  • Junk food and soda have long been known to be leading factors in causing obesity, diabetes, dental disease, and other health problems that plague Americans; yet they remain multi-billion dollar companies with a global reach. Dr. Marion Nestle, world-renowned for her research examining scientific and socioeconomic influences in food choice and the impact of the immense lobbying power in the food industry, outlines both the challenges and winning strategies (including taxes on sodas, removing sodas from schools and restricting marketing to children, excluding sodas from food stamps, and limiting the sizes of drinks sold) and calls for a greater investment by companies and communities in promoting sports and outdoor entertainment, healthy alternatives to sugary drinks, and more nutrition research.

It's a great presentation, and I appreciate Dr. Maron Nestle's point, but don't blame "big food" for people not being able to control what they put in their own mouths. Eventually, people have to take responsibility for being obese.
