  • We went out on the streets of Singapore to ask random people what their views of China were. We talked to people from Singapore but also Luxembourg, Japan and Portugal to get their candid responses, and were quite surprised at what we found.

Unfortunately my young nephews & nieces in Singapore are viewing China very negatively. Most of them got their views & opinions from the mainstream media. My challenge to them is go visit China first before forming your opinion. I've travelled the world & to me, China is one of the greatest civilisation.

Singapore English media is actually controlled by the west, e.g. CNA, as the young generation generally only read English, their views are forged just like the young ppl in the western countries. This is dangerous for Singapore, as these young ppl is likely to overthrow the great ruling party of Singapore sooner or later, the tiny country will be ruined in the western style bipartisan chaos.

Mr Barrett, welcome to Singapore. Always admire your work and your sincere attempts to educate people about China. I know it is not easy when there is a lot of people who haven't been there but are heavily influence by media who are biased about China. I am a local Singaporean and first went to China in the early 90's, and had been there quite frequently since, for business and leisure. I am retired now, and in the early days, I don't really have a good impression of the country. To a large extend, this is influenced by western media, the historical attempts by Communist to extend their influence in the region, and the horrible mess they made of their country during the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. However, after visiting different parts of China, interacting with the locals, understanding their views and opinions, and see for my own eyes the progresses that they made; my view of China is largely positive now. Whatever people may say, it is undeniable that they have achieve much, especially for their own citizens. The last thing that they need is external political interference by others who think that they know how to govern China better, especially, when they have made a mess of their own and other nations.

The Luxembourg guy claimed he is a sinologist and therefore knows a lot about its culture and civilization. He should know that to govern China successfully, the center must be strong. Throughout its 5000 years history, if the Emperor is weak, there would be chaos and upheavals. Therefore, the Mandate of Heaven would change. Also, the Chinese value peace and stability in order to have a comfortable life. Therefore, the good of the community is placed above individual interests. And in the Chinese tradition, action speaks louder than words. Therefore you don't see Chinese taking part in political activities in the west, unlike the Indians because they are very good at talking.

I am curious to know the timeline of his stay in China. From the look of his age, it could well be during the Mao's Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap, or during the later Tiananmen Saga. If this guess is correct, then I could see why he makes his opinion. Because if I am in China in that Era, I would have made the same sentiments too. That aside, I think their goverment are evolving and it wouldnt be fair to use a past yardstick to measure the present.

I went to Shanghai in 2003 to set up a representative office. Got myself an apartment there and have been staying there on and off since then. I am semi-retired now, and although I am back in Singapore, I still go there regularly before Covid-19 affected travelling. My opinion of China: Friendly, smart, and hard working people, nationalistic (understandable after what happened in the past), and inefficient bureaucratic process in government and government-owned establishments which can be frustrating when trying to get things done (has improved somewhat; not a fair view as compared to Singapore).
Generally, I have positive opinion of China as long as I leave politics aside which I don't wish to get myself engaged. News and TH-cam videos from the Anglo-Saxon sources tend to be biased against China especially the CCP, and should not be taken seriously.

I am currently working abroad in a Western country. My closest friends are Chinese people - they are friendly, accepting, and patient in teaching you Chinese. The friendships they form with me is even closer to those friendships that I have back in my own country. My Chinese friends eat normal food - rice, noodles, pork/chicken/lamb, snacks - and not “weird food”. They are hardworking and pursue their goals with passion. They are willing to help you if you have questions and are very down-to-earth rather than judgmental. I would say, don’t believe everything you see on media (especially Western media) on China and Chinese people. Actually go to visit China or at least know and make friends with some Chinese people before making stereotypes or casting a (negative) opinion on them. Local media doesn't matter since western msm dominates the world like 80% coverage globally. Most feeble minded young Singaporeans get their opinions on China from tiktok, twitter and such. More so, Singaporean media like CNA literally just repost every news from western media outlets like Reuters, Guardians, Washington Post, CNN etc etc... Perhaps Straits Times and Zhao Bao are more neutral. I'd say most of the news the average Singaporeans consume tend to portray China in a more negative light than neutral.

