    I love the bauhaus look of this pen. The Art Pen was my first fountain pen. I used an Art Pen with fine nib all the way through my college years :) The pen is light. It was absolutely comfortable for prolonged use like taking notes on long lectures the whole day... It's a snap cap, so it's absolutely suitable for everyday use -- though the barrel is fairly long so it may not fit a regular pen pouch. What is really nice is that the nib doesn't dry quickly so I did not have to cap & uncap all the time. It never skipped, there were never ever hard starts.
    Some of my long-term use experiences (17-18 years or so): the white painting on the barrel and the black one on the top of the cap (that shows nib type) wears off. Also the matte barrel becomes shiny and fingerprints are more obvious. These are all understandable and fine. What became a problem after 15-16 years(!) is that after so much use the cap and the section do not fit securely anymore. The cap is loose. It has to do something with the section because the old cap securely fits on a new section... All in all, it was a great investment and a reliable companion for many-many years.
    I recently bought a new Art Pen that ended up as a section-donor for my old one, so I still use the old worn barrel, cap and the old red ring :)

    I think you can get replacement rings in various colours to indicate ink colour in the pen, I remember seeing rotring pens used in the architects drawing room at my father's factory.

    Thanks very much for the overview, Stephen! I really enjoyed watching this. Not only the review, but your Gothic and Old English writing is fantastic! Much better than you seem to think, actually.

    Great review. You certainly know your way around the calligraphy instrument. This was a great opportunity to demonstrate tie-dye procedures on your shirt.
    Thanks. Peace✌️

    Years ago I bought the same pen although equiped with an ordinary medium nib and guess what? I've been using it on a daily basis ever since and shout out as loud as I can that it is simply FANTASTIC! May I add that I paid less than 20 euros for it brand new... Hard to beat for sure! Would do it again anytime and recommend it to everyone wholeheartedly. Go ahead, you won't be disappointed, take my word for it! And no, this is NOT a commercial...

    got gifted one of these by a priest (not even kidding) when i was about 10. forgot most of the calligraphy i begged him to teach me and kind of never picked it up again. though i am studying graphic design now and just found the pen in my drawer! thought i'd look up some tutorials on how to actually use it... thanks for the help, was having some trouble unscrewing it since it's been a while since it had last been used! it's still not writing but i'll figure it out...

    Thank you for this review, Stephen. I recently became a pen addict, adding about 16 pens to my original two pens this summer. After acquiring all of these pens with fine or extra fine nibs, I became interested in calligraphy to add some flourish to my handwriting. I got a 1.1 mm nib for my Edison Collier and love it. Your video helped me realize 1.5 mm may be the max I'd like to go for now. (Regular viewer, first time commenter. lol)

    Rotring is of course well-known for their technical pens. The qualities you'd want in those are reliability and predictability. Judging from your review, the calligraphy set also seems to be in line with this. It may look a bit boring, but it gets the job done. Deutsche gründlichkeit.
    And, oh yes, Stephen-grade calligraphy may not be world-class, but it still looks amazing to me. There's absolutely no reason to panic about that.

    Stephen, are you sometime in the future perhaps going to do a shoot out between the Rotring calligraphy set and the Lamy joy? I would very much enjoy that, actually.
    Thank you very much for all the awesome reviews!

    I always wonder... are barrels that expensive? Why not just make it a “full” 3-pen set instead, that'd be so much easier to use instead of having to screw the barrel to the pen you want to use?

    I just want Rotring to make fountain pens again. Freeway was and still is the best fountain pen I had ever owned. They hold theyr value and I totally get that. I had one for 16 years, used it every day, still amazing performance, still writes nicely. Nothing, even pens triple it's price, come close to it in my eyes. Grip section could be a bit wider but that is it.

    The Artpens are the best pens I've ever owned, and I have used them constantly for 30 odd years. The Fine and Extra Fine are my favourites.
    There are also very rare Artpengraph variants. I have two of those in different widths, and they have needle nibs, like a Rapidograph or Isograph or technical drawing pen - but otherwise the pens are the same. They are quite usable in general writing, and I have also used them constantly.
    The Artpens are very reliable indeed. A great selling point when you use them in a working environment - when there is no time for faffing around. The plastic material improves with age. It gains a smoother more polished surface over years of use, and I like that.

      @stenmoller5700 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have also had them for 30 odd years, and use the 1.1 for everyday writing, including Chopin Liszts. 1.5 is the largest I use regularly as I personally can hardly use the broader 1.9 and 2.3, as, due to tremor, I can no longer write as slowly and cautiously as they require me to. I felt like getting a fancy pen as I love good tools, but end up wondering why I should fork out hundreds of dollars on a 149 or a 1911 or something similar. I certainly will not do it for status. Perhaps I'll just stick with my Artpens for another - perhaps - 30 years :-)...

