I am 74. I live in the suburbs, I do not grow anything except herbs, no chickens, no homesteading at all. I enjoy your You Tub channel. Your thoughts apply to all things in life. If your life does not work, change it. People are getting offended by everything now a days. I am sorry you have to keep defending yourself. People need to blame others for their problems. Keep up the good work. Stay safe.

Hun, people that leave comments like that must have too much time on their hands, meaning they don’t work a farm! You are wonderful, you take your time to teach, advice, and often make us laugh. A farm is hard work, it’s a never ending job, I was raised on 86 acres, I know…I remember many days that we got up before the crack of dawn to get things ready for Dad to be able to complete something before he went to work at Ford 2nd shift. We kids worked our behinds off, mom god love her, I don’t how she did it. 9 kids, a farm, and laundry for neighbors who were elderly. People who have never been there just don’t know. Love ya keep it up you are strong and amazing

I absolutely love you authenticity. I don’t have a homestead but I am learning to garden. This will be my second year. I am so tired of the Karen’s getting offended…I don’t care. If you don’t like it shut up and move on. Really their negative opinion means nothing and they look like fools. Keep up the great work Patera you amaze me

Morning, I agree with you on the deep bedding. I'm currently in CT, doesn't work here. Moving to south west Virginia in the next few months. So many yt channels are getting way to Hollywood for my liking. I like you, because you keep it real. Good, bad, and ugly. Thank you

Hi Patara from Quebec, I laughed to hear you mention Quebec,. We are definately not in the same climate, its minus 35deg. C here. we have to run heaters in our chicken barns for our poor hens. I do use deep method here, it keeps them warmer when its very cold, but as soon as spring hits, I can tell you they get cleaned out quick. Keep going girl I love your videos. God Bless

I am so thankful for the homesteaders who are willing to share… I take the info I learn from you all and use what I think will work for me and just tuck away the rest. It is kinda like buying a book there may be a bunch of useful information and there may not but we don’t write the author and damn him/her! Thank you Patara for all you share… I am grateful for your mentor ship

Oh my word, as a fellow Tennessean, yes.yes! No hay/straw in the coop, I use only a pine flake bedding or I have a heavy nasty and disgusting mess, that will mat down into a downright difficult to remove mess.
As someone who has kept chickens for 25 years, and tried "all the things", this is what works best for me in the Upper Cumberland area of Tennessee.

I always say here we learn as we grow. We always learn new tips and tricks. Here in South Mississippi on our homestead the deep bedding method doesn’t work at all either. I’ve tried the deep bedding it just a bunch of muddy chicken poo. Love your knowledge and mentorship/advice in your videos. Thanks for always sharing. Much Love from our little homestead to yours.

I’m in Texas and I have typically around a dozen birds. Deep litter isn’t great for me either. I’ve found the best option for us is hemp bedding - may not be the cheapest, but it is incredibly absorbent and cuts odor like nothing else. I put it in my compost about 4 times a year and it breaks down really quickly to be used in my garden.

I live in north east Tennessee and i use pine shavings in my chicken coop. it helps so much to soak up the moisture of the poop and rain. I use a tarp over the outside cage for my girls.. I see you use the "new math" method to count your chickens too....lol. That deep bedding method didn't work for me either....what a mess it ended up being. But I saw the method, tried the method, rejected the METHOD (not content provider), and moved on. Unless they are the ones mucking out the stall, they have no say so in which bedding fills the wheelbarrow. Y'all are providing important info. THANK YOU🙏

I had lots of trouble with moisture in my chicken coop. I found the answer to my problem. Air flow is the key. Even in subfreezing temps. If you take away moisture the chickens can stay warmer. The next trick i throw grain in litter. The chickens scratch and fluff the straw or litter. Litter goes to the bottom and straw to the top. No more frost bite ever.

I'm in Vermont, I use shavings for deep bedding. At least I can shovel it out when the time comes, the hay doesn't work because it becomes a mat. A mat that is so tangled, that it is near impossible to break a chunk loose.

I have learned so much from TH-cam channels such as yours! The honest ones! When you make a mistake, you don’t edit it out. That’s says a lot about your character! Please keep doing you! The thing is, most of what you do, works for me….. however there are things you do that I KNOW would not work for me and I just don’t do it. How hard is that? Lol! You do you! And I’ll keep watching and learning. Love ya! Blessing to you and yours. ❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏

I agree. The deep bed method is just a bacteria infested pile of crap. I'm in Ontario, Canada. Winters include all sorts of random weather until like mid Jan. Then it's cold until mayish. I tried the deep bed 2 years ago and my birds got sick. I won't do it again. It's a lot more work, but worth it when those hens are happy and healthy.

