I enjoyed this story about George L. I didn't know he was an all-American boy, played football, joined the Airforce, was a teacher, a comedian, and an actor. Now I know. I always enjoyed the show as a kid. Ron Howard and I share the same age. We're both seventy. God bless them all.
Now Francis didn’t care for the youngest main character Ron Howard, what would be a reason(s) for her not to care or like Opie? Seriously!!! If I’m not mistaken I heard/read somewhere that Francis and Andy butted heads on many occasions while working together. She was surely unhinged especially in her end. Happy she at least apologized to Andy and Ron for her actions and the way she treated them but she really should have made the same effort to apologize to her treatment towards George bc that was just unacceptable.
One irony is that while Frances Bavier openly disliked Mr. Lindsey culminating in that assault, she actually took it upon herself to guide and teach basic blocking, reactions, etc. to the performer who'd played his cousin Gomer Jim Nabors who had a nightclub performer and singer but had never attempted any kind of stage or television work before Andy Griffith had cast him in his goofy role. Not surprisingly, the Alabama-born Mr. Nabors initially felt over his head but longtime theater performer Miss Bavier took him under her wing to teach him the nitty gritty of acting which enabled him to get through not just his one year as a 'TAGS' regular but five seasons headlining 'Gomer Pyle: USMC' show. She could have easily snubbed Mr. Nabors and derided him for his inexperience but, in great contrast to how she'd treat his replacement performer, she went out of her way to help him! I think the likely reason she refused to see Mr. Griffith or Mr. Howard when they attempted to visit her was that she had taken in a large number of feral cats into her North Carolina home and had become somewhat of a shut in by the time of their attempted visit. Yes, she was nowhere close to being the neat-as-a-pin housekeeper that Aunt Bee had been. It also should be noted that the performer Polly Holliday who played the sassy server Flo on 'Alice' was born in Jasper in 1937 but I'm not sure how well they knew each other before each left there to become performers. Thanks for this!

I feel that even though she may have been hard to work with, she nevertheless felt she was a professional actor and tried to do the best she could - and the rowdy, fun loving, nonchalant behavior of some of her coworkers rubbed her the wrong way. Still, I love the character she played, and I feel sad for her, as she evidently was a rather lonely and depressed person in her later years. Yes, every person has problems and she had her share. It's the human condition. But the great majority of the people commenting here have never met her and have no real idea what was in her heart or what motivated her actions. it sounds like she did suffer from some mental issues in her last years. Sad that so many people here are glad to hatefully rake her over the coals when they don't know all about her problems. If known,, The real Aunt Bee would disturb & not sit well with fans,, But over the years it would have the same effect on her,, Becoming a reclusive,, mentally disturbed,, hoarding cat lady living in (what was described as) filthy,, disgusting & dangerous living conditions.. Many might not realize that with people like Francis was,, They also know what/who they are & it bothers them as well,, Although they might not show it & Her phone call/apology all those years later to Andy is proof of that..But many times what happens with people like that,, They know what/who they really are,, It disturbs them,, They want to change it,, Some will repeatedly try over the years,, But continue to be unsuccessful at it & finally coming to the realization that,, Like it or not,, It's just who they are no matter how hard or many times they try to change it..Just as Francis must have done & eventually figuring out that the only way she could keep from treating others badly,, Was to not be around others,, Becoming a recluse because of it,, But unfortunately for her,, It wouldn't stop her from treating herself badly & that taking it's toll.

Unless you're defending yourself from an assault.
It's called self defense then, not assault.
@mattfn I said "defending yourself". She said there's never any excuse for someone to assault another person. An assault is physical harm to another person. My point was there is reason or excuse to physically harm someone, it's when you're defending yourself from the person causing you harm.

I actually met George Lindsay at a Mayberry reunion. I'm a huge fanvof the show
I wrote to Frances Bavier and got nice long handwritten letters back from her, very newsy and kind. I later had them authenticated and sold them online. Maybe from a distance she was kinder.
She probably had class and they didn't. Look at what she had to work with. Andy was having an affair everyone knew about, George was telling off color jokes, etc.

He graduated college with a Bachelors of Science degree.
I absolutely could not stand the Helen Crump character, either.

They should’ve fired her!!!!!!!!!!
George had no reason to feel embarrassed or ashamed, It wasn't his fault. she was the one to feel ashamed of herself.,
One irony is that while Frances Bavier openly disliked Mr.
Kiss my grits😉

My wife and I knew George and his wife briefly, while their son George Jr. was enrolled at the same school (TCU) with us, studying acting. They were kind, friendly, and humble people. Although I can't say I knew them well enough to be sure, from what I knew of them, I seriously doubt that George Sr. "utterly hated" anyone. That takes a certain kind of person, and I don't believe George was that kind. I get it though ... you need to make extreme statements in your title to attract viewers. It's called CLICKBAIT. As a TH-cam content creator myself, I understand the motivation. But personally, I try to avoid it. I do try to write titles that will intrigue potential viewers, but I try not to lie. If you want to see how I do it, or judge for yourself whether I have been successful at it, my channel has the same name as my user name. I use my acting training to read poetry so as to make it come alive in a way I don't think reading it silently to yourself can ever do. Check it out.

Wow, so many hateful comments here about Frances Bavier!
At least I'm glad that she called Andy before her death and apologized for being hard to work with.
In the early days of star trek next generation Patrick Stewart didn't like the way the other crew played around during takes etc but later on became one of the most fun abd lived pulling pranks

Why was there a picture of Ernest Borgnine in the middle of this?
How 'bout the purported picture of Aunt Bea was actually a picture of Lizzo!
Andy and Don Knotts tried to visit her and she wouldn't open the door. She passed away a year later. She was a cold person.
The show would have been just as good without her.
Aunt Bea could be my ex mother in law's twin 😂
Why is a photo of Ernest Borgnine just randomly tossed in at the 6:12 mark?
Because he was in McKales Navy
So in other words, she was an old shrew …
I understand she had a drinking problem as well. She was difficult no doubt but the ratings loved her. I loved Goober he had a beautiful innocence about him.
As I understand it, she didn’t get along with anyone on that show
I once read that she didn't like playing the older woman because she was as young as her co-stars but looked much older than them. She probably didn't want to be perceived as an old person.
I don't blame George! I would be PO if she had done that to me.
You have to look at the picture as a whole. She was one of a few women versus men on the show, she was quite a bit older and had been working in the business longer than they. She probably looked at herself as more professional than these "kids" she worked with which kinda set her attitude toward the rest as far as joking around or colorful language. All that being said, no right to hit him with an umbrells....it would have made me mad as well.....but I kind of see where she is coming from and considered hard to work with. Everywhere I have ever worked, there is always that "one hard to work with person" ...even if you work in a shoe factory.
