      There's this chap based in UK (his channel name is hobnut i think) he's does focus quite a bit on old classic cars even buses as well as EV's. Yes, the good old classics (whether they be old cars, trucks or buses) do deserve more coverage i'll say.

      Yeah, these old cars still have a lot of life left in them, it breaks my heart when I see them abandoned and 'rusting in peace'. This old gal nearly met that same fate too...

      I thing I dislike about those "old classic" reviewers is that they always review the top of the line, best you can buy, but not the one that common buyer actually bought model. Like 500SEL , M5 , but this, a 300SE, is something we saw and something people actually own instead of a unicorn.

    Beautiful car my friend. Sadly not too many old Mercedes are left. I recently bought a 97 w140 s600. I’m slowly rebuilding it to an AMG tribute car. I did all the work to it and slowly bringing it back to its glory. I found most of the original AMG parts for it. There is nothing more satisfying than doing the work on your own car. Because you built it the way you want it. Looking forward to future videos.

      Wow!! The S600 is awe-inspiring to say the least, heartiest congratulations on your acquisition and current epic rebuild!! Exactly right about that indescribable feeling of restoring and driving something that u saved from the brink of death, it's how I felt all through the journey from KL to Phuket, Thailand with this W126, grinning all the way like a kid in a toy store. How do u put a price on that? Thanks for watching and all the very best with your S600 AMG project!!🙏🏽😊

      Chris Wee. Thanks my friend. I am fond with old Mercedes. I had owned a 1992 w124 400e, w202 C43 AMG, and w140 S500 Grand Edition. Now I have the s600 and it’s a blast driving it. Yes it has a V12. It’s not fast but it’s a cruiser. It’s all about the drive.

      @@1koolkat76 Nice collection!! As for me, in the past in addition to four previous w126 300SE as I mentioned in the video, I've acquired and restored a W115 and a S123 wagon, as well as the oldest car I've ever owned in my life, a 1968 W108 280S. All of them were incredible cars to restore and drive. The S123 remains the only car I truly regret selling, I should have kept that one 😊

    I love this video and everything you had to tell about the car and your history with it :)
    I did my apprenticeship on MB's, specifically W123's, W124's, W126's, W140's and W210's. I now own a W212 estate, and I love it to bits. It is still a proper Merc. And drives and feels like the old ones. Which is a good thing in my eyes. :)
    In terms of fuel economy, my W212 E300 (Hybrid) is pretty much like yours. Shocking in town, but gets much better on the highway. Engine idling at around 120-130kmh.

    When I got married in 1995, my in laws gave me a Mercedes Benz 280 SEL to use as it was totally underutilized & ignored. It was a 1982 model & it only covered 5600 km since new. It became my daily drive. Drove it for 3 years or so before my in laws sold it to a relative (who was in desperate need of a car; crashed his). Furthest I drove the car was to PD post wedding. Managed 160km/h before abruptly slowing down as I realized the tires were old 😊

    Ahhh these square Mercedes brings back great memories for me. My dad had a W124 back in KL when I was growing up. I still remember the distinctive engine fan sound as he pulled up the driveway. As the car was a grey import from the UK, it had a sunroof that was still working when he had to sell it off about 8 years ago (it was 18 years old at that time).
    Anyways keep up the good work mate; most motoring journalist only talk about new cars but old cars deserve our love too!

      Nice!! Well done and congrats to you dad, he has excellent taste!! Curiously the 280SE has a DOHC engine, while the bigger 300SE is SOHC. That always perplexed me. But yes, the 280SE has very smooth acceleration, but just be gentle on the pedal, cos it can be quite thirsty 😉

    Can you do a walkaround video, talk about more trivia stuff about the car, bits and pieces that are significant to the car. LIke the hidden wipers, when you are sitting inside the car you can't see the wipers, invisible heater lines, first aid kit and so on....
    I drove my father's no replacement for displacement 380SE on Plus Highway doing 160km/h accidentally, as it was so quiet and comfortable, the engine wasn't even at 3000 RPM, the only noise it had was coming from the passenger side mirror as the mirror housing couldn't fit back into the rubber gourmets. One thing that amazes me to this day is its turning radius, how the wheels "tip toe" when you turn it to one side. Wonderful car.

