  • In a groundbreaking move for 2023, Mazda has breathed new life into the rotary engine by kick starting the production of an all-new Wankel motor. Featured in the Mazda MX-30 R-EV, this modern marvel boasts a jaw-dropping fuel efficiency of just one liter per 100 kilometers-a record-breaking low in fuel consumption. But that's not all: Mazda has set its sights on reviving the iconic RX sports car series, with the Mazda RX-9 likely being the frontrunner in this resurgence.
    00:00 What's in the video?
    00:23 Important story about Wankel in the year two thousand twenty-three?
    03:09 How does it work?
    04:25 Mazda resumed production of rotary engines in the year two thousand twenty-three!

    Can't wait! This sounds very exciting! On another note, the hybrid engine should be available for light aircraft or even a 6 place General Aviation aircraft with a twin engine set-up. Huge on torque and continuous running power, low on fuel consumption and simpler to overhaul, it definitely can become a game changer for GA. Kudos Mazda, what a lovely effort!!

    The Liquid Piston rotary engine is a vast improvement over the Wankel style rotary. The LP engine is basically the Wankel/Mazda rotary turned inside out. Instead of a triangular shaped rotor and a peanut shaped case, the LP engine has a peanut shaped rotor with three tip seals on cusps in the case dividing the case into three chambers. With stationary tip seals, there is no longer any issue with getting oil to the tip seals to keep them lubricated. Say so long to weep holes and high emissions not to mention the need to constantly refill the oil tank to replace the oil that is consumed keeping the tip seals lubricated.
    Also the shape of the rotor and case results in a period at TDC when the rotor seals the combustion chambers in the walls of the case at the moment of ignition so that combustion occurs at a constant volume. This result is a much higher pressure increase due to combustion than a spark ignition engine. Combustion is largely completed before the combustion chambers are uncovered and the power stroke begins. Because of this the thermal efficiency of the LP engine is far higher than the Mazda type rotary. So instead of a rotary engine getting less mpg than a piston engine, the LP engine will deliver even better mpg than the best current piston engines.
    One thing it does share with the Mazda rotary is that the power to weight ratio is much higher than a piston engine. So the LP engine would make a much better range extender engine that any piston engine. And with a much higher thermal efficiency than the Mazda rotary but with the same or higher power to weight ratio it will make an even better range extender engine than the Mazda.

    • @pauldatche8410
      @pauldatche8410 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well that's not a problem; the problem is, what's their strategy to getting it to wide market adoption or use? Why are they not getting it up and going with some new vehicle or old vehicle manufacturer, in a hybrid combination or pure form? It could by now have been deployed in the general aviation sector at least, given its extremely wonderful numbers and of course the great possibility of accessing VC funding in America as compared to other countries. So the problem might not be the engine itself, but rather the founders who may be ill advised on how to push their invention to market as highly needed. Making paydirt is great but if nothing is forthcoming, it'd be better to be more realistic on their patent pricing approaches, get more innovative, collaborate with developers etc and have long drawn returns when outright purchase pricing is too high.

    As a petrol range extender to an electric car is a great idea due to a single rotor design . But as a pure rotary engine in a car no. My memory of driving an RX7 was no torque in the engine you had to rev the nuts of it and of course down goes the fuel economy. Very smooth though but high oil consumption.

    Chasis of this size don't make sense, because the engine's so light. Even if you make it 2, 3, 3.5 liter. Which will give 600, 900, 1200 hp. Rotary engines only make sense on a car like sesto elemento, or with a supercharger.

    Bit like comparing a 1970 petrol engine to todays sky active 2023 engine. So if you compare 1970s rotary to what the video is about it quite believable that a purpose built constant speed engine would reach 1lt per 100 km the improvements in materials manufacturing and design would mean it is possible. If so it would be a real game changer for Mazda.

  • @pixelnazgul

    Don't make another skyline (or even worse GT-R or lfa) with a non-existing engine, or in the wrong place. The engine feels right and simple when you weight-shift. The chasis doesn't. You need a spindle point. And the needed weight changes with the aplication.

    My understanding is that a constant RPM is the exact best way to get maximum efficiency and longevity from a rotary engine. This, then, would seem to be the ideal way to employ a rotary engine in an automobile…as the motive force that drives a generator that produces electricity for electric motors that actually propel the vehicle. And a very significant aspect of that “efficiency” is the fact that this particular RPM will elicit maximum fuel economy from the Wankel engine. Maximized fuel efficiency and minimized wear…that’s what it’s all about.

      What I'm saying is their claims are not back up by factual evidence.
      If you look at my device it's back up with evidence of a increase in thermal efficiency..
      It delivers a cleaner burn and a more complete combustion of all the fuel consumed, which improves power / fuel consumption and reduces emissions.
      You can see the the improvement by the reduction of soot production..
      Without Green Vapour Draw engines require emissions control systems to reburn partially burnt fuel or trap soot.
      Most engines leave black soot in the exhaust tail pipe.
      Soot is unburnt waste fuel.
      Less soot is a thermal efficiency increase increase.. thats hard proof.

    • @Enter-wl3zf
      @Enter-wl3zf 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Not really. Both the Wankel and Liquid Piston designs consist of a rotor inside a housing and were discussed by Wankel back in the 50s. The manufacturing methods did not allow production of the liquid piston design back then.
      You can think of the liquid piston as somewhat of an inverted Wankel. It’s way more efficient than the wankel and more efficient than Diesel and Otto cycles. Furthermore the power density is even higher than the Wankel. The latter is very power dense - Rx7 using a 1.2l Wankel competed with 3l BMW and 5+l muscle cars back in the 80s.
