost healing feeling it gives.
One day, I might have been more depressed than usual and figured I'd smoke something stronger, a Sativa my step-dad grew. I knew little about it, but I thought I knew it would get me feeling back to myself.. little did I know of the power of Cannabis in a state like that.
I had a full blown Drug-Induced Psychosis episode from just pot! It was definitely more of a Schizophrenic experience as I was hearing voices commenting on things I was doing, only for about 10-15 mins. After that I then realized that I don't even feel high, just like I'm in a dream state reality almost. I felt that same exact feeling, every day for 2 weeks after that. In those 2 weeks I was obsessed with Google answers for what I was feeling (not realizing I was making it worse).
By the end of the 1st week I was certain I had, or was developing schizophrenia (even though I only had that experience one time on pot). End of the 2nd week I start having Auditory Hallucinations when I'm falling asleep or just waking up. I read that these are actually fairly common so I didn't put much thought into it, Until I started having Sleep Paralysis when I would wake up and Panic Attacks at night.
Then I thought I had some sort of permanant Sleeping disorder now.
I see now that Depersonalization can cause many anxiety driven thoughts. And my ADHD, and ODC definitely don't help when I get intrusive thoughts like that. It has been 2 weeks since my last Panic Attack but still get Anxieties throughout the day.
Focusing on what I need to do each and everyday has been helping me keep my mind busy. I'm glad I got to write this, it feels like a little weight has been lifted. I look forward to more of your videos!
    Thanks for reading!

If this channel wasn't there I wouldn't have any hope that I would recover any time soon because of people saying they had dp/dr for about 6-9 years and you won't be same after recovery your perspective would change etc but you on the other hand said the exact opposite. This might sound a little crazy but I like practicing letting it come on and I just let it come like a big wave of the ocean and I picture myself just standing there and letting it have me but, I continue on with my business in hand and it fades away because I didn’t give in to the fear.

For anyone struggling out there with dp/dr. You will be okay. Trust me just keep yourself in prayer and keep moving forward just know that dp/dr will go away on its own of course the only thing you can do is to keep going on with your life and you will eventually come back to normal. DP/DR is just a temporary situation that is based off a traumatic experience. Always remind yourself that you are really every day and you will get through it. All is way stay true and blessed.

I experienced DP after a bad drug experience, completely recovered on my own after 2 years and then it came back a few months after I recovered. It was worse. I couldn’t believe how much worse it was. It was because I was going through some stress, and a bit of anxiety started popping up here and there. Then I got sick and was put on steroids. That absolutely set me off again. Its been a couple months that ive been through this the second time, I feel like im recovering quicker than last time but it still feels like forever. Last time (during lockdown) I stayed in bed for MONTHS. Now im actually getting out. These past few days have been so relieving, I still have a bjt of the dreamy feeling but the anxiety and panic attacks have resided for the most part. Though it happened again, and was arguably worse, the recovery has been faster.

I first experienced DR when I was 15 after a night's long bad trip from weed. In time I learnt to live with it and to ignore it, I got on with my life and have accomplished plenty of things since then, even though it was kind of always there in the back of my mind. Sometimes it would pop back up and try and persist but just ignoring it usually made it go away. I am now 24 and have been suffering from very intense DR for the past month. It's so much worse than it ever was before, so much so that I feel like I am going mad, competely losing my mind, my concentration/memory... The feeling is so intense that's it's impossible to ignore it, therefore I obsess over it, and start thinking perhaps I have some other medical condition making the DR symptoms worse (like tumour, brain infection etc) but blood tests and MRI all clear. Or that perhaps getting older / cognitive capacities diminishing make the DR feel worse.
It came back out of nowhere, during a time I was utterly happy and loving life. I think the irony is that the DR came back because of the DR. One day the brain fog was somewhat worse than usual, and instead of dismissing it, I let it get to me, started panicking, and was so afraid that the DR would come back or get worse , that it did. I have now been stuck in a vicious circle and negative spirals for over a month and don't know how to stop the anxious feedback loop.
That being said, watching your videos is very reassuring. Today I have felt a little soothed for the first time in weeks, and have gained a little hope. Thank you.

