Prince Albert-Victor, known as 'collar and cuffs' was a complex man. He was a loving emotional man, one only has to read his letters to Princess Helene, to whom I think he was deeply in love. It is said, that as the Royal Family including his fiancee Princess Mary were in his death room at Sandringham he shouted out in his delirium, 'Helene, Helene'. He was also a brave young man in his mid-teens when, with his younger Brother George, they were part of the crew, as Dartmouth Cadets, in 1879, of H.M.S. Bacchante, and iron-clad, screw and sail corvette. The ship sailed around the world over the next two years encountering many dangerous weather situations. It is interesting to note that if the Prince and Princess Mary had married prior to his death, then she would not have been able to marry Prince George, as it was then forbidden if not illegal for a man to marry the widow of his brother. This would preclude the line of succession of Queen Elizabeth II.
