It's absolutely mind-boggling to me that you could spend so much time talking about China's policy regarding foreign automotive manufacturers, but not address the fact that Tesla, an all-American company, has made history by convincing the Chinese to let them own their entire manufacturing operation in the country. So frustrating.
A bit behind the scenes . . . This was only a portion of an almost 3 hour conversation with Bob. There will be a second episode from Bob coming later in this season of Inside the MotoMan Studio that drills down more specifically on many OEMs . . . Including Tesla.
I tend to agree with the vision Mr. Lutz puts forward, but I think his timeline is off by at least 50 years with as much as 25 years of an additional delta. Futurists, like Science Fiction writers, always undershoot the timeline. Example - Blade Runner takes place in 2017. Heck, that type of society even minus the dystopia, is 200 years out. The only counterexample is James S.A. Corey - they are probably pretty close to accurate with The Expanse. Coming back to Mr. Lutz, he is definitely a very intelligent guy. Love the channel MM. Count me in as a subscriber.
I don't know guys. My problem is not technology or the legality which everybody focuses on. It's the processes, methodologies, hardware manufacturing, software coding and corporate cultures that have to change. People, managers, directors, executives and boards are conditioned to manage risk. It's a human thing. In an AV world we have to have hardware and software that are developed, manufactured, built, tested, audited, etc with a NASA level of 0% tolerance of risk for errors throughout the entire system. This is a revolutionary change not an evolutionary change covering so many companies, supply chains. As much as I hate the concept of AV, centralized transportation and more government control over my life, I'm not saying it's not inevitable I don't think it's possible even in 30 years. The logistics and processes and precision required would make a space launch look like a hiccup.
Motoman, I really enjoyed this episode format with the intersectionality of other topics related to transportation going back and forth between them. Brilliant format and shows the depth and quality of both the guest and the interviewer. Bob Lutz was the perfect guest with the real world experience for this format.
Its like he has had an epiphany since last time i heard him, now he really tells how he sees the world rather than what someone expects/tell him to say. This is the bob lutz i wanna see everytime. Great to see some good insight into this guys mind without having an agenda.

The only problem with government intervention is when the little guy gets it. I'll trade the minimum wage for mandatory unionization, let the laborers set the labor rate, not big businesses in collusion.

Bob Lutz was a MASSIVE Disappointment in his last stint at GM. Sorry to say, because I was expecting and hoping for him to lead the turnaround from a product standpoint. Instead, we got more of the garbage that GM was producing for the decades before. Ok, the Viper is a notable exception, and he’s had a couple more; but his last run at GM was terrible. Let’s not forget he co-ran GM into Bankruptcy. Then blamed everyone but himself. What happened to Great Product, Bob?!

If Waymo, Cruise, Pony, Mobile Eye, etc. get to autonomy first, their first mover advantage will indeed be short lived. If Tesla is first with their lidarless machine learning approach, their first mover advantage will be both significant and long lived. Even if competitors have the road map Tesla lays out, they will still need millions of vehicles driving billions of miles to collect real world data. They would obviously accelerate the manufacturing and distribution of vehicles as much as possible, but it will still take time. After getting the cars on the road they will still need to train the data which takes more time. It's really hard to tell at this point, but it looks like in the AV race, Tesla is either dead last, or way in first.
I think his crystal ball view will probably turn out to be pretty distorted in the end. His predictions amount to the most intensive and extensive regulation of privately-owned transportation in history, while all political trends prevailing in the U.S. and in some other places as well have been running in exactly the opposite direction for at least 20 years now. The technology has nothing to do with it, and even whatever economics considerations might prevail are going to have to reckon with a political environment which for all the rationally foreseeable future are actively hostile to such a regulatory environment. If you can't take away something as useless as an AR-15 you think you are going to get Bubba's pickup truck, or his Corvette, or even Mom's Toyota? He is making the science fiction writers' classic mistake seen for at least the last hundred years, making predictions based on technical possibilities rather than on what people will actually tolerate, and in particular the ever-increasingly powerful decision-maker demographic. (And no, he isn't even right about South Padre Island, Texas, where these snowbirds from the cold, frozen north fail to reckon with high heat, oppressive humidity, and hurricanes.)

Well...The necessity of auto leases are a byproduct of over-inflated car prices. Leasing and long term financing are misused and overused to move large volumes of overpriced vehicles.
Wow incredible! Never would have guessed that a young impressionable Trump would have had an influence from a powerful man like Lee Iaccoca back then. Lee was a big man on campus and Trump likely saw that and wanted it. Lee probably had advocated for American Industry and got praise from both sides of the door and that's where trump gets his nationalistic 'bravado' from!
Absolutely amazing. What a great example for future generations. Especially today's young adults who don't understand civics, hard work and family values. I use Bob and my father as examples of people of a generation for my three children that they should aspire to emulate as I still do.

The way I see it if America no longer has middle classes then not many family can continue living on luxuries stuffs or driving any vehicle price above 100 grand. So for those car companies that produce expensive cars without consumers to buy will be bankrupt! Meanwhile more average car companies continue making more affordable cars for consumers to buy and they making more than demand need it will end up more and more new cars but not much buying, it is happen in all industries in America from electronic to clothing, car.....any company making good stuffs cheap will survive and growth if not they will start closing one by one they all will be bankrupt and they will die out!

Interesting; there are parallels between Bob Lutz's outlook and those of Andrew Yang (Democratic hopeful).
