How To Make A Spiced Sorrel Drink From The Caribbean.

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 3 พ.ย. 2011
- How to make Sorrel as it's made in the Caribbean using a traditional recipe from Trinidad and Tobago. This spiced sorrel drink is popular around the Christmas season in the Caribbean, since that's when the sorrel flower blooms and is available for use. However I'm using dried sorrel in this recipe for the drink.
@Scoop763 Note that my videos are for a wide audience who may not know everything about Caribbean cuisine, thus the "talk too much" explanations. See that little X on the top right of your page, feel free to use it rather that complain. I love to talk and make to apologies for it.
caribbeanpot - 🤣🤣 you should become a "Storyteller"!... you'd be very very good at it! Have you ever seriously considered becoming a "Storyteller"?... you would be a star overnight... instant success (raking in load$ of money$)!!!
caribbeanpot Talk all you want so long as you continue to deliver exquisite cuisine from your kitchen!
we love ur talking bruh thats why were here
100% we're here for the explanations, that's how we get better, because after a video we understand what we need to do.
@caibbeanpot you didn’t show how you strained the sorrel! You talked lot though. Thanks!
I just made this for my West African husband today, though they call it Zobo. But I put fresh pineapple in with the sorrel and much more ginger. Then after it was strained I added drink crystals instead of sugar.....so yummy.
One of my favorite recipe from Caribbeanpot (Thanks Caribbeanpot). I am from Barbados and I love finding recipes that remind me of home. I am making this right now to be had with my Easter dinner. I added bay leaf to mine. I also let it steep overnight so that all the different ingredients get to blend together.
I first drank Sorrel when I visited Guyana, South America (2006) for a wedding. It was one of the most unique and refreshing drinks I'd ever had. Thanks for sharing this recipe so that I could enjoy the flowers I'd purchased recently.
I'm from trini and my dad still grows sorrel, pigeon peas and corn lols
I made this yesterday. It is so good! Told some friends, and they suggested adding orange peel.
Thank you....Clear and understandable explanation....feels like we’re right there making it with you!! Mom/Grandma who usually made it is gone on to heaven--Will be using you recipe to make some for the family..Thanks!!
This sorrel is boss, especially when u add the dried orange peels, this is a must try. the recipe is excellent. thanks Chris!

Today is Memorial Day 2020. I have been watching this video for months and finally decided that today would be the day. I am so glad that I did because, Brother, this is better than lemonade! Now I don't have to buy bottles of this from my Jamaican store. Thank you for teaching us.
Awesome I made my first batch after seeing this video. I love it. I always got mine at Christmas from my son's mother in law. Now I can make some for others throughout the year smiles
i am from Trinidad.. grow my own sorrel, and always love to make me a nice jug of sorrel drink.. always great, especially around this time of the year.. =)
Got 3 Gallons of Sorrel i made sitting in my refrigerator. Sorrel after you make it can be really strong like its concentrated, so you may have to dilute it if its too strong to your liking. The strained leaves and ginger and such you can reuse with a little bit of water, not as much as the first time to reboil and get extra Sorrel juice from the leaves and then discard. But you get a bit more out the leaves than just discarding them the first time around.
I'm from Ghana, and I do lots of this drinks at home.its very nice
had a bag in my house forever, never knew it was this easy!
thank you so much i really needed this.I am Puerto Rican and my fiance is jamaican however my next door neighbor gave me a drink that i couldnt stop drinking and from there i have tried everythin and nothing seems to work for me. i came accross your video thank you soooo much is soooo good!!!! i will drinking this all year round!!!! thank you and God bless!!!!!
Thank you, you're my go to Man for the Caribbean dishes. I discovered that my son in Colorado Springs, follows you on you-tube too.
Today I've made my first Sorrel drink thanks to you. The instructions are easy. It tastes delicious.
In Panama we drink "saril" (sah-reel) all the time but mostly in December -alone or adding some ginger-. It's really delicious and healthy. Nice channel, love to see that we share a lot of flavours my friend! :)
I live in the uk and have grown a massive amount of the stuff that no-one else wants!! It doesn't have a great reputation here. Thanks for this.
