What an awesome boat. I watched videos of it racing at 33 knots, UNBELIEVABLE! I loved it when my sailboat was screaming at 12 and 14 knots. So exhilarating.
Note that the Port rudder has been removed to prevent it slicing him in half when he fell off.. Skipper would have to sail very gingerly and flat on Starboard tack to have any steerage from the remaining Starboard rudder...
Hy man, they are called canting keels, as in they can move from side to side to give the boat better righting. Basically it enables the boat to carry more sail and go faster.
To those who have posted here that the boat has two keels, that is not correct. It has two rudders, but only a single canting keel. In the video, they have the keel canted all the way to weather, and as the boat heels, the keel comes all the way out of the water. The moves the righting moment outside of the normal limits of a fixed keel boat, but as whatcanisayflur notes, it is not a fast way to sail the boat. It is a pretty good stunt on the part of Alex Thomson though!
Those boats usually have one keel and two retractable dagger boards. I think I can even see the fitting for the port dagger board. It's also possible to trim the keel, which is probably done here so that the man could walk on it, other than that - it's some pretty amazeballs frikkin' sailing. Helmsman is doing a nuts job!
in reply to Mr amberose. do you not see great fun and adventure in the keel walk? what a great fun advert for Boss and Alex . WoW brilliant. fingers crossed for him in vendee globe.
It is a Canting keel which enables the crew to tilt the keel. It is not without question two keels (as claimed in some comments). Some boats who use this system has an extra keel which can be lifted and lowered when necessary, but not all.
On looking into the history of Boss, they are not a 'savoury' company I seem to remember. However, it's always difficult to know if what we read is true or a competitor doing the dirty! I didn't do more research on it
Note that it says 'the keel of *his* 60ft yacht' - and the crazy thing is it's real, not CGI. These insanely fast boats have a 'canting' keel using hydraulics to tilt it way up on the high side when the boat is heeling over. This moves the counterweight as far over as it can go to counteract the huge force of the wind on the massive sails. This was one wild ride - even with the keel canted way out, the boat is heeled over upwards of 60 degrees, to get the keel all the way out of the water.
No i'm actually sure about it. You can check the boats specks, i have and it's a canting keel! The boat can never be this heeled to sail fast, it's basically digging in the water...(oh and btw i am a graduate in yacht design so you can trust me on this one)
If it was a canting keel then it would never have risen out of the water in the first place, under those conditions. They are not making way while heeled to that point, merely using the momentum they had gained between shots.
It's called a canting keel, meaning they can swing the keel from one side to another to get more righting moment, which allows you to carry more sail and save on weight. Google on canting keel, and you'll see it explained more clearly
Hey man, while your down there, do you think you could give the logo a quick rub down. It's looking a bit dingy. Thanks Chap! Seriously though, very cool stunt.
No, actually one can remain healed like that for as long as the balance can be maintained. And on a boat of this size, it would take longer to react than a scaled down version of the same design.
Maybe not That is a very tall mast with a square sail so the sail area at head is almost the same as the sail area at the foot. So if you are in conditions that call for a reef, you could show the full sail and at the right point of sail, you could sheet in the main and genoa, pull the traveler right up to windward and swing the keel to windward. That would heel the boat like crazy but keep it moving forward. It would however be impossible to steer.
Shit I'm almost more impressed by the ski dirver, pull up along side that keep long enough and close enough for him to get onto it in choppy windy waters. Is pretty good piloting of the ski. He's the real hero, without him wasn't possible
The rudders on these boats are actually kick up rudders so if you happen to hit a semi-submerged container or something then the rudder will flick up to stop it from tearing off the back of the boat, all they have done is flick it up.
Is that the correct position of the canting keel when powered up and underway? You put the keel in the opposite direction of the mast lean? For example, mast leans to the right, keel is canted to the left.
I wasn't talking about the keel walk (that's amazing). I was replying to someone saying that they could sometimes get their boat back up without getting wet.
Best of all... he's wearing a suit
..Dah',oneDude said about video:'Makes me want to buy a suit.' - yea'for.. *Sure.* (funny'tho..) *it* ..makes me want to take a shite.
Don't you mean a 'wet' suit?
What an awesome boat. I watched videos of it racing at 33 knots, UNBELIEVABLE! I loved it when my sailboat was screaming at 12 and 14 knots. So exhilarating.
Hmm, I've been trying to figure out could have possibly sponsored this stunt, but I can't find any brand labels anywhere in the video...
It's subtle...
looks like a great day at the office!
Dah,oneDude said about video:'Makes me want to buy a suit.' - yea'for.. *Sure.* (funny'tho..) *it* ..makes me want to take a shite.
He is freaking crazy amazing! Love this!
That is EXACTLY what I was gonna say!!!! Freaken AWESOME!
..oneDude said about video:'Makes me want to buy a suit.' - yea'for.. *Sure.* (funny'tho..) *it* ..makes me want to take a shite.
Alex if sailing stops working out for you, try a role in a James Bond movie, I think it would suit you quite well!
Note that the Port rudder has been removed to prevent it slicing him in half when he fell off.. Skipper would have to sail very gingerly and flat on Starboard tack to have any steerage from the remaining Starboard rudder...
Alex probably looked down at that many times when it was heeled over and said "I bet I can walk on that".
Hy man, they are called canting keels, as in they can move from side to side to give the boat better righting. Basically it enables the boat to carry more sail and go faster.
Great work Alex - very cool...
Also - Nice suit....
Cheers
Greg

Thank you for these clarifications.
Excellent presentation of the Hugo Boss! Good luck, Alex!
I can't stop watching this!

Brilliant video. Mad people. Stuntman insane! Loved it!

Just one look at the sponsors for this sport and you realize what kind of audience watches.

Wow really LIKE A BOSS.

Awesome man... truly like the BOSS.
Good thinking taking the port rudder off. Might have made getting home a bit slow though
@NOCK88 the boat has daggerboards on either side of the keel. you can see the port daggerboard--it's retracted of course--in the "B"
Awesome
Someone's keeping that boat well heeled over - which Alex should be thankful for....!
What a cool cat walk! Will we have the whole collection presented like this?
Great stuff, very challenging. Brave man!
Sheet, that's so punny it keels me.
Congratulations. You win the internet.
awesome!
That is so boss
Hey man, while your down there, do you think you could give the logo a quick rub down. It's looking a bit dingy. Thanks Chap!
Seriously though, very cool stunt.
WOOOOOWWWWW!!! THIS GUY IS FREAKING CRAZY, AND THE SAILORS TOO. DAMN!!!! TAKE WIN
I'm not big on marketing stunts, but this is still effing rad.

truly epic+legendary.
Can't do this one either. No suit!!!!
WOW, thats was pretty spectacular
thanks alot. makes sense if they can adjust the keel :)

tht wud be the best facebook profile pic ever (done like a boss)
Right on
Taking it to the top!
Hugo Boss missed an opportunity to make a really cool commercial from this.
The boat is almost 180/0 degrees.
Good job
super
very nice job!!!!!
I don't usually ride a boat. But when I do, I make sure it is in a very awesome way.