    • @ChrisWeevilGarage
      @ChrisWeevilGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One of them more amazing things about the car, the way it almost dislodges its "arms" during a full lock turn. Thanks for the request on a walk around vid, sure can, but later ya, in the meantime, I actually did a walk around during the video on new tint regulations, the longer one 😊

    Excellent job Chris! I always appreciate seeing old cars still with their original stereo units. My dad still has his W126 300se exactly like yours. (Cept he changed his stereo to a Bluetooth Gizmo which is okay but a bit flashy in my opinion in contrast with the more classy styling but oh well). I used to own W123 . It was orange colour . Very beautiful, however sadly I realise it was a lemon as they were rust in all the crucial areas (Mercedes hides rust very well) it was mechanically excellent and it was the prestigious black engine variant hahahahaha. But yeh had to let it go. Looking for another classic to be back in the game🙇🙇😏

    I drive my 1975 450 SEL not quite every day, but often. When we went to buy it, we drove 580 miles out of state to Cincinnati, Ohio. I looked it over, and test drove it and bought it. The next day I drove home. The car sailed along the highway with power and prowess. It was a pleasant trip. I’m slowly restoring the car myself.
    Everything works on the car except the sunroof motor. I took the roof apart, cleaned and lubricated the tracks and shoes. So I can open it manually. The motor needs to be replaced.
    I’ve taken my instrument cluster out to solder a jumper wire in the piezoelectric dimmer switch for the dash lights. The dash lights went out because of the dimmer. Since I had the cluster out I took it apart and cleaned it up. It looks great now and the lights work. Not bad for 44 years old.

    One thing I remembered about this car is how smooth the transmission changes gear. It's like before changing gears (up) it will engage a clutch for 1or2 second. Then only the next gear is engaged. Try flooring the accelerator and you'll get what I mean.

    I share the same feeling & sentiment as you do Chris... Old is gold. Call me stubborn if they want, but while my contemporaries kept up with times by owning latest cars (and keeping the banks happy), I decided, rather late to pull the handbrake but thankfully so, better late than never 😅, by keeping our family's Celica. Admittedly it's a continuous headache for me to source the spare parts but it has never failed me as my daily despite sometimes limping due to the scarcity of spare parts of wear & tear but thankfully it brings me home every time 🤲 🏆
    I'm also looking to acquire either an old school W126 300SE or a W124 260E when the opportunity presents itself as an alternative daily for me 🤲... Despite so many naysayers among my contemporaries whom advise me against such thought due to potential maintenence headache, your videos of the W124 & W126 assured me that there's still hope in my believe 🤲 🥇
    Thank you kindly Chris and fellow viewers for all the honest & also realistic insights... An owner's perspective never fails to silence speculations from others whom opine merely from hearsay 👍
    Cheers! 🥂

    Hey Chris great video as always, I watched this video at least 3-4 times and it never gets old. Lol. It’s good to see oldies being restored and given a 2nd life on the road. I’m considering to get a w126 or w124 in the near future. Just wanted to know from your experience, how much do u need on average to set aside for the initial maintenance(all fluid changes) and spare parts to get it running on a daily basis without having any breakdowns? Aesthetics aside as this can be done gradually.
    Keep up the great work!

    • @ChrisWeevilGarage
      @ChrisWeevilGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks man!! Thanks for watching and the comment, much appreciated bro. Well in terms of cost it all depends on what u "need" to do and "want" to do. I've found that u can get these cars running well for just a couple of grand, that's the "need" part, but then the costs can spiral once the "wants" come in, it's a different matter. For example, I've spent at least 10k all in getting this W126 to this level, over a few years, and recently another 5k for a full engine overhaul/rebuild, so be wary of that!! I would reckon though that if u have 5k to spend above and beyond the purchase price of the car, you'll be happy with the results. All the best!!🙏🏽👍🏾😀

      Totally agreed! Yes u can, in fact this W126s original number was 89, which the previous owner kept. He transferred that number to a new vehicle, and I went and got a new number for the car, 2868. The cheapest way to keep a number is to buy a kapchai and use the reg number for it, you can't however, just go buy a new number, the old number on the car has to go onto another vehicle. Old existing number to new vehicle is allowed, but old to old cannot, one vehicle in the number transfer must be new 😊

I drove this 23 year old car to work every day, putting on about 65000 miles over the next five years! It cost me only $16000 USD back then, but today in America a restored example can go for as much as $200,000. If these old Mercedes had not increased so much in value I think that I would still be driving them today.

