  • LMDh will be coming to race tracks next year in IMSA and WEC, but what is LMDh? I discuss LMDh vs LMH and show you the main differences between the classes.
Apologies for the errors that I have only just noticed upon uploading. I have tried to be as accurate as possible.

    Couple of additions.
    1. One of the main differences between the two classes is the hybrid system. LMDh will use a spec gearbox, battery and electric powertrain with an output of 50kW, whereas LMH manufacturers are free to use their own designs, with up to 200kW provided by the electric motors. Total output, of course, has to remain the same.
    2. LMH based on production chassis had been the original idea. However, this idea was scrapped somewhere along the way. I think this is one of the reasons why the projected Toyota GR road-going hypercar got nowhere.
    2. As of now, BMW has no plans to enter Le Mans. They mainly want to cater to the US market by entering IMSA only. Of course, this could change in the future, but there won't be a BMW team at Le Mans in 2023. History kind of repeats itself here - back in the mid-80s, BMW produced a GTP prototype, but did not bother to develop a Group C equivalent. This was a BMW of North America project by the way, not one governed by Munich itself.
I'm reeeeaally curious how this BoP is going to play out. I mean, why bother to put all that money and effort into LMH if you can achieve more or less the same with much cheaper LMDhs? There's gonna be a shit ton of political handwringing behind the scenes, way more than even today. But still, with all these contenders for overall victory, I'm very much looking forward to next year's edition of the 24h at Le Mans.

Answer to the "Why LMH" mostly seems to be because it was first. There seems to be a lot more interest in LMDh simply because it's relatively affordable. I doubt we ever see customer LMH cars because of the cost, but we'll almost certainly see multiple customer LMDh customer cars.

@@robertpuhr2379 We might see 1-2 customer Porsche's next year, on top of a few factory efforts each in WEC/IMSA. I think the main issue right now is supply, not the will to get customer cars out there.
In 2024 I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more Porsche customers, on top of a few Lambo customers, as Lambo doesn't do factory teams in general.

Sorry to tell you, but there is loads of false information.
      1) Vanwall is everything but certain to race, legal rights issues with their name…
      2) (1:07) Audi canceled their LMDh project, it is not official, but everyone knows it!
      3) LMH & LMDh aren‘t classes! They are technical regulations. They will race in the Hypercar class in WEC & GTP class in IMSA
      4) (4:28 in the video) Completely and utterly false! LMH cars will be allowed to race in IMSA‘s GTP class. This news has been out for over a year, and the hoax that LMH cars are not allowed is still spreading smh…
      5) No, LMDh does not mean Le Mans Daytona hybrid, it means Le Mans Daytona h. They have never decided on the meaning of the h because they couldn’t agree on it. ACO wanted Hypercar, IMSA wanted hybrid, so they just called it h. Look it up in the official technical regulations!
      6) 671 bhp, not hp. The hp value is 680! Or just use the correct unit: kW (500 kW) To be fair you mentioned it in the video, but the table you created says hp…
      7) there isn’t a budget cap. It was just an orientation of what a car is supposed to cost. The Porsche 963 is understood to cost 2.9 mio € though… (however that includes everything!)
      8) LMH also has to stick to the 4:1 ratio, otherwise BoP would become a nightmare.
      9) LMH 4WD hybrids don’t have their hybrid (4WD) activation point at 75 mph/120kph. The threshold is part of the BoP and it currently sits at 190 kph for Toyota & 150 kph for Peugeot!
      10) Alpine will not race in 2023, their old LMP1 car won’t be permitted next year anymore!
      11) Please: don’t pronounce the S in the Le Mans, please🙏🏼. It’s. Not. Spoken.
Although that seems like a lot of criticism I appreciate you trying to inform about the future of sportscar racing, because it looks to be amazing. But please be more accurate with your information!

Unpopular opinion, but I'd like to see Toyota come out on top from this competition. They've faced derisive comments that they've only won because they're the last manufacturer standing these past five years. That's true, but it's not their fault Audi and Porsche withdrew. With Porsche, Cadillac, Peugeot and others returning, I want them to prove they are good enough to beat them all. As it is, it must be frustrating to have their hybrid capabilities nerfed by BoP so Glickenhaus and Alpine can compete (raising the speed when hybrid can be deployed, thereby defeating the primary advantage of developing electric power). I don't want to see an arms race because this category needs to be sustainable to encourage manufacturers to stay long term.

Unfortunately Audi's plans are on hold as they are looking into a factory F1 team and potentially replacing Aston Martin. Meanwhile Aston Martin are reportedly back in talks of resuming their Valkyrie LMH program. Isotta Fraschini is also said to be looking into an LMH program. While Acura does want to run Le Mans in 2023, WEC requires that at least one car run the full season and compete in at least 1 race prior to Le Mans for that car to be eligible. Acura doesn't want to run the full WEC season though so as it stands, they more than likely won't be at Le Mans next year with the same for BMW. Glickenhaus in 2021 circumvented it because they paid for the full season and competed at Monza prior to Le Mans. Peugeot wanted to run Le Mans this year, but they wanted to get the homologation right and weren't able to make Spa. ByKolles Vanwall were supposed to run this season, but due to licensing issues with the Vanwall name that they didn't own, they were rejected for 2022. If they get that fixed, they'll be eligible for 2023.
So all in all, as it stands for Le Mans in 2023 we'll have Toyota, Porsche, Ferrari, Peugeot, Cadillac, Glickenhaus, and Vanwall pending the licensing issues. Peugeot, Porsche, Cadillac, and Glickenhaus are open to customer teams as well. Believe currently we'll see two Toyotas, three Porsches, two Ferraris, two Peugeots, three(?) Cadillacs, two Glickenhaus's, and one(?) Vanwall for a total of 15 set for Le Mans next year with Acura and BMW up in the air. For 2024, you can add Lamborghini and Alpine as well. So for Le Mans 2024, we're looking at 20+ cars in the Hypercar class depending on the number of customer teams. 2024 will also see GTE completely phased out (GTE will be AM only in 2023) and replaced with GT3 Am. And in 2025, we'll see the next generation of LMP2 cars roll out.
