Yeah this explains a lot.. Our minds often times tend to paint our lives in a certain direction that we follow sheepishly, forgetting that we own our minds and thoughts; so most times we create the negative energies around us and also the positive ones.. Thank you Scott 🙌🏾

Wow, that was a wonderful insight you had! And so well described! Thank you for reminding me why I can't stay away from the monastery

Very nice video. I done something similar where I spent 5 days at a Trappist monastery. But watching your video, I have to say a very nice work. Thank you for sharing.

How did you reach out to the monastery? Did you practice Buddhism before? And do you have to become a full monk if you go, or can you choose how long you want to practice there?

You should try a weekend, then a week, then a month, and have teacher and advisors at the monastery tell you when you are ready. You never have to self identify as Buddhist. You do have to follow the rules and work the schedule. You can leave anytime you want, but you make commitments to hold a work position, so being mindful of others and losing self centeredness is key…. You have everything you need already within you, you will need community to help you awaken to that.

Do you just want temporary escape ? If that's your intention take a week retreat, but if you really wanna learn in-depth Buddhism you have to take courses.

I originally tried to do a 10 day Vipassana Meditation Retreat but they are quite challenging to get into due to the high demand of people applying. A friend of mine had told me about Monasteries so I had searched Therevadin Buddhist Monasteries in Canada and started applying. The first one would accept me due to my history of addiction but when I applied to ARFH (Arrow River Forest Hermitage), they graciously accepted my application.
I did not practice Buddhism before, no. The entire reason I got into meditation, believe it or not, was from a very large dose of medicinal mushrooms.
You do not have to become a monk to stay in a monastery if you go. You would be what's called a Layperson. Laymen and Laywomen are simply people who meditate that are not ordained as a monastic. Laypeople help keep the monastery operational as there are numerous things that monks are not allowed to do.
As far as how long you stay that is entirely up to the discretion of the monastery. For example, I originally planned to stay just one month but after about two weeks into my stay i realized I was going to need a lot more time to do what I needed to do. Next thing i knew an entire year had passed.
Sorry for the extremely late response!

@@scott.johnston i've been spending a lot of time trying to look inward. using reading, meditation, and quiet time to figure out how to control suffering i'm creating. It's so funny, i've been toying with the idea of looking into a monastery - not really to visit or stay, just to research and see their routines -- I then see you just responded to this comment FOUR hours ago and it answers my questions too. stars aligning.

    John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
