High hour John Deere 7410 cold start after 0°F. night

  • I'm publishing this video to provide an example of what quality engineering and good maintenance can do. This 7410 has just over 18,200 original hours on the engine. To date it has never had more then regular oil changes (every 150 hrs), water pump, thermostats, and valves adjusted. The injectors are all original as is the injection pump. In addition the batteries are original! The batteries are 16 years old and still capable of starting the tractor in the dead of winter.
    The tractor had not been started for just over two weeks and had sat through a 0 degree F. night. I had to cycle the intake heater twice before it started but the simple fact that it will still start in this weather with over 18,000 hours is a feat. As a general rule we plug the tractor in as cold starts like this are hard on the starter and batteries not to mention the engine.

    it may be a durable tractor but, props to whoever in the world made those batteries as well as they are durable to last 16 years and still crank the tractor at that temp. Those are some strong batteries. Honestly I don't think it was too hard of a startup for a diesel at that temp with all that original parts and that many hours.

      I expect one day I will go to start it and they will be flat dead. The tractor ran 7 days a week until I purchased it which I'm sure has a lot to do with their lasting so long.

      well yeah I could see that running it everyday is just like most peoples cars they drive to work and on the weekeends doesn't really have a chance to sit around and go dead

    18,000hrs and I didn't even hear a fast skip while cranking (indicating a low compression cylinder) very nice tractor and video my friend. It's nice to see these old girls taken care of.

    I love the sound of a tractor cold start

    An impressive feat . I was not so sure she would come back on after distinctly hearing that draw down and no re-fire. But I was glad to hear it get its second wind and cough out the black smoke we want to see. Love it. My grandfather bought a 4020 back in the early model years and I have fond memories of spending time in the cotton fields with him . Those model years are so loved they are worth a ton more than when they were new. Take that mahindra.

    The 7000 series, and their 7010 series tractors were among the best JD ever built. Aside from that, you've got to go back to their 30/40 series tractors to find products that last forever.

      Pretty much any of the soundgards are crazy reliable. We have a 4455 with 7700hr on it and she uses negligible amounts of oil and has never been touched. The newer 8000/10/20 series are pretty good as well. We have an 8200/8420 that are in the mid 5k range that have never been touched either.

    Clearly you take care of this. I can tell by the way you let that starter rest between attempts to start. Many people just lay on the starter. Best wishes for many more hours of service.

    The problem is that we probably whont see any john deeres from 2020 around after 18000 hours to cold start. Let's see they make 8000 h before the quality wear out.

    1999 model John Deere batteries must be some damn good ones I had a big John Deere I guess you called garden tractor had like what part of town car battery on it and that was a 99 I still got that battery on a car I'm driving right now it is never went dead and that's pretty damn good actually I work in a battery Factory for years for exide they damn sure can't build a battery last that long that's why they're out of business now

    Oil change every 150 hours? No wonder it has never been overhauled. Although the money spent on the oil are exceeding the price for an overhaul kit, I bet.

    • @Ethan-ck6iz
      @Ethan-ck6iz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's a great tractor but I'm sure a big reason why it's still going so strong is how well this guy maintains his stuff, with the 150hr oil changes, the original batteries presumably well maintained or there's no way they'd last that long... Even the way he cranks it over when starting

      They made it about a year after I posted this video. The tractor ran seven days a week up until I purchased it. I think that has a lot to do with why the batteries made it so long.

      Jake Gerth That’s actually a 7410 parts tractor. I’m currently working on swapping the MFWD from the parts tractor to the one featured in this video.

  • @glengallonag

    hi there, does this 7410 use much oil between changes.

    • @Agtech4020
      @Agtech4020  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is my big tractor so it does primary and secondary tillage as well round bale. I would say it goes through around a gallon of oil in 150 hrs.

    Block heater is hanging right on the side if block not being used. Plugging it in makes too much sense I guess. They'd rather put all that unnecessary wear on batteries and starter.

    • @Backwoodsmachinist
      @Backwoodsmachinist 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or maybe you dont have the whole story or cant fucking read. He said that a part of the circuit for the block heater was shorting out. He has since fixed it and that he would have preferred to use the heater in this situation. But you are obviously a certified keyboard mechanic so you must have known that already right?

    That’s one way to ruin your starter, turn it over till it smokes a bit and repeat. By cranking it excessively you’re gonna blow the starter

    • @Agtech4020
      @Agtech4020  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I absolutely agree however I will note that the nature of intake heater starting aids requires a lot more cranking before the heated air is drawn into the engine. I normally would never start the tractor like this but the whole purpose of the video was to prove it would start without being plugged in with almost 19,000 hours on it.

      @Agtech4020  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Jake Weisenbec At the time the hydraulic charge pump inlet heater that is part of the block heater circuit was shorted out. I have since replaced the faulty heating element as I would much prefer to use the block heater in this situation.
