    I have this same exact setup! I encountered the same problems with storage & too many hard drives. I have loved the NAS & will never go back. I did not know about the switch & just purchased it from your link. Thanks for sharing!

    Oh and thank you for the video! It was very informative. It's a reminder that I will need to get a NAS at some point.

    Interesting stuff! I've had this exact Synology NAS for years. We use it for mainly long term storage + having remote access for editors to drop project files directly to my home office. Which is a very nice workflow running multiple editors across the state. I've never heard of the 10gb card, which might be a nice upgrade for us especially for upload/download speeds. Currently I run this NAS for large backup files paired with built in SSD space on our editors computers.

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 10Gbe card (and proper Ethernet cables) is crucial!

    Synology units are solid 👍 Difference between hub and switch is hub is old tech where only one device on the network can send or receive at a time. Switch is full duplex and all hosts can send/receive simultaneously. End result is much faster data throughput 😅

      Not gonna lie, I didn’t understand most of that hahaha

    I just installed a Synology NAS in my network rack, 8 bay (so same as what you have, but the rack version). I only installed 4 16tb drives as a start.

    The problem with spinners vs SSDs is you just dont get the same sort of random access read speeds which are pretty crucial for editing large raw files. Even when using a NAS with multiple drives in a raid config. I love my synology unit, but it really is my archive volume. All my edits happen on an SSD raid.

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup like I mentioned in the video, I typically edit bigger client projects from an SSD (reasons mention too), but once edited, it’s easy enough to make a small revision or export from the server if need be down the road. Simple relink of files and good to go.

    I HATE Synology's website portal and software. I can't playback videos from there you have to download them first. Do you know if there are any other solutions? Why can't I just use it like an external SSD and have it pop up on my Macs finder menu?

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I THINK back remotely (off your network) relies heavily on the upload speed of your internet. Synology drive has worked pretty good for me. Mine pops up in my finder window, but can’t remember if I did anything special. Seriously, go check out SpaceRex TH-cam channel!

      You definitely can. Mount your NAS with either the afp or smb protocols under finder

    Many if not most creators aren't video editors. But yes get a nas... IT 101

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      haha i guess it is the best investment for digital creators. certainly useful to more than just video editors tho

  • @philippscheithauer

    I mean this with no bad intent, but I hate that this is another Synology product video that a creator does to get that NAS for free. I get it, these things are expensive but I have seen this same video literally 10 times. All the creators recommend Synology and pitch it as the go-to-solution and what boxes it checks, but yet don't pay for it themselves (hard drives may be excluded). Again, love your content and all and I get you need to pay bills. Just sucks for the viewer to watch that content over and over again when we all know it's because of getting that thing for free...
    Also an important note for everyone: NAS is meant for data availability and NOT long term secure storage. So you would have to at least combine this with a cloud backup or use another off-site solution. And NAS units CAN fail even with that redundant drives...

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I mean I get what you’re saying but I also spent over $3000 on everything to get this server working. I did my research, and this NAS was exactly what I wanted, I reached out to Synology (not the other way around) and they did send the enclosure and card which was mentioned clearly in the video. I wasn’t paid a penny for it (except for maybe the $1.47 in ad revenue I might make lol), so I have ~$3K+ in addition to the time it took to make this video invested. One of the reasons why I waited so long before making this video was to make sure I had enough time with it to be confident enough to recommend it. If I wasn’t, I’d send it back and you’d be surprised how many products I test and send back. What you mention towards the end is covered in this video too…
      Appreciate your comment, but I think you know from my other gear content that I am not a salesy kinda dude. I could care less if someone buys one. I’m just sharing my experience.

      So if he paid for it that would change the information that he shared? He reached out to partner with them to share details with us FOR FREE. He bought all of the drives and components needed to get it up and running.