One thing you cannot control is the WEATHER! I live in southwest VA and have the same fluctuations in weather that creates all kinds of situations, including yucky mud with the animals. We have to figure out what works best for OUR environment. I love how you keep things real and don't "sugar coat" life on your homestead. We learn as we go, and this is a continuous process.

In our area, I use SAND! Keeps my coop dry and clean. Easy to clean poop out too.
Right now the ducks and turkey coop has INCHES of poop! All I can do right now is dump hay on it to keep it cleaner for them. The poop is FROZEN. UGH!

I live in NJ and tried deep bedding when I had 5 chickens. It worked as intended but when I got more chickens, the amount of poop was overwhelming! So I don’t do deep bedding anymore and just scoop out the poop every morning. I like that I can throw it in my garden in the Fall and Winter for the Spring and Summer growing seasons. So even though it may work in my area, it depends on what’s going on in my coop at the time and what my homestead goals are. Anyone who doesn’t understand that probably has little to no experience homesteading.

Thanks for you honesty, Patara! I love your sense of humor LOL! Deep bedding is no good, don't like it! We live in central TX. I insulated the inside of our hen house (15'x20'), it has 3 automatic door openers. We have dirt and mostly rock in the hen yard 75' x 75'. Last Feb when it froze here for a week, I shoveled a foot of snow out of the way for them to get to their grandpa feeders and they were great. Do what works :0). blessings

I use pine shavings in my coop. I also live in Washington state where it rains non stop 9 months outta the year. I have to change the bedding monthly. Sometimes it gets changed at 2 weeks, depending on the mud in the yard. This year we started putting hay in the yard. Helps a little. I don't do muddy eggs. I either feed them to the dogs or toss em. 🤷

😆😆😆 Just finished doing the same this morning! Got to fill a small pool for the ducks a geese today from our pump house. No hoses for a week now. Bucket brigade from the house to the livestock. My coop is a disaster! Just had, so far..5 does kid in the last 2 days. 10 baby mini LaManchas. 3 does to go. Its so damp cold!! Gates froze in the mud. Couldn't get the goat gate open, luckily we went around to the field gate. Next wed. And thurs. Is deep freeze again!
Lots of my homes readers use the small rubber bowls. I use. The huge rubber ones to water the birds. I can smash the bowl on the ground and get the solid ice out and refill. Works slick.

I'm in east Texas and our weather changes constantly. I have only 10 acres and talked to the experts about raising goats to eat the 7 acres of woods. Well, we had February last year and I'm preparing for one just like it this year. Found out that goats hate rain, it was my first kidding time and I didn't have a shelter or enough weeds for them. So, instead of having my goats in a pasture or under the trees, they will be in a barn most of the time. No rain, no mud, less parasites, happier goats. I only have 7 does and a male (he will continue under the trees), but as you said, what works for other goat ranchers doesn't work for me.

I am in Virginia and was having the same type of issue. I was able to dramatically reduce the muck by putting in a concrete floor for my coop. The bedding no longer becomes a mucky mess as soon as it rains and I no longer have to worry about predators trying to tunnel into the coop. Also it make stripping the coop easier.

We live in NE Quebec. Today it's -30c Burr. 3 winters ago (our winter lasts7 to 8 months) we had 2 milk cows, 1 steer and our 40 chickens. We used the deep bedding method. BIG mistake. We are a small homestead. If you do not have a tractor or easy access to stalls and such DON"T DO IT! The bedding in the barn pens got 3 1/1 feet deep. It froze to a solid, mesh mess, hoof issues and created a perfect atmosphere for mites to eat alive our chickens. Your major enemies during winter is moisture and drafts. You should have seen how much my husband labored and struggled to clean out that barn that spring. Not to mention the time spent instead of advancing in the ready, set, go season. LOL just after I posted this you said ,"I don't live in Quebec.".

"You gotta do what works best for you", YES! That means, you may have to TRY & FAIL a dozen times before you find the method that works in your situation. Some people think that there is this fail-safe recipe for homesteading. Do A, B + C = $$$!!! Guess what? It AIN'T SO! There are NO FAILURES if you learn from it. It was just an expensive, back breaking, frustration but it was also a learning lesson. I've tried probably every method suggested on You Tube with turkeys, chickens & ducks. Anybody but me using dried peat moss?

I absolutely LOVED using crocks for my rabbits! I was in NE Ohio at the time of raising rabbits and it was about the only thing they didn't flip or chew up 🤣 I feel you on the harsh winters!

Yes ma'am. A crop might not make every season. So true. 💕

Yep, I'm in virginia and change coop bedding weekly. Then sometime add some fresh rosemary I grow in there ...

No apology needed. We gotta adapt to our surroundings. I live in a mid-sized city in the Pac. NW. I can only have 6 chickens but no limit on rabbits yet. It rains almost every day. Actually, it's more of a trickle. This is the weather my Germanic ancestors thrived in. So, will I, God willing. We also learn a lot when we fail.

