I believe lots of smiths would have stopped tweaking the piece long before you did, but that's a difference between just banging something out and actually being an artist blacksmith, IMHO. Nice!
That's a lot of work, but the results are different worth it. Great video Roy.

This was an interesting one Roy. When you started on the leaf, I have to admit I was slightly underwhelmed. Using the blank, I thought, was kinda cheating, with most of the work already done. What I hadn't realised though, was how much detail you would manage to give the piece. The finished leaf looks absolutely nothing like the blank and is far more impressive than I had expected. 👍👌
Sorry if that sounded critical; it's not meant to, just shows my lack of knowledge. The black arts of forging and smithing are still largely a mystery to me, part of the reason I watch the channel. I'd love to see a load of these leaves incorporated into a gate or some fencing.👍😁

I appreciate you for taking the time to actually watch the video to see the final result 😊 unfortunately most people believe blanks are cheating but they have actually been in use for 500 yrs... They are just one facet of traditional Ironwork that most modern day blacksmiths ignore as exactly that traditional.. Thank you for the great dialogue :-)
@@ChristCenteredIronworks Yep, saving time has been around for a long, long time Roy.😁 The thing is: back in the day, blacksmiths around the world would have been churning out ornamental(and functional) ironwork in far greater numbers than are used today. They would have needed every possible trick/cheat to try and keep up with demand.
I suppose there must be some "modern" methods applied to forging but most of what guys like yourself are doing was invented, then adapted, then perfected, long before our time. If a blacksmith thinks of something today, there's a pretty good chance that another smith had that very same thought many, many years ago. Blanks probably fall very neatly into that category.😁

Oh, and I loved the tiny tongs holding the tools. Small tools - easy to make, store, adapt. Brilliant idea! This I really have to make for my forge. Would you recommend water or oil quenching tool steel for that?
