I’m so impressed with what you have created after being one of the best cohost Will had , your doing amazing well… 5 years here and I’m more comfortable at a cocktail bar with mature clients , plus they tend to be government high paid English speaking, mind you that just might be cause all the good cocktail bars are near the government building here in Tochigi lo😂
We need more of these lessons of dinning out in Japan, Just this video alone I made a cheat card on what to say and what to listen for. When I take a trip to Japan this will help a lot. Keep up the great work
I have been living in Osaka for five years now. This video would have helped me a lot five years ago, so I', so glad to see there's a video that's so easy to understand (and dear to heart to a 呑兵衛 like me), Thank you! Keep up the good work!
@@JapanbyFood I would like situations where you are shopping/buying food and the owner doesn't speak English. What is a good way to interact with out offending.
This is my all time favorite episode. What a great way to learn and build confidence, plus avoiding the dreaded chopsticks stabbing of the food. Thanks for this great opportunity
Tip: When you pull the chopsticks apart hold them horizontal and pull up and down instead of side to side. If you are sitting close to a person next to you, you won't accidentally hit them if you pull apart too hard. Great video!
My wife and I always love a new episode of Japan by Food. They are always positive, upbeat, and enjoyable to watch (keep up the good work). I will say, I feel we are overdue for a surprise guest return from The Man, The Myth, The Legend, Mr. Kyle Card!
I absolutely love❤ this! the teachings of it all....its the best I've seen by Japan by food by far 😊🙏 long time follower and can't wait to see more..thank you itadakimasa 🙏
Shizuka with another banger of a video. Especially with introducing these language phrases to say at any restaurant. Will definitely make a Japan visit so much more enjoyable when you’re able to engage w the staff.
Nicely presented video. These are all the words/phrases I've tried to memorise for my current 1st trip to Japan. The main problem I have is remembering the correct phrase at the time, when the conversation seems to be going 10 times faster than i can keep up.. Being a solo traveller I can definitely say, old mate in the video has it easy with someone along side who is fluent and can help out!
I lived in Japan for a few years, just a few comments. 1. The majority of the native Japanese speakers I know pronounce Izakaya with the emphasis on the second syllable "iZAkaya" or a flat pronunciation. It sounds very American when you say it as "izaKAya" 2. When the person at the front of the restaurant asked how many people with "何名様ですか" It's actually strange sounding to reply with the same very polite counter, It sounds more natural to use "2人です" (Futari desu)
Amazing video! We were in Japan in October (my 2nd time in Japan but my wife's first time) We had so much fun in Izakaya's it's a great place to make local friends, especially if you speak a little of the language, many of nights we had were in Izakaya's drinking with locals and making new friends ( and social media is a great way to stay in touch) we tried to go using no English but some times the menus were hard to read so translator app helped ;) but use with caution sometimes it isn't 100% I had ordered what the translator said was wasabi pickles but it ended up being pickled wasabi and that was fire to eat 🥵
Excuse Me is great, I wasn't sure how to say it because I thought I heard some people say it differently, now I know and will use it when the time comes, Arigato Gozaimasu
Love the food varieties at Izakayas .. I just say Biru Ichi Highball Ichi Arigato Gozaimasu.. I do realize some places not so comfortable accepting tips but when say i I buy drink for the staff they seem more ok with it
Love this video. Great way to work on my Japanese skills and I learn some knew restaurant/izakaya etiquettes. Can you also do other types of Japan tutorials such as public transportation/ other dos and donts videos?
Good Day Shizzy. I'm always fascinated by how crowded these little places get. I would love to do a bar crawl with you. Even though I don't drink 🍻😂. As always You Are A Delight. Have a Blessed and Beautiful Day 🇺🇸✝️🇯🇵🥀😘
Excellent video! When we went over, we went with futari when we asked for a table (we did a four month language course before going... Very very broken Japanese lol), but will use Ni-mei next time. Would love to see more skits in the series. Such a fun and practice way to learn. Maybe public transport next time?
The first time I sat at a horigotatsu, I didn't know it was a horigotatsu. I just sat Indian-style, legs crossed, unaware that I was at the precipice. It is a perplexing design. It made me wonder if horigotatsu were much larger in the past and there would be a fire at the center to keep feet warm in the winter.
It was interesting to learn about 二名「にめい」as I had been taught pretty much only the use of 二人「ふたり」. Also nice to learn about the hand gesture to complement asking お会計お願いします。
My mistake was asking for the "bill" (instead of "check"). And I got a "biru" (beer) instead. Happy mistake! My wife says I keep making that mistake! She says it was on purpose!
I like your positive attitude! Seems like you're having fun, and I know it's unintentional, but a bit of overacting makes it feel a little cringey like talking down to a child. 'Okay kids, now this is how you say thank you, can you say thaaank youuu.'
What? More drinking? Hmmm.... There seems to be a pattern. Shizuka likes to PARTAY! Although I feel like we're just chasing the views from the "We get Drunk" video 😅 Love the content! Great acting, too
Hi pretty lady, excellent tips and I definitely learned some new words. The stabbing food with chopsticks is a huge insult to the chef that prepared the food because it means the food is only good for a dead person.
Wait…. Tony steps off of a plane in Japan for the first time and immediately meets Shizuka while I’ve been to Japan many times and never see her!??! Life isn’t fair.

I love how the words are spelled out it makes it easier to learn
居酒屋での振る舞い方の完璧な教科書みたいですね。これは素晴らしい!お会計を頼む時に両手の人差し指でx印を作るのは私は今まで一度もやったことないですけどね。
Shizuka in her natural element, the Izakaya :) 10/10 awesomeness as per usual.
Extra points for today's video so that makes 12/10.

I lived in Japan for 3 years & I have never used "mei" as a counter for myself, it sounds a bit odd. I only used "Futari" - so you're totally okay 👍