    I have five Rotring ArtPens and I love their nibs; they are THE BEST italic nibs in my opinion.
    The 2.3 nib is amazing. All the ArtPen nibs are very smooth, and well machined, and sturdy and durable.
    However, these pens are not for transportation. I have leakage.
    Also, I strongly recommend against using them as an eyedropper, unless you add an O-ring and silicone grease.
    The red ring is plastic, not rubber. Don't trust the plastic-on-plastic seal.
    If left alone, the ArtPens will evaporate and dry up quickly.

    Which kind of ink converter do you use? Is it similar to Rotring Art pen, or is the calligraphy pen different? the store labels it as 'Fine' and 'Extra Fine'

    Can one buy the Artpen bodies alone without the nibs? (If so, would you post where I could buy them).

  • @donna30044
    @donna30044 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    A bit of silicone grease on the threads would help ensure against leakage if it's being used as an eyedropper pen, and would also help keep the red ring from slipping off easily. Might be a bit much to secure the ring with a tiny drop of cyanoacrylate ("Super") glue.

    One thing that you don't mention in comparing the Rotring and Lamy Joy pens is that the Lamy can be posted, while the Rotring cannot. The Lamy body has a slight rubbery feel and its girth is larger than the Rotring. Both pens are about the same length capped. When the Lamy is posted, its length doesn't increase, which is nice, and to me it has a more balanced feel when posted. Both pens, when capped, remain wet for an impressive length of time. The Lamy, of course, will accept any of the amazing variety of Lamy nibs, including the 2.3mm. The cap on the Lamy is the same as that of the Safari, so if you want to replace the silver one that comes with it, go crazy.

  • @hoggif
    @hoggif 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a great starter set, well worth the money. I think I like Pilot Parallels more though but is it has only broader nibs (from 2.4mm up only I think). I'm aware of no other competition in that price range besides those two.

    • @donna30044
      @donna30044 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +hoggif -- Goulet has all four of the Parallels as a "Rainbow Set" for $32.00, plus $22.00 to include converters if you wish. I use mine as eyedroppers with no problems as long as I don't over-tighten the barrel against the O-ring and I do proper maintenance - including new silicone grease after a deep cleaning.
      You can get the individual pens at about $10.00 each.
      The pens come as 1.5, 2.4, 3.8, and 6.0 mm and use Pilot cartridges and converters.

    I bought a set kind of like this from China, a no name wooden looking brand with 5 different nibs but the set was terrible. However I was able to work on it with hammers, sandpaper and a blow torch and now they perform so much better. :-) I do like that Rotring set though, the Rotring 600 is my favorite mechanical pencil of all time and I used to mess with the Rapidographs in HS but those were terribly fiddly and always clogged and then when you cleaned them the fine needles bent, arghhhhhhhh!

    Thank you for the review. I like this set very much. If I might ask a question, I have a sailor with a MF nib I would like it to be stubbed, but there is not much tipping material. Do you have an opinion on gold stubs with no tipping? I know gold is relatively soft, but I am hoping normal fountain pen use would not wear the gold of the stub all that quickly. Thank you sir.

    • @sbrebrown
      @sbrebrown  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doreen Dee A nibmeister can still stub it. Of course, less tipping material equals less line variation

    all ArtPens usually work great, not only the stub nibs. the standard M nib is great for signatures and lettering. the ribs on the section are another matter. i wish they would bring out "carry" versions, as using the long things in a meeting would look pretentious ... and we don´t want that. i have four or five of these despite that.

    I did enjoy the review but you repeated yourself a bit about the top of the caps with the nib widths... other than that the best part of your review was the actual use of the pen which I wish you would of gotten too sooner rather than at the very end. But showing off how it doesn't skip, how well the ink flows, and comfort was golden. I have the white Lamy pen which looks a lot like the rOtring Artpen. It too came with 3 different nibs although only 1 cap, but 3 different packs of inks.. black/purple/light blue. However the Lamy has a rounded hole to look at the cartridge. But I've heard great things about rOtring Artpen. Also the fact that I paid $50 USD for the Lamy and I've seen the rOtring Artpen set for the same price... I use rOtring's mechanical pencil and love it. But they are a very pricey brand. But thank you for taking the time to make and upload this video. It is much appreciated.

    What an interesting review, and a great demo! Btw, I think your writing is fantastic 🙂. I’m very fond of a couple of the ArtPens (fine and extra-fine) that I’ve sketched with for over 20 years. They have held up beautifully, are very easy to clean, etc. I didn’t realize they were available with calligraphy nibs and really look forward the trying them out. Thank you.
