Disappointed in Sega not providing Relic/CohDev with sufficient support to actually deliver what the dev team are both capable of and willing to give us. The advanced infantry battlegroup seem decent enough, but I'm scared that Rangers will simply devolve into "6 bazookas/6 LMGs" and that auto firing howies will be either a gimmick or a sim city players dream. Coastal reserves feels like it was made put of existing assets (not a inheritly bad thing!) but we shall see. If hammer/shield was £8 I'd buy it, but for 16? I'll see if I can scrounge the merit for Advanced Infantry
Relic should have asked for a delay for a year from Sega. It would have been better to delay the game than to release it in the state it was in. I bet you we wont even get a true expansions to company of heroes due to lack luster sales due to poor reviews. They probably just called this 5$ DLC at max a expansion for contract reasons. a Expansion shouldve been a new campaign like D-Day or pacific island hoping campaign. I dont think Relic will get the funds to give us anything to that degree.
@@ohiost74 they probably did ask for a delay, noone wants to release a product with the main selling point (to the average consumer) full of placeholder assets (the italian campaigns UI looked like it was barebones and thats before the actual gameplay). Honestly, I think we'll get another year of content before something like a maintenance mode is put in place, but we shall see
The team hasn't shown competence or that they can deliver. I think it's a talent mismatch. They left out core functionality like replays so they could do a Nintendo release. People often blame publishers, but I can tell you that team leads and project managers on the dev said are some of the most unreliable and flaky people in many cases. They get cover from fans to blame "the suits" but that's usually not what goes on. The devs overpromise and want unlimited resources with no explanation. This is why game devs get paid about half of what software devs working on business software. They're not up to the task.
I think you make some good points. SEGA, as a publisher, has really shown some sketchy tactics. Their handling of Total War: Warhammer 3 should have been a huge red flag for us CoH3 players. They trickle in content each year for money, and lovers of the games will buy into it. However, it's usually never anything significant. And if it is, they charge a large sum of money for it. I say all of this because Relic also develops Age of Empires IV, and that community has been satisfied. However, it's not published by SEGA, but by Microsoft. I think that should be an indicator of the background bullshit.
When I see I have to pay for CoH3 content... Then I realize I preordered premium edition! Then I realized I preordered and haven't played since June... Good to see replays have finally gotten some support 9 months later.
Dont forget AOE4 expansion gets a full new campaign. I think the issue with COH3 that the base game was rushed with many missing stuff that they barely done now with fixing the core experience. Take AOE4 as example. it had replay system ON RELEASE. COH3 needed 10 month after release to get to that. feels like 2024 if the game dont die, we will start getting new stuff. Dec feels like what the game should have been at 1.0.
AoE4 got 2 civs for free AoE4 expansion brings 2 fresh new civs (which were heavily requested by the community) and 4 variations for $15, along with a new campaign. These "variation civs" add way more content and gameplay variety than a battlegroup in CoH3. By comparison, if this CoH3 "expansion" costs more than $3 it will look really bad for them. And even $3 is being crazy generous for how disappointing the whole thing has been (release and expansion content). Ah! AoE4 is not squeezing its community with cosmetics either, another thumb up to them.
Yeah, this update is pretty much 1.0. They had a lot of catching up to do, seems like development time was focused poorly or the game was incredibly rushed. Maybe both.
Now you see what happens when you have: A: a publisher with infinite money B: a publisher that doesn’t force you to do anything C: an actual dev team that doesn’t get laid off
@@bro3217 No kidding, man. You have the same developer but two different publishers. AoE 4 community is loving life. CoH 3 community is on life support. Microsoft, as a publisher, is really doing something special for gaming, imo.
This was a really good summary and critique, good video. Its crazy and galling thay CoH 3 snd AoE 4 are being developed under the same roof. How can they not learn simple lessons from another team inside the SAME STUDIO. It feels like the CoH 3 dev team has been mismanaged, starved of resources and are now being forced to put out the bare minimum at an outrageous price to try and bring in some money and justify continued support. How are they supposed to make a success of the game when they werent allowed to deliver it with basic features required for an online community to form and maintain interest (replays)? How are they expected to generate new revenues when interest in the game is low for the above reason AND the content is crazy overpriced compared to other offerings from THE SAME STUDIO. We can only hope now that we have replay tools that the community to can save itself with organically organised competitive events and player created maps.
