it is a learning event to see how your model flies then directly how you trim it. then to see it fly after your careful report on the modification is so edifying. three or four of these trim sessions often results in a glorious climb aided by thermals resulting in a tiny model so high it would be scary if i had control of it. you work magic and it is beautiful to watch!
Glad to share my experiences with those who inspired me along the way. We're a hobby with no secrets. I appreciate hearing that u enjoy these films. More to come as time allows.
I’m really enjoying your new trimming videos! Thank you for giving a bit of narration to what you’re doing and why. Helps me sort out trimming my own models. Take care!
Thx. I'll admit that my observations & fixes are not always right, as with trim session #1, but it helps to have others watch on the field (or here) and give their spin on what's happening. With so many options for trimming our birds, I just go with my gut in the moment, and hope it works out. In this case, moving the CG forward was the key. Basic lesson learned, again. Ha.
It's amazing to watch you take an aeroplane that kind of flies into one that flies fantastic. You are a master at trimming. And yes that slow mo ROG was awesome. Love that plane.
Thx, Bob. The Spartan was one of my late mentor's favorites, so I couldn't resist building one. I love the bird's stylish looks, especially against the blue.
Your videos keep getting better and better, The camera angles, and scenery along with the music make your videos a work of art. Thank You for taking the time to make them. They are a joy to watch.
Tom is fortunate enough to have the skills, talent, and resources to build models not found in kits. Virtually the entire world of aviation is at his fingertips. I'm just glad there are talented people like Tom so we can marvel at their work.
I’m curious, do you ever build in movable ailerons, or trim tabs in their place to make modifications to your turning flight pattern, as opposed to adding weights to the wingtips? Perhaps the additional front spar on the aileron and hinge material would end up weighing more, anyway? If you’ve done it on a previous video I haven’t noticed it yet. Edit: I should have begun this with complements on the beautiful model.
Thx for the feedback. No to ailerons. I did it once for a 37" Junkers J.1, and it only created problems. I prefer gurney flaps, which remain constant, vs anything hinged or trim tabs. Each gurney flap is a subtle adjustment but it works best for me.
Great video! It is very impressive to watch the progression of flight from the first video to the second! What would be a good airplane to start with? One that would be fairly easy to build and one that is easier to trim. I would really like to build one!
Thx, Doug. Here's a link that gives a good selection for beginner kits. I'm sure one of them would work well for you. easybuiltmodels.com/start.htm#gsc.tab=0
It's a dethermalizer. The process where the tail pivots to 45º via a timer, bringing the model down, out of a thermal. Article on dethermalizers (DTs): @t
Too breezy for me to fly today- but I can walk along side you and silently help trim your model...Thanks for posting! With those changes, this one flies as well as it looks like it should! Beautifully shot too.

I've already used up all the good things to say about your planes so this comment is all those put together . Thanks !
From an ex freeflzighter whom no longer can fly...thank you for sharing and bringing back fond memories ..

Odebírám a sleduji. Je úžasné, co tento druh pohonu dokáže, když to někdo umí a zná. Krásný den.
Díky za milá slova.

@@maxfliart Thank You. If I ever build a larger plane this will come in handy.
