Crossing The Worst Rated Border in South East Asia 🇱🇦🇰🇭

  • We crossed the border from Laos into Cambodia and had been warned about the scams that can take place at both immigration offices (by officials). Admittedly, we didn’t have the right cash but even if we did, they were asking for more and were charging everybody a minimum of $38 dollars which is significantly more than the price advertised online. We had to pay $5 for a departure card leaving Laos as we had no idea we had to keep hold of these. After paying this fee, we were waved through and still not given a departure card to fill out. We ended up paying $87 for 2 Cambodian visas when the cost should have been approximately $70.
Have you done this border crossing before? Let us know what you thought in the comments!

Yes we were caught out with not enough cash this time! We didn’t know there weren’t any ATMs near the border 😢

If they approached the border with no cash as they were apparently expecting ATM's, I think scams are the least of their worries. I'm surprised they remembered to take their passports with them.

You need to do a bit of research before crossing the border. Always take some dosh with you as you need to pay to enter Cambodia in dollars, kip or baht. It used to be $30 US or 1500 baht. They were not scammers and actually did you a favour as you had no money.

Thanks for watching our video and great advice! We know for the future we will always need cash but people who did have cash were sadly still charged $50 or more so were still having to pay extra even with cash!

Your alleged claims are false for the most part. Firstly, the cost of a Cambodian Visa is $30 but there is also a stamping fee; explains the $38. You were not scammed. There is an exit fee as well from Laos...you were not scammed. Secondly, who in their right mind travels around 3rd world countries without getting some cash from an ATM in the city. Common sense will tell you that ATMs are scarce especially outside the cities. Thirdly, you enter a 3rd world country from another 3rd world country and all you can say is it's a shit hole. Have you even been to a 3rd world country before this trip? What did you expect? If you want to see a shit hole, look in your toilet.
Some advice for you rookie 3rd world travelers. Get an E-visa whenever possible (it is for Cambodia). Keep a few passport size photos on you. Always keep at least a $100 and some local currency on you hidden somewhere for emergencies. Keep a positive attitude...don't be so negative.
I've traveled in many 3rd world countries and over 40 other countries. There are scams everywhere and it's best to do some research first so you know what to look out for. I loved my time in Cambodia and didn't let the scammers get to me. The best scam I came across was when I paid the taxi driver for my trip to the airport. I handed him a 100,000 note to cover the cost plus a nice tip. The driver put it in his shirt pocket and then got out to get the luggage. After getting the luggage out, he reached into his shirt pocket and 'pulled out the money I gave him', a 10,000 note. For a moment I was second guessing myself so I looked in my wallet because I knew exactly how much local currency I had remaining. He had switched out the 100,000 note I gave him with a 10,000 note. I grabbed the 10,000 note from him and told him that is not what I gave him and then I started waving for a police officer. The taxi driver quickly started pleading not to get the police officer. I said no problem but give me my change from the 100,000. The cab fare was around 80,000 so he gave me 20,000. I told him the 20,000 was going to be a tip but since he tried to scam me, no tip for you. What he didn't realize and I didn't either until buying some coffee in the airport, I also had his 10,000 note he had switched out. Basically, he got short changed on the fare.

First of all, thanks for watching our video and taking the time to comment, we really appreciate it. The immigration officers at the border were asking for various amounts of money from $38 upwards, they first asked us/ most of the tourists there for $50 dollars each. Which we actually refused (some sadly didn’t) so I think we and many others passing through that day were scammed or at least attempted to be scammed.
I actually visited Cambodia 10 years ago, I went through 2 land border crossings (Vietnam to Cambodia & Cambodia to Thailand) I experienced nothing like this. I think my comments about the area outside the border were mainly fuelled by frustration at how they were speaking to us and what they were attempting to do to us and many others around us (it in no way affected our view on Cambodia or the view I had on Cambodia 10 years ago) this is why I struggled to stay positive during a scam… I don’t know many people that would see an optimistic side of this. I don’t know if you’ve travelled in a “developing” country since covid but cash is no longer king here anymore, ATM and card machines are everywhere (if a street vendor in Laos has a card machine I’m sure an official immigration office can do so… but we know why they don’t want to)
Lastly, we enjoyed that story about the taxi scam very much and had a good laugh about it, I’m glad you ended up short changing them 😂
      Thanks for watching ✌🏼

@@TheBlagPackers Yes, I have traveled since COVID and ATMs are more abundant than before but still, they need an internet or phone connection to work and you know how that can be sometimes. It is always better to plan just in case.
You are correct...it seems more scammers are out there than ever before. The only place recently that no one tried to scam me was Vietnam. Over pricing? Yes, but not an all out scam.
