WHY I QUIT DRINKING ALCOHOL: My Struggle to Get Sober in College + Advice for Giving Up Alcohol

  • I quit drinking alcohol just 6 months after turning 21. In this video, I share why I decided to finally quit drinking at 21, my struggle to get sober in college, and advice for giving up alcohol. The college binge drinking environment allowed me to hide my drinking problem in plain sight. I denied that I had a drinking problem for so long because I wasn't even of legal age to drink. I could see how much alcohol was damaging my life and yet I could not give it up. About 8 months ago, I made the decision to quit drinking for good. It has been the hardest, yet most rewarding experience of my life. I have struggled, slipped up, and even relapsed, but I am now just over 6 months sober and could not be happier. Quitting drinking in college is definitely not the norm, but I have been learning how to navigate my new life without alcohol.

You can't control alcohol, it controls you. It's not your best friend, it's the two-faced one. Better off without it, and make new friends.

This is extremely real folks. I’m 32 years old right now. I was a jock in High School but me and my buddies were drinking and blacking out when we were 15-18 years old. Somehow I was able to make it through college while living in downtown Chicago. I got into Investment Banking and had a full blown meltdown when I was 27 that lasted an entire year. I had to go to rehab. It took me 3 years just to get my life back. I went from working in Investment Banking to working at Target. It was horrible. I totally quit drinking and am back in Banking and don’t touch alcohol. I just cant. It’s extremely common and most ppl won’t admit they have a problem their entire life. If you think you have a problem or can relate, talk to a doctor, you can kick it but it takes a serious level of courage. I’ve got two years under my belt now if sobriety, and just made my first million dollars two months ago. I went from homelessness to a millionaire all just by quitting booze. It is poison for me and I’m going to have to fight it my entire life. Stay strong to whoever is trying to kick it. It’s just as bad as heroin except it’s an even slower death.

I must be one of the luckiest people on the planet. The history of my life can be captured in the metaphor of a man passing through a wall of flames, strolling, casually, as if to savor the experience. So has my relationship with alcohol been. I had my fun, took my risks, then quit a year ago while I was still ahead.

Omfg it’s scary watching this because a lot of the stuff you say is exactly what I’ve struggled with my entire life. The guilt, the shame, the hangovers that turn into benders. The blackouts. Trying to figure out a system to moderate but never really knowing how many drinks you’ll have once the first one goes down. It’s uncanny and I think you’re really brave for putting this kind of content on yt. I’ve struggled heavily with my alcohol related depression for the past year and my subscribers keep asking me why I’m not uploading as much. I’ve been scared to answer them because I don’t want to admit that I’m not perfect and don’t know it all. After a 45 day break from drinking, I’ve once again failed to keep my commitment and this last weekend I had a terrible bender with bad decisions and atomic hangover included. I made the mistake of trying to moderate again and I’m ready to admit that I can’t do that successfully and that it’s time to give total abstinence another run. I’ve been binge watching videos on this subject all night to try to figure out how to deal with this shit and yours have been the most helpful. Thanks for making them.

Hi James! It sounds like our stories are pretty similar. I'm glad you were able to find my videos and relate to them. It definitely makes posting them worth it when I get comments like this. I am sure your audience will understand if you open up and be vulnerable with them. Sometimes that is just what people need. You never know who you could help. Getting sober is a hard journey but it's so worth it! Cutting alcohol out of your life will not only benefit your health but your career (and your videos)! I've found that I have gotten more passionate, creative, and inspired since I quit drinking. Thank you for being open with me and best of luck to you 🤝

@@stephmstill I am definitely considering posting some content related to my alcoholism to create accountability and also to help other people. I’m conflicted though and haven’t decided yet. I’m scared that I’ll fail or embarrass myself or chase away my audience with content they didn’t sign up for. For now I’m just going to focus on racking up my first 30 days again. I downloaded the I am sober app today after telling my family I’m going sober, and will be picking up some literature on alcoholism once I’ve exhausted the low hanging fruit on TH-cam. Then after I gain some confidence I’ll rethink it. I’m only on day two rn so the self loathing is still fresh. Thanks again. Maybe I’ll come back and update later.

The sneaking extra drinks, doing embarrassing stuff I had to find out from my friends the next day, the Hanover anxiety. It was all horrible! A lot of my family are alcoholic and as much as I hated it growing up, I didn't mind drinking for myself. But as I get older, I hate how I feel drinking and how much it changes me overall. I've drank socially for most of my life, but during rough times turned to it as well in negative ways. A lot of my friends drink in excess and I really don't see my life that way anymore. 16 days sober here ! The crazy thing about your story is that I was sober through most of my 20s (alcohol just wasn't a part of my life since I became a mother at 20 and full time employee/part-time student) it wasnt until my late 20s (27 +) that I developed a problem with binge drinking that escalated to functional alcoholic and finally a covert alcoholic at 34. I think there is shame attached to telling people you love of the problem but for me the biggest reason I dont tell my loved ones that I am on a sober journey is becuase I am afraid of publicizing the journey and then failing at my attempt. I am a very sucessful woman and im afraid to fail in piblic if that makes any sense. I hope to gain the courage to tell someone one day... Anyhow-Thanks for posting! Love and support from Houston!

