Not everyone can do it, and he did, quite well. Do yourselves a favor: buy the album, give it a few listens, and you'll find that you've been missing out on a great album by the best band ever
Essentially the same guitar track given to Mitch Malloy to write a song around , which turned into "It's The Right Time", when he was being courted to be new lead singer before Gary
way behind the curve on this one but I do like this! I guess I am one of the few who like III as well. I think it was a great album with great music. It was a departure from previous albums but that's probably why I like it. I like all of Eddie's material, especially when he made drastic changes. He was such an incredible talent. Just like the loss of Jeff Beck, there will never be another Eddie Van Halen.
I really feel like if Gary would've worked on the vocal melody during the chorus a little more, this song would've been a hit. Although, I do think Eddie's guitar work here is pretty much perfect.
This isn’t a demo it’s a completed version and was listed in initial track releases. At the last minute they yanked it and put on Josephina instead, the song Gary wrote for his mother.
Eddie thought he could achieve the same success with Gary after Sammy that he did with Sammy after Dave ! The only problem was, Gary is not a songwriter like Sammy or Dave 😢
At 2:05....Mike is smiling for the press, but my opinion is that in his mind he's really thinking..."boy, if anyone knew how fucked up things are....". I don't mean Gary in the band, but Eddie's behaviour and probably missing Sammy. VH III certainly got a bad rap, but there are some good moments on this album and many of them better than what's on ADKOT. The production of this album wasn't great imo, and like Gary said in an interview the band never had time to gel, should have did a mini fun tour before even going into the studio. I give him lots of credit for trying, but overall Eddie and manager Ray Daniels conned Gary into this fiasco with no real intent of ever keeping him the long term. Great song here though....
I couldn't agree more. They should have toured first then made the album. In fact if I remember correctly Alex once said that the songs on a record were usually performed somewhere like a club or something before they recorded them. As far as production goes Mike Post never did a rock album before this and I think he was an idea guy that Ed brought in. I would have loved to have seen Mike Shipley produce the VH3 album. Listen to his work on the Pull album by Winger and you'll see.
If you knew how fucked up things were in VH at the time, including the business/money end, you would understand. That's all I was simply saying. The drama queen, by far, would be you.
Van halen 3 is very unrated it just needed a chance that I believe it didn't get. Each singer brought a different element to the band. The band knew how to make each element work to produce music that worked.
I remember a lot of fans was still peeved about the big swerve with Roth when this came out. After hearing the two new songs on the Greatest Hits CD all we could think of is what might have been. There was some really good music on Van Halen 3, but sometimes Cherone's voice sounded like claws against a chalkboard. And I agree with everyone else here that this should have been on the album. You could have easily cut How Many Say I for this one.
what might have been is probably an album that wouldn’t have done well at all just like vh3, a roth album in 96 or 98 wouldve been cool but it probably would’ve suffered the same fate sales wise and they probably would’ve got shit on because of the current musical climate. Dave was a dinosaur and his whole shtick and image died when a lil aint enough came out, his follow up album in 94 didnt do any better either. Even if they had managed to do something album wise with dave in 96 they would’ve been at each others throats for stuff that happened in the 80s, its amazing that ed & al were able to do what they did with dave on the “reunion “ tours I like the two “new” roth songs they cut for best of volume 1 but those were literally leftovers from the balance sessions with roth lyrics added.
Vh3 was a AWESOME album...different ed using all his skills, too bad nobody gave Gary a chance ....hes a great part of VH,and hes ignored by the fans and industry.....🤘i love this album

Eddie's playing is spot on, and some of the best that I've ever heard. People are too critical on Gary Cherone. He had to fill the shoes of DAVID LEE ROTH and SAMMY HAGAR. Not everyone can do it, and he did, quite well. Do yourselves a favor: buy the album, give it a few listens, and you'll find that you've been missing out on a great album by the best band ever
Rest in PEACE EDWARD
Essentially the same guitar track given to Mitch Malloy to write a song around , which turned into "It's The Right Time", when he was being courted to be new lead singer before Gary
Yep.
Imho, I like the lyrics and chord progression better with the Mitch version.
way behind the curve on this one but I do like this!
This is good. 3 Cheers for Michael A!
I really feel like if Gary would've worked on the vocal melody during the chorus a little more, this song would've been a hit. Although, I do think Eddie's guitar work here is pretty much perfect.
Great song:)
This isn’t a demo it’s a completed version and was listed in initial track releases. At the last minute they yanked it and put on Josephina instead, the song Gary wrote for his mother.
Copycat!
If Mitch Malloy sing this song, that would be great! IMHO.
He did sing on his version of this song called "Its the right time"
Killer.
This song from Van Halen III. Why did it not make it on Van Halen III , love this song . Eddie Van Halen rocks !!!!!
"From Afar" and “Year to the Day” might be some of the best rock songs ever…too bad this album gets looked over so much.
Without You is an anthem right up there with Jump and Right Now.
Ahhhh....
No
Best rock songs over ? Feel bad for your ears 😕
A year to the day is a just as good as anything Van Halen has done. This sounds like early 80's movie soundtrack stuff.
Eddie thought he could achieve the same success with Gary after Sammy that he did with Sammy after Dave ! The only problem was, Gary is not a songwriter like Sammy or Dave 😢
i love Mitch malloys version!!! What could have been....
great song,
This has the general gist of that track they did with Mitch Malloy! Definitely prefer his version a lot more. Such a turbulent time for this band
i got brand new 2 me VH today thanks 4 this post god bless you..
Without you and day of the year are great from VH3
this is a great video. its the video for major fans like me
RIP KING EDWARD
Even if they had managed to do something album wise with dave in 96 they would’ve been at each others throats for stuff that happened in the 80s, its amazing that ed & al were able to do what they did with dave on the “reunion “ tours
I like the two “new” roth songs they cut for best of volume 1 but those were literally leftovers from the balance sessions with roth lyrics added.
I like VH3, and I wish that they'd included this on the album. I could've lived woithout Once, for instance.
Definite tonal quality !!! Gary did great in a sea of whatever ...
This song would have been HUGE had it been on the VH III album.
Pffft hell no!
VH III was so miss managed. What could have been? ☹
@sphen5150 The song was finished. But VH had their doubts, and it was replaced by "Josephina" at the very last minute, which caused a delay.
Vh3 was a AWESOME album...different ed using all his skills, too bad nobody gave Gary a chance ....hes a great part of VH,and hes ignored by the fans and industry.....🤘i love this album
I wish this were on the album
