    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Brock has Onix, Bruno has two Onix in RBYFRLG which evolve into two Steelix in his rematch battle in FRLG, Jasmine has Steelix, Roxanne gets an Onix in her rematch fight in Pokémon Emerald which evolves into Steelix later, Roark has Onix, Byron has Steelix, and finally, Flint for some reason has a Steelix in Diamond and Pearl.

Whether it was Onix squeezing the life out of Pikachu or Steelix rampaging through Bidoofs’ dam, the Rock Snakes were menacing and cool looking at the same time. • @inventiveusername5191
      @inventiveusername5191 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Bruno's gen1 teams are remarkably terrible. Two of a mon which is weak even in the early game, a special attacker with 35 spc and no STAB, a Machamp with a horrible selection of moves and a Hitmonlee which could theoretically hit quite hard but is usually too fragile to achieve anything.
You could tidy up the Machamp and give him a Poliwrath and perhaps a Golem since no-one else has one, but he'd probably still suck just because the fighting type is so bad in gen1.
Perhaps they should've limited fighting to the dojo and had a normal E4 member instead?

  • @cheryl9809

Onix really got screwed over by being the first boss battle
It had to be big and scary to show new players that gym battles are a real challenge
But it also had to be weak to not deter people from playing more due to the difficulty

  • @NoLegRadish

I've seen some people use sheer force life orb *Special attack* Steelix, it's hilariously somehow working.
Its Flash cannon is about the same damage as a maxed Spa Magnezone unboosted Flash cannon, so about the same as 130 base Spa poke using a 80 power STAB move, which is not even bad.
People were using it to counter Mega-Mawile because its high physical bulk, it can also 2HKO something like salmance.
Overall it's niche but surely a fun thing to see when Steelix pumps up a Earth power to Incineroar or Toxapex.

Clash Content the thing with marowak is it is one of the most powerful attackers..... Until you take away thick club via knock off trick ect. It has the boast of highest potential attack stat you just need to skill swap it huge power and give it thick club and its attack breaks a thousand at max. It can do decent in doubles with lightning rod with earthquake if you pair it with something like gyrados that heavily benifits from lightning rod or togekiss who can support with follow me and have it do that absurd earthquake. Though in singles it is better to have she'll armor and bonemarang to protect from crits and break subs. It was weak on the special defense and speed but had decent defense. So put it up against physical Pokemon. And make sure you don't let the opponent use knock off or trick against it because that just turns its attack from absurd to mediocre. It relies on thick club.

-Head Smash, since Onix gets Rock Head as one of its abilities.
-Body Press, which operates off the user’s defense stat. And Onix has quite the base defense.
-Dragon Dance, especially given Onix’s superior speed compared to Steelix.

Not very good, sadly. Bleh stats, meh typing (dragon is always good but ground opens up too many weaknesses), decent abilities, good movepool, but overall weak defensively, mediocre offensively and didn't have notable gimmicks to work with (besides sand veil/brightpowder on sand teams but even that was meh). Its strength was in its versatility but without any bulk/offense to back it up, flygon was just disappointing. Doubly so because of its amazing design.

    • @umbreon-wn2to

Something funny about Steelix, my older brother tried to convince me it was the strongest Pokemon ever. I don't know why he did, maybe he also thought it was for some reason, like there could have been an episode where a monstrous Steelix goes on an unstoppable rampage. He essentially hyped Steelix up as if it was a legendary Pokemon.