I don't prefer deep bedding either. I also use straw and wood chips for ground cover, and change it out about 3 times a week, adding DE.
The wild birds bring in mites and keeping this as clean as possible is what works best for me at this location. I totally understand you!

I don't think it matters what a person does in life, garden, homestead, or live in a townhouse; we all would be wise to listen to you. There was a day that if someone did not like what you were saying, they would move on without flapping their lips. But as they say, this is a new day. OH, BY THE WAY, I LOVE YOUR BEANIE. God bless you, and may God continue to bless the United States of America 🇺🇸.

PS: I think it is funny that Blanch (French for white) is not white, and Betty White (Betty = Elizabeth = Oath of God) is always getting herself in trouble.

I have to say that snake is a art peace. 😆
I love your channel because you are real and your homesteading advice is awsome . Homesteading is diffrent from area to area. Like you said do what is best for your house and farm and family. Alot of people think it is a one size fits all. and as you and I know that is not the case. You and James do a great job in my opinion 👏 I couldn't do it I am to old and have back issues.I do prepping and canning and that is hard but I do it. So YOU GO GIRL I'M CHEERING YOU ON MY CHEROKEE SISTER..

Patara, you are authentic and the best! Love your videos! I'm 70 years old, living in a 175 yr old home, in Maine, that I have totally stripped back to the outside walls and slowly have been trying to put it back together by myself. I heat my home with a wood stove, although at times, wishing I had central heating. For the past two yrs have been cooking on a hot plate ((groan)), can't wait for my propane to be hooked up so I can cook on a 'real' stove! You are the real deal and love all that you share! Hoping this spring I can finally, have chickens here on my humble homestead! ((Hugs to you, Girlfriend))

It is amazing how much mud and dirt chickens bring into the coop, then all the manure. In and out of the building all the time but it is good stuff for the garden, I use a little shavings but it is still a mess no matter what. I only used straw once.

My daughter has chickens- around 12. Lost many to hawks through the years. Yes, I was guilty about criticizing as to why the coop looked the way it did. But, I learned. Not my coop-shut my mouth!
And I forgot to say- I love your videos! Very informative!

I am subscribed to several homesteading You Tubers. I appreciate all of their tips, tricks and suggestions. That being said, I use what I think will work here and file the rest away for possible use down the road. I wish I knew how to bottle common sense. There is a large market for it these days. Thanks for the video.

I like to hear peoples views on different animal care techniques, supplies, feed etc. I find it interesting. Sometimes I learn something new and find some thing that would really work for me. Sometimes stuff I've been doing for years I change my mind and do something different. You just have to evolve, and have lots of tools in your tool chest so that you can adapt to whatever situation pops up.

Deep bedding works for me at the moment. Our coop is difficult to clean out frozen shavings/straw right now but this spring we are adding a 4x8x8 addition to the coop so all the feed, tools and equipment will be in that side. The other side will be just the chickens with new perches and the nest boxes will be in the wall going into the addition so I can easily collect eggs and make it harder for them to poop in the boxes YEAH!!! I know how silly it must sound to be this excite about redesigning a chicken coop but it's going to make my life soooo much easier!! My husband is calling it the chicken taj mahal LOL. I wish I could do goats also but I work full time and wouldn't be able to give them the care they need and that would not be fair to them. I'm hoping n 6 yrs when I retire I will have a bunch of goats running about 😁. Keep up the great work Patara...YOU ROCK GIRL FRIEND!

I know this might sound like a weird comment for a channel like this that is about living on a farm and taking care of animals but, I saw a picture of biscuits that you had that were flopped over and they looked so good and I was wondering if you could give me the recipe??

It's so exhausting sometimes when people are offended so easily over so much. I just cant be bothered anymore with that. I just simply walk away and let them have their temper tantrum.
Girl, you gotta do you and what works for you. Ain't nobody else gonna do it for us. It's up to us!
    Love your channel!

I think I say this on every video of yours now...PLEASE don't ever change who you are! LOL Your sass, knowledge, and sharing good and bad is what keeps bringing me back to you. I always take info from ANYONE (even the people with their own movies, apps, and hundreds of thousands of viewers) and see if, or how I can tweak it, to see if it will work from me. We are on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and have temp swings a lot like you. Although this year, it seems like there's more snow/cold than normal. We are just starting over on a brand new homestead this season. We are only on 2 acres, but believe me, we will make it work for us. :-) Thanks again for sharing your life with us! ~ Stephanie

I get ideas, I learn things, I try things, I make changes. Its kinda like a basic recipe and I add my own ingredients to make it better for me and my house. I love that you are real. Maine is darn right cold and it takes the wind outta ya. I'm exhausted after taking care of the animals. All any of us can do is the best that we can do. Blessings to everyone 🥰