Bro it happened a couple years ago after a bad trip (which could be due to some laced weed because it wasn’t mine) but Honestly it’s just a simple mental blockage. You just have to not focus on it and once you stoped focusing on it it will wear off like it was nothing. My depersonalization lasted for 3 months. People will say that it’s a problem but they are always focusing on « I’m I still high » or « Will this change my mental forever » or « I’m not the same anymore ». If you just carry with your life do some sports and focus on one thing at a time and stop thinking about « I’m I ok ? » you will return to normal just like I did. I’m currently 19 years old, still smoking weed from time to time and studying in architecture in college. If I could do it you can do it! Just stop thinking about it! 💪

Hello Shaun! So I have this question. Ive smoked weed about 4 months ago and mixed it with alcohol, which caused a very bad trip and very bad DPDR ever since. After 3 months, my anxiety faded away, because I completely distracted myself and then I saw big big progress for 2 weeks. I was about 90 % better, but then my progression stopped.
The following 2 weeks after that it hasnt changed. Its like things were real and all, but my memory was still very blurry, my eyes were not always focussed, and its like I became dumber and couldnt concentrate on things. I couldnt understand basic concepts anymore. When I watched psychological anime that I always loved, I couldnt understand anything which annoyed the hell out of me. This has caused me to get scared again, and now its almost like day 1.
My brother suffered from DPDR for about 4-5 YEARS and is still the same as me. Im scared that its something genetic with us, since we don't really have anxiety.

you do still have anxiety. Thinking about the condition and contemplating about every symptom is Anxiety. Remember that every time you have too many intrusive thoughts, that is a symptom of anxiety. Anxiety is not only the feeling of fear that you feel in your stomach but also contemplating and catastrophizing. Stop doing does things and you will recover 100%. Keep distracting yourself and destroy the loop of thoughts in which you are stuck in. I hope you see my reply. I am someone who has completly recovered from dp/dr.

    Hey man
I recovered from weed induced dpdr (had a panic attack because of being "too high"). It happened around 3 years ago an it took me a year to fully recover, your videos have helped my a lot through it thank you so much. My question is if it's possible for me to smoke weed again (I did it maybe two times after the recovery, the last time was one year ago). Can it cause dpdr to come up again, like I'm a type of person who should stay away from cannabis completely because I'm likely to suffer from these conditions induced by weed or is it just fine when I'm careful about the dosage so I am able to avoid a bad trip?

    • @Dpmanual
      @Dpmanual  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hey Philipp, glad to hear you've recovered and that the videos were so useful! 😊 So ultimately the decision is up to you. I do know of people who have made complete DP recoveries and who have safely gone back to smoking weed. However, I would strongly recommend that you avoid weed and other drugs completely at the very least until you've made a complete and 100% recovery. Once you've recovered from DP and understand what the condition is, it's a lot less likely to return as an ongoing condition -- because if you ever happen to encounter the feelings again you will recognize them and can allow them to pass naturally. If you do decide to smoke again, I'd strongly suggest trying a weak strain or small amount at first, and seeing how you do with it. Again, the decision is up to you but please do exercise caution. Hope that helps!

A MESSAGE FOR PEOPLES WITH DP ( YOU CAN FULLY RECOVER JUST MAKE A VISIT TO A NEUROLOG, psycholog, even psychiatrist and be patient, pills are effective after 10 days, before 10 days you gonna start feeling that you are going worse, but actually you are not.)
i had an horrific anxiety and panic attack, due this i diagonsted with DP, for 2 and a half month i recovered full as normal.
How, first of all don't be conceited ( in term: i will pass this by my self ) because what are you doing is you are telling your brain "look we have to fight this thing" but unfortunately you are making it worse because you cant fight it by yourself, also trying to fight it by yourself can last for months or years, i have one of my friends which is ( it will go away by itself ) but it's been 9 months for him and it's still there.
What i did is: I went to a neurolog doctor i described everything with no shame end he gave me 2 pair of pills ( 1 is to feed brain because DP is doing damage to the brain this is why people with DP are confused when they see theirself in mirror ) and second is against anxiety and panic attack.

Sorry I haven't watched the full video, but I just wanted to add a few thoughts. I've had several episodes of DPDR over the last ten years. It has gotten better and then come back. The current episode that I'm in I believe was caused by getting off birth control, and actually hasn't been accompanied by nearly as much anxiety as past episodes have. It's more of a nagging annoying and frustrating feeling than one that is causing me to panic, because I've been here before and know I've gotten better. So I guess all I"ll say is this time I've been able to keep anxiety and fear of DP to a minimum, but it's still plaguing me and it's getting really annoying. I'm going back on birth control to see if that helps. But I agree that it is so much better than the first time around, when I thought I had a brain tumor or was dying.
