MGL means it has a “Magnum Lite Spool”. Means it has Shimano’s lightweight spools in it, allows for easier and longer casting since the spool weighs so little. HG means it’s a “high gear” ratio reel.

Those are very nice reels average size and weight. The other 2 favorites from Shimano are the Aldebaran & Metanium. The Antares is to big & heavy for my liking, but very expensive @ $699 MSRP I believe...
The high end gear helps with sensitivity and feeling the bites and basically comfort... But I've caught many a bass on an Abu Garcia black max and Berkley Cherrywood rod
It also has brakes under the side of the reel that the roller dial is on, you have to pop the side plate off to access them. Lighter lures set one brake on and the rest off...mid to heavier set two on and the rest off then use to external dial to make your adjustments.
I was in BPS today I live 3 miles away from the store got some mushroom meds weedless and some roadrunner's and a BP's quad leaf shad spinner bin 3/8 ounce and it's bad weather for a while here raining and windy in West Central Florida.
@@michaelcurle3133 I prefer the non dc version personally. But I don't like the curado dc either. I guess I got used to not having it my whole life and just don't feel i need it. Plus if I'm brutally honest the sound is so annoying to me, I know some people love it but to me it's just a gimmicky thing. I have 4 standard slx reels and I feel like I throw them farther, flip with them better and like the feel of them better.
@@michaelcurle3133 if youre using the reel like youre supposed to with the spool tension set to fall about half the speed it should the dc casts fine enough to get the job done. But I set me reels by backing to knob off til the spool has side to side play them tighten it just enough to get the play out and turning 2 brakes on. If I do the dc that waybit does tend to fuzz up and stop short of where the standard slx cast distance.
The old currado baitcasters are my bread and butter. I got two of them from a store that went out of business. They still go on eBay for over 200$ almost 10 years later

Shimano makes a reel bait caster for 650.00. Since Shimano bought G Loomis now they make a rod for 650.00 also check out Daiwa Steez rod and reels all above 575.00.
I have one of the cheaper Shimano Casitas reels...I have it on a 6'3" medium 13 Fishing Muse...I can sing the heck out of a 1/4oz beetle spin haha! Shimano just makes phenomenal casting reels!

AFAIK, on shimano HG stands for “High Gear” and will get you more fishing line in one turn of a reel. Magnumlite (MGL) Spool design, significantly reduces the moment of inertia, allowing anglers to experience greater casting distance and accuracy with a wider variety of lures. those are what I found with a quick search on Google.
Shimano has 4 models up from that yet. The Chronarchs are very good reels The MGL means that model has the lightweight Magnumlite Spool. Should be awesome to cast

I bought my first Shimano a week ago and got the Corrado K. let me tell you something that real is super smooth and doesn't really break the bank at around 170. Another good reel for roughly the same amount of money would be the SLX DC which it's the lowest price point reel Shimano offers with their DC technology. So if anyone's looking for that reel that sounds like a supercharger when you toss it the SLX DC would be the way to go or you can step up to the Corrado DC for around 250.
I have an idea that I think would be really fun. You should go to academy and get like a little ice fishing rod and then get a giant deep diving crank bait or some big lure. It could be like a small rod big lure challenge. Great video!
I've got expensive reels but use my Tsurinoya XF50 the most. Think that's the model number... the first one that came out... the red and black one. Got iti loaded with Flurocarbon and I'm using it on 1/4 oz plugs and worms.
I bought that reel as a Christmas present to myself this year. I haven’t had a chance to use it yet. Been super busy. Can’t wait to get out and catch some fish with it. I buy a little bit of everything when it comes to fishing line, my favorite mono is P-Line . And my favorite floro is seaguar invisx 100% 28.99 at department stores and 34.99 at the pro shop for a small roll
With a new baitcasting reel, bearings need to break in. They have light grease or oil packed in the bearings that have set for months after they’ve been made. They need to be broken in to get the lubrication spread around. It will thin out, and make less resistance. after a few outings, it will be an entirely different reel. I’ve experienced this with Revos and Curados.
I had that exact reel, just a few years older. It was good to me, fished really well, cast great. I’m a Shimano guy so I’m a little biased. It’s a great reel, I can’t exactly say it’s worth $300 to me personally, I have Shimano reels in the $100-$200 range that fish about the same, but I personally think all of Shimanos products are great quality so I think outside of the DC reels you’ll see minimal differences

In the same price range I'll have to disagree... Obviously the Chronarch is different... Lew's doesn't even have a reel in that price point, but a buddy of mine have a 200 Lew's and I'd pit it against my curado K any day... I'm not saying it's better, I prefer the Curado... But the difference ain't that drastic... Matter of fact that Lew's is another than my K...I just like the look and feel of the Curado better. And my Pro Ti is the smoothest reel I've felt at least when comparing them in store... But dollar for dollar I think they're both awesome...
I'm not disagreeing that Shimano is frikkin awesome, my main point is that in their newer stuff, Lew's has really stepped it up and it's putting out some seriously good quality reels right now...I love both brands and will probably fish with both brands for the foreseeable future

