William Basinski unveils A Shadow In Time

- Legendary ambient composer William Basinski premiered his new piece A Shadow in Time - For David Robert Jones at London’s Union Chapel last month.
FACT spent the day with him as he pieced together his gear and prepared to kick off his European tour. He tailored the space to suit his needs, working with the sound engineers to make sure the audience would hear exactly what he had in mind.
The performance itself was a marvel - captivating from beginning to end as Basinski performed to a silent audience, manipulating tape loops with masterful precision as stage lighting flooded the venue and displayed its magnificent windows magically.

All the ppl saying he’s pretentious.. I just laughed. He’s gay, he is very theatrilcal and funny. It makes an interesting counterpoint to his music. I personally love it and it makes his music more “safe” for me. I wouldn’t like if he was some sort of “very serious guy” talking technically about his very serious music.

Dude, a self-confident, self-loving and expressive gay man, amazing musician, impacted so many lives. He is self-referential and yet clearly comfortable in his own skin. He has a body of work that he can refer to. I think he's also a funny, cheeky guy. We need to support all that, not deride it. I bet he would be so fun to hang out with.

Well a shadow in time original loop was re recorded to a double sided piece of new tape, he then proceeded to edit it using abbleton I believe... all this he has mentioned during interviews. Now the debate regarding disintegration loops is about if there was a real decay on the tapes during digital archiving, he mentioned he only added counter melodies on the first two pieces and for the rest he stopped doing that... the fishy question is if/how all those tape loops turned out to have the same age and physical state to decay in all recording sessions... some people say they were digitally edited as well.... but Idk and I dont care, disintegration loops is beautiful and I love it as is...