i’m 22 and i’ve also quit alcohol. i live in nz, and our drinking culture is pretty extreme. i was blacking out on the reg from 16-19. during lockdown, i realised i hated drinking. i didn’t actually enjoy partying, i hated not knowing what had happened to me when i was blackout, and i hated being a sloppy liability. and with all this considered, my level of drinking was still considered “tame” in comparison to most other uni students!! like wtf
i’m now out of university, working full time, and i’ve realised i just want to be fully sober. alcohol doesn’t serve me. it is lonely - it’s so hard to socialise and meet other girls my age without drinking. but i feel a lot less alone after watching this, thanks

Blackout, intense anxiety, drink in the morning thinking it will help, end up drunk again, repeat. I have had issues with alcohol since I started drinking in high school but the last 2 years were especially bad. When you described thinking that blacking out was how everyone drank, that was my perspective also for a long time. I’m 99 days sober today and therapy and sobriety have made my life so much better. Congratulations on figuring this out so young, it took me until 31 to really admit I had a problem. This video reaffirms that anyone who thinks their life would be better without alcohol should make the change and quit.

I’m 19 right now and I’ve definitely gone through periods where I showed a lot of signs of addiction to alcohol, but then I got a lot better somehow (not perfect, but I made good progress) and I’ve been more interested in the idea of being sober increasingly over the past few months. I still drink occasionally and I’ve binge drank about 3 times in the past 4 months. But my boyfriend right now who I met about 5 months ago is an alcoholic and he really doesn’t want to go sober. It’s pretty severe in his case but I don’t want to give him an ultimatum or somehow try to force him to quit bc I just don’t believe that is going to work. Being with him is actually the reason I stopped using alcohol in a really bad way on my own, because it scared me to see how alcohol has affected his own life and I knew I didn’t want to end up like that. But, I still have addictive traits and if I go out with him and he drinks, it makes me really want to drink too, and I usually do, and then I don’t have as much self control to moderate his drinking or my own. I’ve talked to him about going sober (in reference to myself) and mentioned that it would be difficult for me to do that if he is still drinking at this rate, and he says he will cut back but then he hasn’t cut back really. I actually ended up getting pregnant and then having a miscarriage at 10 weeks, and I only found out I was pregnant at 8 weeks, and the fact that I’d been drinking in the time I was pregnant unknowingly, is horrifying to me. That whole situation really changed the way I see alcohol and I stopped wanting it altogether (I started having aversions to alcohol which helped) but it got me thinking about my health in general and how I do want kids someday and I want them to have the best health they possibly can, and even if I’m not pregnant anymore, I can’t just live like this and keep destroying my body slowly over time. But it’s the same with him. I want him to really cut back on the drugs and alcohol because I knowwww it’s gonna affect both his fertility as well as his literal lifespan. Alcohol is just a really toxic thing in our relationship and I don’t want it to be a part of it anymore and I think I really do have a chance of leading a healthy life, but idk how to do that with him. It makes me doubt the relationship a lot and ughhh it’s just been really difficult.

Hi Steph! Thank you for telling us your story.
At the end of 2019 me and my family suspected that my 23 year old brother had a drinking problem. He would drink all day everyday. Wake up drunk and fall asleep drunk. He would act very aggressive towards us and even though we tried to tell him he would always defend himself and manipulate us in a certain way, like most alcoholics do. On February 2020 he finally decided to get himself into a rehab facility, we were so happy and proud of him because he finally realized he had a drinking problem. Christmas 2020 was kind of a nightmare because it was his first sober event and it was really hard on him. Luckily he didn't relapse and has been sober ever since February. Almost one year sober. Just for today.
    Addiction doesn't discriminate.
    Greetings from Mexico!

Congratulations! Warning: I stayed sober for 3 years from age 24-27 planning to never drink again with a joyful heart about it. Please trust me, I most definitely should've stuck with my decision but instead had to learn the hard way... During those three years sober I went to bars a lot and was around alcohol with no problem at all whatsoever without any temptation at all. It is 100% willpower in a way of renewing your mind with positive self talk such as telling yourself things about how grateful you are to be sober, which from my experience always kept me sober. If you are a Christian think about what God says to us about being sober minded and why? What kind of man to do want to marry someday? What example do you want to set for your future children?

I knew I was a alcoholic when, I was 22. I carried on drinking alcohol until 25. I would drink throughout the whole day and night. I would wake up with a nasty hangover and I’d continue to drink. I would even drink alcohol at work! I was going through depression and other things. I’ve done embarrassing things when under the influence of alcohol. I’ve done and said things I regret.
I knew I had to stop drinking alcohol, because I could feel my body changing, I would shake, my heart rate would increase. I gained allot of weight also. I’m very great full that, I had my family and friends support. But the only person that can change you is yourself, your family can only support you. It wasn’t easy, I did relapse multiple times. But I’m now 25 and decided, enough is enough. If I don’t stop I will die. Alcohol is slow poison, makes you do crazy stuff! God bless all the addicts out there. ❤

So often I see videos of people acting "drunk" and doing outrageous things and saying things which don't align with themselves as a conscious person - to the point where they are unrecognisable, including criminal activity - BUT THEY AREN'T JUST DRUNK, THEY ARE ACTUALLY NOT PROPERLY CONSCIOUS . BLACKOUT drunk doesn't mean "on the ground moaning and passed out" - it means the lights are on and no-one is home. You're moving around and speaking, "consenting" to sex, getting into arguments, crime, dangerous situations, being offensive - and having zero memories about it. Literally NOT BELIEVING what you're told you were like unless it's recorded and played back to you.
It's rare, and misunderstood. And the best thing to do is not to partake if this is your experience of what drinking is like.