33% of an “Expansion” by Relic standards shouldn’t be cosmetics. Also challenge dailies and weeklies in total for a month equals 7,600 merit, so you’d have to grind 2 months straight to get 1 commander.
It's also a pity that they haven't yet reworked the North African campaign. It doesn't feel historically accurate at all. No Panzers I and II, still they give you a Tiger tank at the early stage of Rommel's campaign and put an experimental Black Prince at the Brits' disposal which never saw combat in WW2. That is why I have never touched this single player campaign.
I'm surprised that there isn't a BG for each faction, so we're going to end up with an imbalanced number (and potentially no more in future). It's weird they didn't at least do one for the UKF because they clearly have unused assets such as Australian and Canadian infantry that have been in since launch. It really cannot be difficult to create a new thematic BG for them. And yes, when you compare with the AoE4 expansion (or even CoH2 expansions) it really is ridiculous. What are they playing at?
I think i know the reasoning behind the price policy. Since the game didnt really do very well since launch, they have to increase the prices to break even with development and personell costs. And they also have to show management, that it is a profitable idea to continue working on CoH3. Imagine for a moment that the DLC is priced at 10$ instead of 16$. Because the player count is so low, there already is a smaller pool of potential buyers. A lower pool of potential customers, paired with low prices doesnt make for a very profitable business. So to compensate, they are forced to increase prices. Its really not a matter of content delivered but of predicted market-performance (including the number of potential customers) and previous costs. On the other hand, AoE4 can afford to lower prices since that game is performing much better. They have a larger pool of potential customers and (propably) the revenue to back up any price cuts.
What a ripoff. Pay 60 bucks for an unfinished broken game and now you have to pay them 17 bucks again to fix it a bit. Its just criminally gready. Also i think these battlegroups are going to get a bit funky. 6 weapon upgrades? And jou can get them from upgrading existing infantry. Thats going to get patched out in no time because the squad is just going to be to strong. The worst part is that this trash game is hurting coh2. All this time and money into broken promises and shatterd dreams while coh2 is left forgotten in the past. I dont have the money to pay 77 bucks for a broken unfinished game and i think it is just criminal that they dare to ask. Practises like this ruin the gaming industry making it al pay to win and quick money grabs because that is whats best for the company. Just a sad dystopian future.
It feels like there are only a handful of devs still working on this game at most. It's a shame, I really was so hyped before the release and wanted it to be a great game but Relic made too many mistakes with this game so it was destined to fail. So sad
Rangers do not even have Thompsons? Man... I dropped the game in June and promised myself I will come back to it once they add some new fresh battle groups. We are in November and there are still no Thompsons nor M26 Pershing? I guess I will come back to this game mid 2024 or in 2025...
I don't know how Relic pushes to get CoH 3 published by Microsoft, but holy hell do we need it. My buddies and I have been pushing over to AoE 4 versus CoH. Phil Spencer really has gamers in mind when it comes to publishing games. Hell, we could see a StarCraft 3, perhaps, with Microsoft now owning Acti / Blizz.
im still playing CoH2 and still wonder until now if CoH3 is worth of playing (not buying but playing) as I saw and played the beta the comparism not evening close especially by scaling
for me coh3 still feels weird after release. Troops and tank movement seem kinda slow and not precise as well as the combat. In coh2 i am worried about every single soldier in a squad. In coh3 it feels like it doesnt matter. The sounddesign also doesnt underline the important parts in the game
I honstly just don't get it. Releasing this content for money at all is questionable given the state of the game and how long it has been, let alone at this insane price.
A great disappointment. I love both CoH and AoE, but have always preferred CoH, even the third installment on crutches. But now I'm more and more drifting towards AoE 4 because it's just way more interesting in many aspects now.
interesting battle-groups for the Wehrmacht faction, with the coastal reserve and the artillery officer. Both USF battle groups looked pretty lackluster tho to be really honest, and so did the Wehrmacht ones too. I will probably not buy this one even

Seems on par for how lackluster CoH 3 has been. Idk if Sega just trying to have Relic salvage and milk as mcuh as possible, but releasing an Xpac during current state of the game is pretty crige in my opinion. There is a lot to be done BEFORE releasing an Xpac.