As a Singaporean myself who have ready my country newspapers for more than 20 years, I will say if you read the news thoroughly you will find the English newspapers in Singapore carry some negatives on China and almost none negative on US because the news sources are from western media agencies such as AP, AFP, Reuters, Bloomberg, NYTIMES, etc. This is also the case for articles written by its own journalists. I have written to few the Straits Times journalists to be fair to China in their articles and get news reports from Xinghua news agency but to no avail.

From the analysis of the somewhat narrow based interviews, we can deduce Sporeans are more neutral as the media is also neutral. For non Anglo speaking countries, you tend to obtain a neutral views cos their media are not so focus on demonizing China. Japan has historical baggage and Korea has identity preservation issue so you tend to hear from them. Luxembourg is anti China as it is one of the 50 states that voted against China on the Xinjiang issue. I remember who are clearly friends and enemies of the Chinese people from the voting trend in UN. As for Anglo speaking countries like US, UK Canada Australia and NZ, I hope they could survive in a multi polar world without much of Asia Africa Latin and Middle East. Towards a multi polar world

Welcome to the Lion City. I am a Singaporean who has lived and worked in China from 2003 to 2016 - when major Chinese cities transformed into modern high-tech metropolises. Before that, I lived in Japan for 5 years. Generally, the population in mainland China don't really care so much about who's in charge in the government, so long as they see economic progress and improvements in their lives. I would like to believe that our views of things are mostly shaped by our experiences and encounters. The problem is, when we don't have the necessary experiences or encounters on a certain topic, our views will then be influenced by the information that we consume. In Singapore, when the local media carries news of a western source, more often than not, the cultural and political biases from the source is also carried over as well, which is unhealthy. Looking at the global economy today, Asia as a whole is a major player and the development of this region collectively will have impacts on the rest of the world. However, in global politics, white supremism still exists. The west should realise that Asian countries have come a long way since WW2. There are Asian countries that have developed pretty well. Asians don't share the same culture or values as the West, but the West should not demonise Asian countries just because of that. It would be more productive and beneficial for the West to adopt a Win-Win mindset when it comes to dealing with Asia, regardless of political systems. As the old adage says, one man's food is another poison. Human societies are so diverse and complex there is no "one size fits all". Just my 2 pennies worth.

For my opinion, this is better way, cuz the protests could easily stir up troubles for the society & no progress. Singapore was one of the first countries that worked with China since their opening up under Deng's guidance. In fact a lot of Chinese government officials were sent to work with Singapore's civil sector and understudy of our system during that period of China's opening up to the world. Singapore also had several joint-ventures inside China on industrial parks etc...
Currently we have also lots of chinese students and exchange students attending our Universities. In short, China isnt a mystery to Singaporeons and most have travelled to China and also some even have relatives in China.

Yes. China learned about Singapore's political and economic system. So now when China booms like Singapore did in 1980s, it going to massive explosion or improvement in China. That's why China and Singapore have strong ties during the LKY period.

Errr Barett is interviewing the folks @ MBS, which tend to have a more mix crowd. If he had gone to Raffles place, or even a suburban down centre, the mix will be very different.

Quite sorry for seeing ppl who has been impacted by media so deeply. Im a Chinese and living in BeiJing now, according to the past 5-6years, I have expeiernced in high speed development in hyperlocal business, which is the thing I have never seen when I was study in U.S or other country. It is super convenient when you can go everywhere only with a phone rather than wallet anymore, you can buy anything from online shop and they will be sent in 2-3 for most cases, also with the good and easy policy of refounding. What I can say is go China first before you forming any clearly idea, try to experience as local people, then you will find it is the one of the most friendly, humble country.

Great interview. I am disappointed with d 2 Singaporeans. Their opinions (if any) are shallow, obviously influenced by d Singaporean media. The young man from Portugal has an indepth n mature opinion while that guy from Luxembourg is obviously a fake sinologist, who is contradictory in his opinions - liking Chinese culture but hating d govt (hey, haven't u seen China's successful poverty alleviation, dynamic manufacturing industries, high speed trains n last but it least, amazing electronics). As what happened in Malaysia, you interviewed d wrong Singaporeans. I am sure there are many Singaporeans who have very positive views of China. Thank you. I love your channel.

It is a really interesting and meaningful vox pop. It shows the opinions of people from different countries towards China. It's really nice that Barrett was correcting some common sense about China such as “HK is part of China”, "China makes efforts to improve the environment".