You have always been my go to Guy! Everything comes out so good each time. Excited to make this right now.
I love sorrel and make it all year round from the plants I grow here and freeze in the Caribbean. Have also experimented with making a cake with it.
Thank you. Sorrel is one of my favorite drinks
You are a well spoken cook. Like the fact you are easy to understand. I can learn easily and try the recipe quickly. Another thumbs up

GREAT! GREAT!.
Chris I always watch your vids but never leave a comment but what you do with the sugar in the warm water is brilliant. I do that , I call it my way. Am glad that there's someone else with a brilliant idea without feeling like a fool. When I go outside the box people tend to look at me strange, wondering where I come from 👍👍👍👍👍
Just made some with Stevia and added a Bay leaf as someone recommended! Delicious! Tha s for your video!
I love sorrel any time of the year...thanks for sharing your recipe!
ay, Chris. This is the best drink i ever tasted. My friend is from Jamaica and he made some for me with the yellow sorrelflower, . then he was at home in jamaica and brought some red sorrel for me . Dried. Perfect drink for summerdayz
Thanks ! I made this today :) going to leave it over night ! hopefully my man loves it :)
One of my favorite drinks!
Moved to the EU so I've been missing home flavors. Haven't found sorrel to drink outside of artificial flavors in store bought iced teas. Finally found a store that sold the dried flowers so I'm gonna make a bunch to get into the winter season mood!
Thank you showing us how to make this awesome drink
I got 4 bags today. I will be making mine this weekend! TFS
Thanks for this recipe. I have a pack of sorrel but just couldn’t fin a good recipe
I will make this drink today.
Thanks Chris
got a bag of dried sorrel wasn't sure what I had so thanks for the video I'll be making me some sorrel drink some time!
I tried this recipe and totally enjoyed it....will make more for Christmas... thanks 👍
Love this drink!!
I was drinking sorrel for many years. I just bought fresh dried sorrel from Angel Brand in my local area. After watching this video I will become a pro...
Try honey or agave instead of sugar. The best sorrel I've ever tried was at the NYC West Indian Labor Day parade and he sweetened it with honey instead of sugar. You could taste the flavor of everything he put in it w/o it being too sweet.
Next time you go to J’ouvert, grab some Bake
The honey was delicious!
Those boys talking are from St. Croix USVI... one of them is parted bless his soul. It was very entertaining. When we make it at home we sing this tune
Yrxva 🙏🏽 Jose!
thanks for sharing ur idea, have never thought of adding cinamon sounds like a good idea will give a trial soon
Thanks Chris I'm trying this in a few days.
I made it 2 days ago with dried sorrel.......man.....all I can say is thank you so much Chris it tastes fabulous with your recipe. Last year I put too much ginger and it was so bitter now I know just a lil bit.....perfect !!!! Love your channel and btw the Caribbean black cake....mmm ......boss man!!
Ginger kills the sorrel. Use it without ginger and everything will be fine
@@gavinscott10 what??? What kind of ginger are you using?
@Curliloxx If it's bitter it ain' de ginger! Could be too much clove or someting else you added!
@@remiem-iw7uk I use ZERO ginger in my sorrel. It taste just fine without it.
I cone back to this recipe every year! God bless you Chris 😁👊🏼
Love this drink
I making a batch now. I use some allspice I had sitting around since I ain't have any cinnamon sticks. Thanks for the recipe. Big up!
Your videos are so straightforward and enjoyable. Thank you for such informative videos.
my mom love to make sorrel drink for Christmas time
Thank you very much for this recipe :-) this is by far the best and simplest to understand recipe of this drink I have been able to find. I have been looking for a recipe.
We also made ice cubes with it for on hot days. Delicious 😋 ❤
Now tuning in because i'm going to reap from my garden to make juice...
I'm so glad to see tour video! I tasted that drink in a restaurant and really liked it. I thought it really tasted like ginger and tye flower I know as hibiscus, but that sorrel was another thing ahah. Now I know, thank you! Also, Sorel is the name of a town near where I leave which helped me remember the drink name
Will attempt to make this drink for Christmas this year. Found the fresh sorrel in the grocery store today. Pray church! Lol
In Ghana we call this sobolo.
