    She was crossing the North Atlantic in 1943 I think, with 13,000 American troops. They zig zagged at full speed and no escort and chose the worst weather to avoid Uboats. When they were south of Greenland they were almost capsized by a 95ft wave. That would have been a great disaster.

    I love that ship. I have such fond memories as a child and adult walking her decks, eating lunch, going below deck, etc. She has a special place in my heart.

    I had my 9th birthday on this ship in July 1963 sailing from New York to England (Southampton?). The Jet age had arrived and we had the ship to ourselves it seemed.
    Nine years later I took a friend to see her in Long Beach and ducked under the guide ropes to give him an unauthorized tour.

      Really? It wasn't that full at the time you were on it? What was it like? I've never been on this ship. Sadly I used to live in long beach and I've seen it numerous times but never been on it. I wish they would have preserved the queen mary and made it a part time cruise ship and museum it definitely would've got good revenue. But I guess during this time no one though ships from this Era would still be a huge tourist attraction and people now would pay to just go on a short cruise on it.

    Info error at 2:51. Kaiser could not launch both Europa and Bremen, because in 1929 he was dethroned and had been living in exile in the Netherlands for 10 years.

    The Queen Mary is supposed to be the most famous ship in history, but sinking of the Titanic on its maiden voyage gave it fame

      @masshoudy8474
      Yeah sadly the tragedy is why titanic is so famous, had it not been for it hitting the iceberg and killing so many people alot of us probably wouldn't even know about titanic.

    They certainly made a big deal out of the RMS Queen Mary, a similar welcome she would also receive when she sailed into Long Beach CA back in 1967.

    Excellent! Thank you for sharing this wonderful Film. I live in Huntington Beach California which is 12 miles south of Long Beach where the Mary is docked. I have been there many times and have also seen her sister Queen Elizabeth. While in the US Navy aboard the USS Chicago CG11, we came into Hong Kong harbor for some R&R the day after Elizabeth was set ablaze and capsized to the starboard side. Although I am an American, I feel deeply about both grand ships. 🚢

      ???? An era punctuated by war and the killing of millions. That era was many things, but it most certainly was not in any way "more civilised".

    So many striking ships built in the 20s and 30s, reflecting the advances in techology, mixed in with the new Art Deco style. Of all of those ships, perhaps QM was the least aesthetly pleasing (externally, at least). It still retaining the traditional old Cunard cluttered decks and a slightly boxy appearance. It lacked the very sleek look of the Bremen & Europa, and the Normandie.

    I like how Cunard ships are practically collectible items now, QM is in LA, QE2 is in Dubai, wonder what city in the world QM2 will end up after it retires lol

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure the newer ships have the legend as the old ones. Cunard these days is basically a brand of manufactured quaintness for cruise passengers. QM2 will be scrapped. And I suspect that very few people will care.
