Thank you so very much for uploading these classic eps, sinbad0p! The episodes from 1984 to 1987 represented Brookside's "Golden Era", I think. Gritty, controversial and unafraid to explore taboos (for the time) but levened with great humour and pretty firmly rooted in realism. Marvellous to be able to relive them! And, other than the cars, some of the fashions and the Corkhill's hideous 1970s decor in the lounge, it's barely dated.
    SPOILER ALERT!!...
I remember this tragic episode most clearly because, as a teenager in 1986, I was mesmerised by Heather Haversham, so Amanda Burton's departure was both a shock (in those days broadcasters didn't leak storylines in advance) and crushing blow... from which I don't think I've ever completely recovered!
There seems to be conflicting information from Amanda on why she chose to leave Brookie. On television chat shows during the 1990s she simply said that while she loved working on it, she wanted to try other things. However in a newspaper interview she gave shortly after leaving, she claimed that she didn't like the Nick storyline and felt that Heather wouldn't have settled down so soon after Tom and would have "played the field". Either way I suppose her character did rather end up in and endless loop of failed relationships!

I wish Heather had stayed another few months, so we could see her dealing with the situation, perhaps seeing Barbara and the kids too.

Heather was in the soap from 1982 and this episode was from 1986 I m sure most fans would agree that Amanda Burton was a major character in Brookside

@@Renwick19 She was just absolutely incredible with the Nick Black storyline which I've just watched. It's a shame her and Alan Rothwell didnt get any awards for this

I wasn’t born until 1986 so don’t really remember Brookside. I started watching it recently and I have to say it was and remains the most realistic soap in the UK. Not afraid to mention politics, first gay soap character, first ever lesbian kiss on UK TV. It was a ground breaking show that unfortunately lost its way by putting out ridiculous storylines to chase viewing figures (which is what ultimately killed it!)
I think if they remade this now and worked hard on the storylines it could be successful again. It couldn’t be any worse than Eastenders!

There was a time when I myself rated Brookside above Coronation street and Emmerdale which began its journey in 1972 ten years before Brookside

The fact that James Bulger was mentioned in the programme was a big plus as far as I was concerned It was a crime that shook Liverpool and the rest of the country and indeed the whole world so for somone to mention the little boy who we all know about was a good touch bringing reality to the real world

@@paulwhite1040 I think they meant that it was mentioned around the time on brookside not necessarily the specific episode. James Bulger was still 3 odd years from being born when this episode aired

Love Barry's 1980s sports top. Still got a couple of those in the back of the wardrobe! Never understood where the Corkhills got their horribly dated 1960s/1970s style kitchen wallpaper from though (don't think it's in this episode - thank heavens!). Must have been a discontinued line they got cheap! It was a bad move as Doreen was quickly established as trying to keep up with the Joneses. Mind you, their settee was 1980s. It just wasn't in the best possible taste! LOL! My dear old mum was a bad taste merchant and I can vouch for the authenticity - but even she'd moved on from that kitchen wallpaper!

After Heather left she rented Number 9 out to Johnathan Gordon-Davis and his wife Laura who sadly died. Johnathan left the close not long after and Heather sold Number 9 to Terry Sullivan and his new wife Sue in 1990
