    Though I repeatedly mentioned I am not a videographer or cinematographer, I have received numerous requests for me to do a basic video shooting tips using Olympus OM-D cameras. I did work for Olympus before and I know a few things about the camera, so I thought why not share what I can, and I am sure some of the information may be useful. I am still learning when it comes to video shooting part but I have also gained some precious experience doing videos here in TH-cam, and surely it has been quite different since the first video I made in June 2019, a year ago.
    Basic video shooting tips:
    1:14 Use Dedicated Movie Mode on the Mode Dial
    2:48 Fn Lever as Shortcut for Movie Mode
    4:17 Olympus Flat Profile or OM-LOG400
    8:27 Movie Image Stabilization Mode 1 vs Mode 2
    11:18 120FPS Slow Motion FHD

    Some updates on current situation in Malaysia (11 June 2020)
    The lockdown situation has improved and we are allowed to move about now. Also public filming and photography shooting are now no longer prohibited (they were specifically in the banned list of activities during lockdown). Hence you see some B-Rolls in this video being shot at public locations, and yes they made the video so much better.
    I have one or two more videos being shot from my tiny balcony, and I promise after that, we have more videos filmed in more interesting locations around Kuala Lumpur. I cannot wait to go out and shoot and share what I can with you beautiful people. Please do bear with me for a little bit longer.

    Another tip is that when you have the mode dial set to movie mode and you press OK you can use the INFO button to toggle the super control panel to more of an old school camera settings menu. Another tip is that I use the lever on my Olympus cameras while in the photography modes to change between S-AF and C-AF. And when I have the mode dial in video mode. I have the lever programmed through the video menu, button dial lever, dial function, M so that with the lever down in position 1 the dials are ISO and FNo. And when the lever is up in position to the dials are Sutter and Mic Vol. (And since I don't use program mode for video I have the dials programmed for video P mode so both lever positions for the back dial are headphone volume, and the front dial to be microphone volume.) My normal video mode is manual, with the lever in position 1, so I can change the ISO with the rear dial and aperture with the front dial on the run.

    Thanks for the tips Robin. I didn't know how to turn on the OM-LOG400. Now, thanks to you, I know.
    I wonder why Olympus hides these useful features...
    When I was making the first movie ever of my kids egg hunting on Easter, with my EM-1 Mark II, I attached the Olympus EMA-1 microphone that I used to use with older E-M5 and Pen E-PM2 for better audio and, when went to watch the video it was all mute. I went to investigate and the power to the microphone was disabled by default. I was soooo angry... I wonder why the team responsible for turning on and off these features makes always the worst decision on what critical features should be left on our off.
    Thankfully we have you and other great Olympus visionaries to help us.

    Thank you Robin I always find your videos interesting and informative. I have recently just purchased a second hand EM1 mark II ( only 1024 images captured ) its in really good condition and I thought I might have a go at video with it. I usually use my camcorder for video capture and not my cameras. I own Pen F ( I love it ) Original EM1 and I had the original EM5 until it died hence the new purchase of the EM1 mark II ; ) Thanks again Take care : ) Teddy

    3:15 I like that explanation Robin! The function lever looked a bit odd to me because it surrounds the AEL/AFL button. It implies that is connected to those functions - but it isn't then!

    One more tip. With the Olympus M1 Mark II, and maybe other Olympus cameras. There's a secret menu that's difficult to find. Named audio record settings. You get to it by pressing menu, video menu, movie with the little microphone symbol, on, then a little drop down box opens up that says off and on, and there's an arrow to the right when that drop down menu highlight is at on, if you press your right d-pad that goes to your audio record settings menu.

    • @tomfenn7149
      @tomfenn7149 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's exactly this which really annoys me (and thousands of others) about an otherwise brilliant camera system, the really difficult to navigate especially when in a hurry, menu system. I really do hope the new owners of Olympus address this somehow without removing the versatility of the device.

  • @hauke3644
    @hauke3644 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for your tipps! Only for the first one I have a question: Is there any possibility to enable auto-iso in video mode? I like to use that (in combination with an ND filter, if necessary) to set my video exposure, because I want to set the aperture according to the desired depth of field and the shutter to obey the 180° rule, so there is only iso left for automatic exposure adjustment. In M mode that is possible with my OM-D cameras, but not in video mode. About flat and log profiles: Since Olympus cameras only allow 8-bit recording, at least in theory, these profiles could lead to banding effects when the contrast of the scene is enhanced too much. So in these cases (and only then) using natural profile might be better.

    Thank you so much for this useful Video Robin. One Question, when i shoot in 120p Slow Motion Mode, which Shutterspeed must i use in the Camera? 240? And if i want to mix a Video with Normal 1080p Footage with Slomo 120p Footage, what are the best Settings? 1080p 60fps and 240 Shutterspeed?

  • @MarcusRow

    hi Robin, thank you so much for making this video, just curious as to how I get the Flat Profile on my EM-5 Mk 3, since from following your instruction (where I believe you demo it on an EM-1), after setting Picture Mode to 'on', when I subsequently open the Super Control panel, I can't change the Picture Mode to anything except what's already displayed - it looks the same as in your video at 10:57

  • @AerialLensVideo
    @AerialLensVideo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    THANK YOU SO MUCH - I have only the M5 Mark II but most of these settings could be found - Yay!
    However, why does the MovieMovie change my focal length? For example, I have the Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 set for 7mm, but the image tells me it is narrower, at 9mm. Why? How can I get the full 7mm? This happens in any movie resolution it seems. I am confused why the lens view is narrower than desired. Oh, and I cannot seem to overide "Auto ISO."

    Hello @Robin Wong,
    I am big fan of your videos and proud owner of OMD EM-10 Mark II.
    Here in the EU we have a video camera tax law which leads to the European version of Olympus cameras haveing a Movie reccord limit of 29 minutes.
    This limit does not fit my needs to reccord 1 hour long videos with my EM-10.
    Can you tell me a workaround on how to reccord longer videos. I cannot go and press the reccord button every 29 minutes, ad it doesn't make second movie clip after te first is done. No problem to have separated videos. I just need full coverage of the whole reccording session.
    Thank you in advance.

  • @MLee-vcrr
    @MLee-vcrr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video. I would like to know if there is any way to record single video files? Vers. 3.0 was a major selling point for me but no reviewers mentioned that files have to be "stitched" together later in post from 2GB files( NO, it's not my SD cards). I also noticed that even when recording in C4K, the bit rate is no where near 237Mbps, it's more like 100Mbps average. Perhaps Olympus can address this in a future firmware update? Overall I'm happy with camera but I wouldn't have made a purchase if I had known about these limitations. Keep up the good work!

    Using my EM10 Mark II, my channel does toy reviews and all videos done with my camera. Unfortunately, my camera model record under mov format so i need an app to convert it to mp4 format. If I record with my speech it is good. But if I record video on front facing like Robin does here, which is further away from camera, it will capture other sounds too. Sadly i think my camera have no microphone port plugin. Not sure if wireless/bluetooth mic can be set? Hmmm...

    Hi Robin, great video & thanks for the tips. However, I think Olympus should put the camera into proper video mode regardless of the mode the camera is in. If the P/A/M does nothing to the video, then why don’t Olympus switch the camera to video mode and negate human error? Do it via software - should be a easy fix to the firmware