@Asante Akan - thanx for that useful info. Most of the plants/fruits/vegetables in Jamaica & other West Indian countries originated in Africa & came over on those "slave ships" from Africa.
Funny in Naija we call it Sobo
Asante Akan
Always good to hear the names of different foodstuff. In the Caribbean its called sorrel.
How do you use the sobolo in other dishes?
thank you my bahamian dad was wondering how this was made because it tasted so sweet!
Going to try this sorrel recipe for Christmas.
Last year I made sorrel wine, it was awesome 👌🏽
I make this once a year.. okay maybe twice. So I always have to hear what Chris says about these Trini dishes so thank you Chris!! ❤
Just a couple notes: Here in Vancouver I could only manage to find sorrel (They call it Flor De Jamaica Hibiscus flower) from Mexico. Hope it works.
They did suggest you wash it before using so I soaked and rinsed a couple times and there was a lot of dust. Hmm
Love the suggestion Chris, to just add a bit of spice so it’s not overwhelming the flavour, 9 cups of water (that solved the mystery of how much water to use) and two cups of sugar. 👍
Sharing tonight at New Year’s party with my non Trini friends. Will see how they like it. Cheers!! 🎉🎉🎉
30 years ago we used to Live in EGYPT! THEY call this karkhadhy' boiled and with sugar. But your this Recipe IS Exalant. I Hope I am able to find them in SPAIN😊thank you.🌻🌻👍🎉🎀🎈merry Christmasto you 20 20🎉
I like to thank my Tanty Brenda, for making me aware of your site. Growing up I was more of a pot timer than a cook so I missed out on this knoeledge. I live in the uk and will be sending this link to friends and family keep up the good work great idea
thanks for this. love this drink. they have it in Asia too and call it kurkede if I'm not mistaken.
I love this drink
It's lovely without sugar too. I add boiled pineapple with the peal (juice )which serves as a natural sweetener.
Excellent video! You are helping me make my first Sorrel drink. I will let you know how it does.
Sweet Blessings...
I am pleased you are using the dry ones
omg! I used to work with a lot of caribbean ladies and they would bring sorrel at every party we had! Love! love! it. I found a recipe on line but it's great to have the visuals to go along with it. Now I just have to find the sorrel plant. Thanks for sharing!
Wagwan bredren!? Haven't made sorrel in quite awhile. Just made a pitch of mauby for my son and myself. Lovin the recipe!
"Put it in da fridge for a week or so...," you craaazy! You can't sip it - you gotta drink it! It's like nothing else... nothing else! That's not gonna last a week, bro! No sir!

Im enjoying everyone of the recipies
Thanks, Chris, I’m making mine now!
Thanks 👍 I'm trying it now
I was looking for a recipe without rum thanks
I have some jamacian sorrel seeds in my fridge right now. Going and plant them tomorrow so by November we drinking endless sorrel.
Great recipe Chris but with mine I add dry orange peel port wine and rum squeeze of lime
thanks buddy bin always wanting to know how to make it👍
My mom make good sorrels and she don't. Use. White sugar. She use brown. Sugar
Fuck white sugar
I prefer white sugar for sorrel because it doesnt interefere with the colour of the drink. Brown sugar is great for something like bread, pone, conkies where you can appreciate the flavour better. But of course we each do what works best for us.
Is it okay to use honey instead?
Thank you for your recipe
OMG I JUST STARED WATCHING U LOVE THANK YOU IVE BEEN STUCK ON UR VIDEOS FOR AN HOUR NOW LOL WILL TRY ALOT OF THESE RECIPES❤
Yes, it's sometimes called hibiscus flowers. I guess they are from the same plant family as what is normally known as hibiscus. In Europe (especially Germany), sorrel is known as hibiscus and it's sold as a tea.
It is Hibiscus. It is drunk hot as tea in Egypt and called Hibiscus.
Instead of 1 cup of white sugar can u add half cup brown sugar or some honey?
thank you for this recipe! :)
Nice drink it is up my friend love it.
Thank you for this recipe/video!
