As a 6th generation Floridian and 5th generation Cowhunter, glad to hear Mr. Puckett knows his history...while we have a hybrid of the Spanish and English cattle raising traditions, we lean more to the English heritage and most of our horses aren't as well trained as y'all's...if you've seen the Vaquero Series video on Florida Cowhunters, I'm the poet featured in the video...

I have said it before but I could listen to Mr. Pat all day. Great sense of humor! My education is still ongoing but man it would have come a bunch faster if I could have been exposed to him at a young age. I have some dvd's that he appears in and was wondering if he would consider being a clinician or if he has been in the past? There is a lot of knowledge coming from Mr. Pat and it needs to be out there for the world. I do personally like this format the most. I find a break in the day and sit down to watch and listen when nothing else is going on. Feels like one on one this way. Oh, and in western Kentucky, 1 cow for every 3 acres if rotating and that is a year round operation. I probably just had half of your annual precipitation in the last few days. Thanks for your huge part Mrs. Deb.

Our SW Louisiana capacity is 1 cow/calf unit per acre. In the 50's Jeff Davis Parish boasted more momma cows per acre than any other parish or county in the US. Every acre was fenced. Cattle were rotated annually with rice. My dad and I were both president of our parish Cattlemen's association (yrs apart - I'm 72 now). The cow calf enterprise has given way to Crawfish production. We can raise 1,000 pounds of crawfish per acre (best years). Prices start at 4 dollars per pound in November (low supply though) to one dollar in June. We now rotate rice with crawfish. Instead of Quarter Horses our hands now ride airboats. We will farm 600 acres of rice and flood the rice stubble to raise 600 acres of crawfish (1,200 total acres). Love your tapes. Oh, we still run some black momma cows and still feed a few good horses. Really like your ways. I wish I had been smarter about starting my colts back then.

What an incredible video! This could not be more helpful considering where I am at the moment with my mare.
Since I started working with her I have learned so much, and boy have I made some down right dumb mistakes. One day she was a bit further out in the field than what I felt at the time like walking, so I took my 60ft rope, made a few coils and roped her. Mind you this was the first time she was EVER roped, and of course she took off. It was about 45 minutes before I could approach her again.
That was a long time ago, but I know for a fact that she will remember that betrayal forever. I swore to myself that I wouldn't do anything that reckless again.
That is why these videos are so helpful. Both of you are passing down all the wisdom you have earned over the years so reckless beginners like myself can have a shot at a true partnership one day with our four-legged friends. That and not hurting them, or ourselves...
I also loved that little bit of history!

Your channel has taught me so much! I didn’t come from a horse background but I married into it. 3 years later at 34 years old I decided I enjoyed riding enough that I want more out of it. I’ve started to take up roping and actually bought a horse for myself and am also working with teaching him the rope. He is 6 and was never roped before. This video and the roping video that explained how to split the loop are so full of good info! Thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge.
Oh, by the way! I’m from Indiana

Thanks again for the info, Pat. I have been following you since I came down with covid this time last year. I spent 10 straight days watching your videos and work with Chinaco. I put into practice everything you showed us with my OTTB, Lady. She's still not quite settled, still very hot blooded and quick to flight. I watched this video, hoping for the next steps but remembered everything else my horse needed to do before I could get on and rope and so we went back to the round pen and roping, as I did last year with her. You can never let your ideas get in the way of responding to what your horse needs in the moment. We aren't quite here yet.

You know you can do this with a yearling. I was with my horse since he was weened off his mum @ 4 mo. age. These young'ins are at their best in their learning stages. They rely more on your guidance than a fearful 3yr old never been handled. Heck, I shoot off of mine in saddle or just taking a lean off his rump, roping is a cinch. I relate to your methods and mind set. Great rewards when accomplished. Take the time.

I see so many so called trainers that don't seem to have the time or patience to do the job right. They're getting paid by some poor fool and still can't be bothered to do it right. It's so refreshing to see someone willing to put in the time to get the job right.
I ride English, so certain things on your channel don't apply to me (like preparing a horse to rope, lol) but good horsemanship is good horsemanship plain and simple; and most lessons do apply (or at least they should!) no matter what discipline you're in. Even in this roping video you talk about working on proper flexion while your desensitizing the horse. Breaking a horse Western and breaking English is basically the same process just with different tack. Self-carriage and collection are the same everywhere; no rider wants an unbalanced horse with a hollow back. Building trust with a horse is always important, as is not betraying that trust by setting them up for failure or treating them cruelly.

I love how Criollos got Google-translated to "free yo-yos" The S. East TX cattle economy depended on catching some of those at one time as well. had to be a pretty tough type of cowboy to chase those through the big thicket and bring enough back to make it worthwhile. Today there is still a need for these men and horses (and dogs) to catch a different type of free yo-yo and put them into jail.

Heck, tossing the rope over the horse is what i do when either halter breaking babies or if older, when I'm prepping the horse to go under saddle. I also pet everywhere with a lunge whip... under, over and between.
I also take a long lead rope and I'll use it around all 4 feet (one at a time), to pick up the feet and also i will start to lead the foot as well as the head, to walk around the arena.

Hi Pat, this is such a great video. I would love to rope my off track thoroughbred gelding, but the problem is that I don’t have a round pen or a small corral that I could turn him loose in to rope him in. I do have an arena I can use but it is rather large and he’s quite a sensitive horse so that doesn’t seem like a good idea. Is there any way I could do it all with him in the halter? I might have to go more slowly, but do you think this could work and how would I go about getting him used to the rope while wearing a halter? Thank you so much for your awesome videos.

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

For Pat, a 3/4 inch bosal should be used for about a month. He personally doesn’t use a 3/4 but rides in a halter for that first month to take care of the basics. Before you go to a 5/8, you need to be able to do a one rein stop and stop going straight, get started on a back up, and be able to walk a circle with the horse’s spine bent like a banana, and walk, trot, and lope outside. He spends the longest amount of time in the bosal riding a 5/8. Hope this helps. Good luck and thank you for watching!

"When I was young and ignorant..." Buck Brannaman talks about that too. In today's world of "instant gratification" everyone wants to know "Well, how long is this gonna take?" Computers and businesses use profit algorithms to know exactly how much time is required." technological time management".... Problem is a horse is ahead of this technology...if you can only work with him within that "time" box, he will figure that out and outlast you...Horses are really advanced beings.
