    All my questions are answered in this video. I always thought of buying a compact thumb drive for sentry recording and it occupies less space in glove box. After watching this video, I learnt that its not regular thumb drive, its a mini SSD drive that Tesla made as thumb drive size. OMG. Thank you so much. :)

    Great video. I got the same drive a year ago. I got it for storage space but also because I was hoping it would clear up the video glitches that appear on Sentry mode clips. Unfortunately my Sentry mode clips still have artifacts which is odd because manually saved dashcam clips do not: odd because they are supposed to be the same file(s) just copied to the Sentry folder. One thing to note is that Sentry mode is always recording even if it doesn't create Sentry clips. So if something happens with no Sentry events, you can still get to the past hour of footage by looking in the "Clips" folder (if the event was within the past hour).

    Hello Dave, enjoy your video's keep them coming. I've been considering the same upgrade of this video but have eased the pressure on the trigger (if I may) because of recent video's and articles I've come across mentioning the power usage and heat generated by these SSDs. A group of Tesla owners are recommending to use a micro sd reader with a micro sd card 256gb to alleviate this problem. Is your T7 heating up and how much power does it draw? Thanks Dave

    Hi Dave I enjoy your car talks and the scenery from your travels. One suggestion; maybe get a shorter usb cable with a right angle C plug. It takes up less space and the cable will take-up less space in the glove-box. Maybe cable tie the drive so there is less chance of the connections vibrating loose over time. The USB stick is light and firmly in place .Just a thought,if they have already broken into in your car wouldn't a screw driver pry the glove-box open? (locks are for honest people sadly..)

  • @JohnD213

    Battery drain on sentry cam is material, maybe 1 to 3% of battery capacity per day. Between that and cabin overheat protection, you should be careful about parking your Tesla for over a week without doing the math on what to expect when you return. If charging is not available, you might want to consider turning them off. If you leave them on, check your app every 4 or 5 days to check your current State of Charge. At some point you might want to turn one or both of these features off.

    • @caseykittel
      @caseykittel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was seeing around4 or 5% per day with just sentry mode on (while cold out). in my car that's like almost 15 miles. my car says 297 miles when charged to 100%. with the sentry mode, over head protection and app off it still uses at least 1-2% per day. I wonder if there's a way to turn off. use the safety screen and turn off? do I have to turn off wifi and not use the tesla app? telsa app seems to wake up the vehicle...

    I just went through this installation and the T5 drive would not format. I discovered that as long as any device is plugged into the USB-C plugs in the center console, the SSD drive in the glove box will not format. I have a lot of WAV and FLAC files on USB devices and a "hub" plugged into the console for housing those devices. I removed all that and the Samsung T5 formatted. The USB devices are now reinstalled with no conflicts.

However --- Support has told me they could not see my system operation or some of the reports I sent them from my FSD Beta Reports because the LARGE SSD (500GB) was too big and I needed to install a smaller on .. well all i had smaller was a 32 GB drive that was not big enough (64 GB ) minimum .... What I did to get it back working again .. was to Re-Format the 500 GB drive and now I think thing are working fine... It was about 460 GB ... It should work but Tech tried to tell me that it was causing problems... Not sure that was accurate..?? I guess if you start having problems -- RE-Format..!!!

      @electricant1367 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is one area where a larger drive could slow down the infotainment; if you have many files (music or otherwise) on it and set audio source to usb. At this point car will scan the device and all folders for music files. One reason I don’t get a 500GB ssd filled with all my music and opt for a few smaller sized devices….less files…sooner I can see the music in the gui and get to listening. Yea, for my favorite tunes, I don’t like Bluetooth compression or lower quality streamed music 🤣.

      That’s accurate, I usually upgrade to the T5 or T7 SSD for more robust recording

    It is not entirely true that upgrading to a larger storage device alllows you to store more teslacam video automatically. User intervention is required every 55 minutes. Sounds weird, read on. After reading thIs comment, I suspect many of you will want to read about how to partition a single device to so it can handle teslacam and usb based music as the extra storage pace will be better served for music data. A benefit of usb music is no extra Bluetooth compression.
    Ok To make use of the extra disk space to store video, you need to manually select the dashcam record button every 55 minutes so the video data is transferred from the recents folder to the saved clips folder. No matter what, teslacam only stores 10 minutes of sentry events. Here is how teslacam works. This is in the user manual.
    The TeslaCam folder contains three sub-folders:
    Recent Clips: When recording, Dashcam continuously saves footage to Recent Clips in 60-minute cycles. Footage is overwritten every hour unless you manually save it. Four videos are recorded for each clip, one from each camera (front, rear, left, and right).
    Saved Clips: Contains all recordings that are saved using Dashcam.
    Sentry Clips: Contains the last 10 minutes of footage from all Sentry Mode events that triggered an Alert or Alarm state. If storage space on the USB flash drive becomes limited, the oldest Sentry Clips are deleted to provide space for new ones. Once deleted, you cannot retrieve them.
    When the USB flash drive runs out of storage space, video footage can no longer be saved. To prevent the flash drive from getting full, regularly move saved videos to another device and delete them from the flash drive.

      The Tesla automatically overwrites the oldest files when it gets close to full. You do not have to intervene due to space usage.

      @@davidw4806 That’s not what the manual says. What’s your source of info? I quoted the manual btw.

      You are not talking about using the drive in automatic mode. It is true that if you somehow save enough files to fill the drive up you have to reformat or delete files. Not sure how many people would save that many files. Cannot think of a reason. You need to manually save Dashcam files and I do not keep my Sentry files more than a month. It is a real pain to scroll through them.

      I also notice you seem to be talking about storing music in the same drive. That is really not recommended as it certainly does fill the drive fast. Use a separate usb for music if you are bringing music files on a usb flash. Most, but not all, people use a single flash drive for sentry and Dashcam footage and do not mingle other files on it. You can of course do so but it will fill the drive much faster. Probably explains why I have never had to intervene with a error message.

      Due to the way the teslacam system works, there is no benefit in a teslacam specific storage device larger than 128GB unless a person manually saves tesla dashcam clips a lot like every hour for a few months. The quality of the tesla cameras is low (so is resolution & file sizes) so anyone recording that much (manually) will opt for a real dash cam system that is much better quality. In 100% automatic operation, a 128GB device will not fill up.
      But people are free to spend their money as they see fit.

    How did you manage to take 15 minutes to plug in a USB? Especially without covering the only important thing which is the power draw and size of the drive. Most 500gb drives are fine but the equivalent 1gb and 2gb drives can draw more current than the Tesla's USB port can provide. CRUCIAL information. Also remember the phantom drain when parked for long periods will increase. So basically this video is not very useful for 15 minutes lo.

    I don’t think Tesla give you a ‘high quality SSD’, that is just a Samsung thumb drive.😂😂😂
