    It's so incredible that this works without needing to put the names of the stars. I could defiantly find a few stars whose name I know, but the fact that it's just any three bright stars is unreal to me

    It's hard to believe that Celestron still sells a telescope which requires that you enter the date and time every time you use it. It reminds me of an old IBM PC from 1982.

      You don’t - the GPS in your scope will automatically give you coordinates and time, which you need to confirm. That’s it.
      Just a note: if instead of the hand control you use your computer, then you need to enter the site informations the first time. Pretty easy.
      Well this is at least the case with my CPC.

What he is saying is a computerized telescope around $500USD that can triangulate it's own position and find almost anything in the sky at the click of a button is impressive, which it is, very impressive. The fact that it also works without issues consistently is insanely impressive. And the fact that Celestron put a threading on the back of the scope for a camera so you can view and do astrophotography without changing the eyepiece is also very impressive.

    I have found that you need to make sure your scope stand is level before doing the Sky Align. I use the provide round level tool to make sure the level bubble is in the center of the red circle. You can adjust the leg extensions to get it level. One time saving trick I came up, is to level the stand on a flat level surface. Then with a magic marker I drawl a line on the extension leg against the black plastic adjustment housing of each of the three legs. That way, when I set up on a surface like a sidewalk or parking lot that is level I just extend the legs to the mark I made. Helps me to save a few minutes when setting up.

    I've been trying to do sky align using the celestron phone app, and it's been much more difficult than this. I seem to have to select the star that I'm trying to align to, but with this you don't. It's it best to just scrap aligning with the app, and just do this, or are you not supposed to select the star on the app the way it sends to be telling me to? I've unfortunately been struggling with alignment (brand new to the hobby) and it's been somewhat detracting from the enjoyment of it.

    "Up" and "Right", last. ... Left and right are reversed, by default, at slow speed I believe. So, for the sake of clarity; which direction should the front of the scope physically move as it makes its final movements towards the alignment stars?

      Ive never been able to figure this out.

    • @mesenteria
      @mesenteria 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is in reference to the internal gearing of the drive mechanism since the procedure being mentioned is to control 'gear lash'. So, it's in reference to the optical tube that is being moved to align with the object of interest...meaning you simply use the buttons on the paddle as they appear and press the up and right arrow buttons last.

    • @shadowwind18
      @shadowwind18 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mesenteria unless I'm misreading your reply, it sounds like you have the same difficulty tbh. Since (only) when the scope is moving in slow speed - as it most likely is when making final positioning adjustments - hitting the "right" arrow, moves the front of the OTA to the left. At other speeds it does not have this reversal. And since the directions do not acknowledge that reversal at slow speed, and iirc the speed is not specified, it is left to Assumption, as to whether the effect is accounted for, and what we should actually do.

    • @JubeProductions

      the reason there is a city database is so that people can select the closest city from a list of known locations in the database. Some people might not know their coordinates or how to obtain them, but most of them would know the closest city from a list.

    • @robj144
      @robj144 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I believe that knowing your location, time, and date, by entering 1 star, slewing to the second and third star, by the relative movement to get to each star, it know where those three stars are compared to one another. It then compares to a database and figures out what three stars they are based on their relative positions and then can find all the stars and objects. It doesn't matter what stars they are because no matter what stars you pick, there is only combination of three stars at those relative positions anywhere in the sky.

      Hi there
      Having been using sky align for years, I did have occasionally a couple of alignment issues. Here the non-exhaustive list. Some are damned stupid, but all happened to me.... Maybe this can help?
      1. Locking knob not tight
      2. Wrong site or time information (make sure the indication on the hand control is correct incl summer time)
      3. Too close to a house = poor GPS signal
      4. Using Alt instead of Eq alignment (depending if you have mounted an EQ or the Alt table on the tripod)
      5. Telescope not balanced (eg. by using a guiding scope on it)
      6. Power cable of the telescope too stretched (I had this bug a couple of time after the scope had turned on his axis. Seems like it hates having the power cord « pulling » and bugs)
      7. Taking too long for alignment
      8. Using stars right above in the sky if you use an Alt mount. Better to select stars at say between 30 and 70 degrees angle from horizon
      And surely others that I wouldn’t remember.
      Also: I am now always using 2 stars align which I much prefer compared to standard sky align. Just need to know the brightest stars in the sky, but who wouldn’t? And many apps available anyway.
      Clear nights!

    • @pierrerossouw3635
      @pierrerossouw3635 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The place does not have to be exact, it can be several miles away and still use the same position ID.
      But if you move the scope/tripod, even slightly, then it is likely to be not in exactly the same alignment for the celestial objects. Confirm the scope is still level (with the bubble level) and then you may get away with re-alignment (of just one star or object). I suggest do a fresh alignment, a one-star alignment is probably all you will need to do.

      You have to focus the view for your eye and for the eyepiece that is in place. If you have the star diagonal in place, and the largest mm eyepiece, the 25, installed in the top tube of the diagonal, you must use the focus knob to the right of the diagonal to focus whatever might be in view. This means turning the knob one way many times, or the other way, clockwise or anticlockwise, until you begin to see a brightening object. Slow down, keep going, and soon something will pop into cleaner focus.

    Trouble with celestron nexstar SE8. I just did the 2 star auto align and it worked. I selected Mizar and Vega. Then when I double checked both alignments all good. Then I selected jupitor and it was off. Then selected the my original stars and was on point. Then I selected jupitor again and it was still off, so I sync jupitor, then went back to my 2 stars I choose and they were off. I followed pollywogs post but no luck. Any help would be great.

      You have to 'tell' your telescope where it is. For example you live in Indiana, but now you wish to use the scope while on vacation in Florida.

    i always use 3 star alignment , but it only works with an 18mm eyepiece , not 25mm probably as the 18mm is more accurate

      That's simply not true, it works with a 25mm eyepiece just fine, but is just more accurate with an 18mm.

    • @azuredragon1978

      It has to do with backlash in the drive gears. If you move the scope in one direction, then move it back in the other, you will notice there is a moment where the gears have started turning, but the scope is not moving. That deadzone is backlash. By always approaching the star from the same direction, you factor out the backlash. The gears are always engaged and the scope is always moving when it thinks it is.

    I recently bought the 127slt but having issues with the finder scope. I can see the stars with my naked eye but when I try to find on finder scope its either very faint or can't see at all. Any suggestions?

    • @strangerous1313
      @strangerous1313 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The finder does not enhance or enlarge anything. So anything you can't see with the naked eye, you will not see through your finder either.
