Jose Carreras, Plácido, Fisichella are very good don't get me wrong but Luciano is a legend, no one compares to him. I never got the chance to ever witness him live but I'm glad we have the internet to watch/hear him as many times we want.

I became addicted to classical opera after listening to his performance on a CD borrowed from a friend in 1999. My wife couldn't believe that I was moved into tears by the beautiful music and Pavarotti's voice. I bought a DVD that has this performance in Modena in memory of him when he passed away in 2006, but eventually it was lost during the relocation of my home. So great to refresh my memory today hearing his powerful voice filled with passion. The one and only Pavarotti! Worth mentioning is that Nuccia Focile makes a great pair with Pavarotti in the show in Modena, her voice is soft and tranquilizing in comparison to the masculine tone of Pavarotti. I'm grateful that I lived the time to enjoy their vocal art.

Absolutely, he can drop a key or raise it, I am not interested, the pure natural glory of his voice is unequalled. Fellow tenors claim he had a lovely light, lyrical voice. He had a natural tenor register but his depth and tone and power could never be typecast. You will hear contemporary tenors with amazing ability, but Luciano is the most satisfying tenor in his unique sound, of all time. Nobody can ever sound close. He reinvented the tenor and every operatic singer should look to him as the mould breaker.
Hamish Blakely ...I agree however by definition he was a Lyric-Tenor, his upper register was unrivalled but his middle and lower notes where less impressive and lacked the depth of other more darker sounding Dramatic-Tenors.
Hamish Blakel, have you heard Pavarotti (young) singing Verdi's Requiem- Offertorio? Or Ingemisco? See link, FIRST LINK, go in about 4 '40 seconds in the Offertorio, in Gorgeous beautiful sound. Mezza Voce. He didn't always incorporate (mezza voce) it enough I thought in later years. Incredible resonance. Also his Ingemisco-second link

when she looks at him at about 3:20 my heart just melts! its like he is giving her everything he's got and she is breathtaken by his emotion. its hard to explain but its one of the greatest moments ive ever seen .

I had not seen this film recording before today and frankly it had reduced me to..
It is just so beautiful and his voice here is in lovely condition.
There have been a number of good new tenors since Pavarotti's death.. but in my lifetime, I do not believe I will ever hear one to match him, and never surpass him.

Have you heard Jonathan Antoine yet?... I honestly believe in a few more years when his voice becomes fully seasoned he'll be as good as Pavarotti was, potentially better even and believe me when I say this nobody is a bigger fan of the late master then myself.

Incredible for 58. I saw him in D.C. the following year. It may have been her as he was promoting new young artist with him. He did transpose this aria down as that is a B, not a C. He sang the same key in D.C. Nothing wrong with that, Bjoerling also did the same as did many tenors in their 50’s. Takes nothing away from the aria at all as most listeners would never notice. It’s the beauty of the tone that people enjoy.

Gustavo is right about Luciano Pavarotti; when I listened to his singing one night during sleep Luciano Pavarotti came up this old country road in a chariot with one horse to our farm where I was standing in full view watching him as he turned some distance down this old country road: he was standing up holding the reins to control the horse much like a king of Egypt in their war chariots and he came up to me in the front and spoke to me he had on blue jeans and an old shirt and was a young man in his late 20's . in another dream I was singing to a multitude of thousands . . it was the voice of Luciano Pavarotti and I took notice of how beautiful this voice is and I will never forget how this in- foldment of a person can move you spiritually just as the spirit of an old book can affect the future of your life. Just as music can take you from the mundane, obnoxious realm , to a more heavenly existence that does support long life and higher more conscious experience where the evil of this world can not come.

The king for ever
This is 10 years past another live Opera performance (also available on youtube) and it's just as good. It's light years beyond his '86 version in solo concert. So expressive, full, supported and controlled, at age 58 (which is outrageous).
I heard him in the Verdi requiem in march 94 and he was marvelous. That glorious legato and breath control were all still present.

Watched La Boheme last week in Copenhagen. Have seen it before, but I always cry when Mimi dies, even when I know it's going to happen. The first act contains the aria "hits" like this one, the 2nd is where Puccini really tugs at the heart strings and can make big hairy vikings like me cry. ;-)

So many beautiful songs from this magnificent recording and now this is all that's left, at one point I saw the concert on DVD but could not afford it at the time, I have the CD still, and I treasure it like no other.