      Thanks for your kind words. In addition to the 220SE I also drove on a daily basis a 1967 300SE coupe [dark blue with saddle hides] with stick shift which I purchased in 1975 for $4,150 USD. This was my first car! Later on, I drove to school in a 1967 250SE sunroof coupe. Finally, I bought a 1968 250SE convertible in 2000 just for weekend fun. My best friend was a Mercedes specialist and he made sure that all these cars ran well. Then I made a big mistake and bought a six-year old 2003 SL500. The first really nice looking car since 1971 in my opinion. But it was a nightmare to maintain! All those beautiful old Mercedes of the 50's and 60's were now collector cars with astronomical price tags so I have had to switch brands and now drive a wonderfully reliable Lexus ES 350.

      The first Mercedes that I considered buying after finishing college was the 190 SL. I always have liked the rounded-body look. I can recall speaking to a guy in the early 1970's who was selling his nice SL for only $2,500. I guess that I did not buy the car because I had not saved up enough money at that time. In recent years, I saw a restored strawberry-colored one in the Boca Raton Mall with an asking price around $200,000!! But, I did get to do a partial cosmetic restoration on a 1956 SL that my friend left at my mechanic's shop. The most fun was discovering that the nasty looking chrome on his car could look like new again with the application of fine steel wool. I learned this trick from a Rolls Royce dealer. By the way, there are about ONE HUNDRED pieces of chrome on all those 1960's Mercedes that I owned. The prettiest SL that I ever saw and never forgot was painted in pale yellow with a dark blue hardtop and bright red leather. So many memories...

Love them to bits especially the emotions that come from owning it and yes, over the years, putting them back together, even if it’s just installing a refurbished Becker radio, is fulfilling. I would just like to seek your advice on getting a W126. I came across one in black. It’s a 1988 300SE going for about RM12.5k. It’ll be the first time I’ll be getting one with a M103 3 litre engine. Just would like to seek your experience on ownership in the past. Are parts easily available and are they much more difficult or expensive to repair as compared to the smaller displacement Mercs? More importantly, do they generally fare well in Malaysian conditions? Sorry for commenting on an old video. Hope to meet up with you someday. Take care and stay safe. To answer your question, yes it's relatively easy to maintain a W126 Mercedes, I'm onto my 5th one now and I've never had any real issues, except for late last year when this old gal overheated when the clutch fan jammed and I had to overhaul the engine. An electric fan has since been fitted and she's running really well again. They're built to last but preventive maintenance is key when it comes to these cars. Periodic maintenance is a must. All the best with your acquisition!!👍🏾🙏🏽😊

I always wanted a split tailgate SUV similar to a Range Rover Classic. Found a really affordable one. But I guess her previous owner didn't love her that much so she punched my gut and ran away with my wallet. Had to let her go after costing me a small fortune on maintenance and parts replacement.
      But watching your videos beckoned me to give it another shot. This time, it was the W124 230E and she was a dream. The rest is as they say, an ongoing history. Haha.

      Chris Wee thank you. I love your car! My dad owned a W116 back in the 90s. Glad you are reviewing old cars. 👍

      @@antibullshit594 Thanks!! Yeah, back in the day this was one of THE cars to own, and it cost as much as 2 terrace houses, no really. Just glad I'm still able to enjoy this old gal after 36yrs 😊

      Please please do another video showing the exterior and some of the other detail shots!
      As an owner of current W205 , I'm like deeply in love with these beautiful Mercedes vintage cars as well,
      would definitely love to see more videos of this car, or even some of the maintenance routine of this beauty also!

    Excellent video as always. Would appreciate if you could let us know how we may contact Alex, the W126 expert. If it's ok. Thanks Chris.

      Wear and tear, it gets to all older cars, plus our climate is a real killer for those parts...

    Chris Wee, where do you normally go to get your w126 bodywork done?

    • @ChrisWeevilGarage
      @ChrisWeevilGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was done by Ah Kei in Ara Damansara, been going to him for quite some time. He's not a classic car restorer, just a regular car paint shop :)
