Blend ranges are extremely versatile. Allowing the user to target nearly all adjustments and filters to specific luminosity ranges.
Affinity Photo's blend ranges are a direct replacement for luminosity masks and "blend if" functionality in Photoshop.
Blend ranges are a far more advance, user friendly and elegant solution.

I have watched hundreds of videos before, yet I've learned only how to copy and do things without knowing what I was doing, or why I was doing it. I learned nothing creative... Your videos on the other hand, are INSTRUCTIONAL, and SO creative! Minutes into one of your videos make me go "I got it".
Also, I've not yet seen a single one video where I get lost because of presenters not knowing what they themselves are actually doing. You have excellent knowledge AND you are a superb presenter/teacher. I have no idea how to thank you for what I've learned from watching just a few of your videos.

Finally I get it! Thanks Scott, your simple worked examples with the fill and gradient layres make this so much easier to follow than the other atempts that I've looked at based on live images which are a little too complex to actually be sure what's happening. I'm off to try this out now.

Excellent tutorial! Now I actually understand blend ranges. I'm not sure when I saved this tutorial to my library to watch when I had a chance but I'm glad I decided to watch it tonight. @@ScottWilliamsPhotography hi is it possible for you to create a video on your workflow for a portrait image .. you start in capture one 12 .. then edit blemishes in affinity .. back to capture ond 12 or luminar .. that would be really helpful .. i have capture one 12 and recently got affinity .. just figuring out a way on efficient workflow.. thanks again

very informative tutorial It always amuses me how versatile Affinity is. I might be the only person to say this but I found the background music distracting and a bit annoying. Thanks for time putting this together.
Cheers David. You are right Affinity Photo is a very versatile program. I totally agree about the background music. That was in part due to my inexperience and also to mask the quality from crappy microphone I was using to record my voice. In my later videos the background music has been vanquished. The voice audio is also better quality as I have invested in decent recording equipment.

Another really helpful video Scott. I do happen to be completely BONKERS and intend to try that crazy distortion! I wonder if there are presets for the blend ranges to get you close to the effect you want? Thank you for sharing.
Cheers Rob. I don't see any way of saving blend range presets. But it is a really good idea. I think we should be able to create macro's to do the same thing. I will have to have a look at that and include it in a future video.

Scott, thank you so much for this video. The difference between how PhotoShop and Affinity Photo use blend ranges is probably where the programs diverge the most. I love Affinity Photo. I used Photoshop for years and had no problems at all switching. I think it is easier to use.
@@ScottWilliamsPhotography i am trying to slowly migrate to the affinity photo on the ipad. your tutorials have been awesome as it explain it in concept. if moving from photoshop that would so advantages . I am trying to find out what I can't do in affinity that i can do in photoshop. i think content aware scaling is one of them.
A great vid. In the beginning when you were showing black to white to color gradients, can these be saved styles or presets? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Good idea. I will put that on my list of tutorials.
In the meantime, with a brush selected, check the box between More and Stabilizer on the bar just above the canvas,. That will make the pen pressure control the brush size.

I've been using Photoshop for 21 years. After watching this video, I must say Adobe had better get its act together. This implementation of selecting certain areas puts Adobe's Blend-If to shame. Actually, I don't care if Adobe gets its act together, I'm now certain I'm going to ditch them and move to Affinity's superior (and non-rental) software.
Let me add this is a VERY well done video. I just subscribed.
Hi Johnny. I agree. The blend ranges are so quick and simple to use once you understand them. I ditched Adobe a couple of years ago and can't see myself ever going back. I now mainly use four software packages for my work. Affinity photo, Capture One Pro, Luminar 3 and Aurora HDR. With these I can do everything I need to. And I use the free version of Davinci Resolve to create my TH-cam videos.

Affinity does have channels and Capture One can export to affinity for round trip editing.

I heard that Affinity can be used on iPads, which is great, and now as of a day or two ago iPad's operating system is going to be able to do 2 out of 3 things that held me back: a file manager and native support for file transfer via thumb drive.
Do you have a video that discusses all 4 of the retouching programs that you use and how each has something to offer that the others don't?
Not at the moment but it is a really good idea..