Go to the store and feel both of them and choose for yourself. I personally prefer my shimano slx over my speed spool. Just make sure you know how the breaking system works on the reel considering most shimanos are centrifugal braking, its more complicated than magnetic, although i dont know if youve used centrifugal breaking reels before or not. I persomally feel like lewsare made for beginner and intermediate fisherman while shimano is for intermediate and up, although they are all good reels
Jaythus I have an slx dc. I ended up getting a deal on the pro ti yesterday and I’m happy with my purchase. Casted it in my pond after I got home and spooled it and so far the reel is super smooth and I like the fit in my hand. Knobs are sorta bigger than I’m used to but no big deal. Going to use it for bed fishing here soon in Mississippi!

My favorite reel so far. Also...if you didn't realize..there is a switch like button on the bottom left side. It opens up and you have 4 switches inside for your brakes. You can turn them off and on individually. I keep 2 on and 2 off
Lojo you are only adjusting the "fine tune" part of the brakes. If you pop the side plate off there is 4 brake shoes you can pop on or off to gain further casting distance. If you are all the way down to 1 on the outside I would take one brake off on the inside and put the dial on 3-4

I just bought a Lews Mach Crush SLP Speed Spool Baitcaster Combo(Dick's Exlusive Orange & Black with Black Grips) for $180 on sale ($200 reg). Definitely the most expensive setup ive ever owned and ive been fishing for 20+ yrs. After only using it a few times I can say so far its been absolutely worth it. It's a sexy color but more importantly it's just all around quality. I dont know if you need to spend $300+ but for $200 its a great setup. I've been fishing with cheaper gear for a long time and still have caught many fish. However, I wanted something that would last longer down the road and sometime the cheaper stuff just dosent hold up. I'm hoping spending a little extra money will be worth it. I think I'm going to get the exact same spinning combo next.
Hey LoJo, not sure if you've seen the internet ads for "Fishing Care Package"? They supposedly have brand stuff like Quantum, Abu Garcia, all sorts of hard and soft plastics that are supposed to be over pours of major plastic that we normally buy. Maybe try some packages including buying a combo for $59 and see if the stuff is the quality they claim. Then try a challenge to catch fish with stuff you bought from them. They have all sorts of packages that could give you quite a few shows.

MGL is the magnesium spool. 150 is spool size (151 would be the left handed version) and HG is high gear ratio (7:1)
If you got an XG it would be an 8:1 gear ratio
And that reel does not have digital breaks

Try the Ambassadeur Revo Toro Beast 60/61. $350 but the best purchase you could do. Specified for bigger fish tho.

Lojo you are only adjusting the "fine tune" part of the brakes. If you pop the side plate off there is 4 brake shoes you can pop on or off to gain further casting distance. If you are all the way down to 1 on the outside I would take one brake off on the inside and put the dial on 3-4

Earlier in the vid it’s very light later in the vid on 2nd cast it’s a little heavy in my hand( one of the lightest baitcasters on the market if not the lightest)
I have 3 of them and find myself using the Chronarchs more than my Metanium MGLs. Easily the best mid priced reel on the market.

I just bought a Lews Mach Crush SLP Speed Spool Baitcaster Combo(Dick's Exlusive Orange & Black with Black Grips) for $180 on sale ($200 reg). Definitely the most expensive setup ive ever owned and ive been fishing for 20+ yrs. After only using it a few times I can say so far its been absolutely worth it. It's a sexy color but more importantly it's just all around quality. I dont know if you need to spend $300+ but for $200 its a great setup. I've been fishing with cheaper gear for a long time and still have caught many fish. However, I wanted something that would last longer down the road and sometime the cheaper stuff just dosent hold up. I'm hoping spending a little extra money will be worth it. I think I'm going to get the exact same spinning combo next.

Hey LoJo, not sure if you've seen the internet ads for "Fishing Care Package"? They supposedly have brand stuff like Quantum, Abu Garcia, all sorts of hard and soft plastics that are supposed to be over pours of major plastic that we normally buy. Maybe try some packages including buying a combo for $59 and see if the stuff is the quality they claim. Then try a challenge to catch fish with stuff you bought from them. They have all sorts of packages that could give you quite a few shows.

chronarch is the reel type 150 is the spool size and mgl means magnumlite and hg is the gear ration 7.2:1

Try the Metanium mgl or dc, I love mine. I have 2 met mgl, 1 met dc, curado k, curado DC, Scorpion mgl, and my new favorite the Aldeberan bfs.
