from Monty Python's Flying Circus Season 1 - Episode 05 - Man's Crisis Of Identity Recorded 03-10-69, Aired 16-11-69 I'm slowly uploading the entire Flying Circus series... Got any requests?
My cat had a squirrel two feet away from him today, while I was sitting with him in the backyard. He literally just stared at the squirrel and didn't do a THING! I think he needs to be confused.
The first time I saw this I was a teenager. My Dad and I were watching and couldn't catch our breath because we were laughing so hard. Now I'm 58, watched it again, and almost died laughing! It's such a bizarre premise for a comedy skit.
The best part is that they're so damn elaborate, everything is so over the top & fantastic. That stage... I would have loved to sit in on their brainstorming sessions. "Are you at your.... wit's end?!"
There is only one word to describe this sketch: bonkers. Yet still so darn hilarious! The pythons were (and some still are) comedy loonies who rewrote comedy for good. RIP Graham Chapman. You will always be remembered as hilarious.
So, this skit apparently single handedly spawned forth Jackson Galaxy the cat whisperer from "My Cat From Hell" as well as "America's Got Talent" Lovely.
I love how John always says the first words in a sentence, pauses for about two seconds, then yells the last word. He does it all the time, not just in this.
I used to confuse my friends cat for fun before I even heard of this sketch we thought it was hilarious, and then I heard about this sketch about a week later weird
I've been subbed for a few years now I think, definitely been watching your vids for that long, so weird to see this here from when you were probably younger than I am now
This was the first Python sketch I ever saw. I went to school the next day and a few of us started talking about it. After that we never talked about anything else!
Graham Yearley Me too and iirc it wasn't on the actual show itself that I saw it, I think this sketch was shown by viewer request on Points Of View on BBC1, anyway I was hooked.too.
I have to say that it becomes more difficult with each attempt as the cat becomes more jaded with age. One could risk injury -- about which the cat cares not, unless it's amusing.
I love how it's got its ears to the sides, sfar s I know that means it's actually confused :D Like a dog tilting its head. Attention has been paid to every detail! .3.
"Your cat is suffering from what we vets haven't found a word for." THis sketch is ledgendary in my family. When I was little, I had a stuffed cat that was so lifelike that my cats kept coming up to it and sniffing it, or poking it it and running away when it fell over. We called it the Confuse-a Cat!
There's a certain internal consistency to their nonsense that makes it both outlandish and at the same time comfortable. They take familiar contexts and twist them in imaginable ways.
Just watching everything they did, you can see how all these cartoons and comedies base their jokes on python sketches. South park was majorly influenced by them, a lot by the way of how monty pythons sketches were so far fetched and fictitious, Cant have a favourite monty python, but i really do miss Graham!
True, but if they had the option back then, I think they would've manipulated swearing as well. But now yes it's a lot less restricted and quite a tuff crowed to please. So I guess South Park aimed at pissing everyone off. Lol if you haven't seen south parks dedication to Monty Python, I strongly advise you to! They kidnap terry Gillian's mum! With a very good South Park version of the dead parrot sketch :)
The first seasons of The Simpsons is also heavily influenced by Monthy Python, in a brilliant way I might add (as oppose to the latest seasons, which have been heavily influenced by fish rotting on the window sill), as well as Family Guy, which succeeded in making something funny once in a while. It's no wonder they inspired animated shows though, as they were probably the first and best people to ever make a "real life animated show", ignoring the limits of the medium.
matt linthicum also the Penguin on the TV sketch. “Lions don’t molt!” “Ah, but penguins do, there I’ve run rings round you logically.” “Oooh, intercourse the penguin!”
Even by Monty Python standards, this sketch is just off the charts insane.
I was about to post almost exactly, word-for-word exactly what you wrote here. Well done!
A masterpiece!
And to think Monty Python accomplished this level of film editing in the ‘70s, before computers were popular.
Ah, the original cat video.
"If only more people would call in the nick of time!"
My cat had a squirrel two feet away from him today, while I was sitting with him in the backyard. He literally just stared at the squirrel and didn't do a THING! I think he needs to be confused.
+Hannah Kent maybe you should... bring out.... THE FUNNY THINGS!!!
It was rather eerie, as I read "I think he needs to be confused" I distinctly heard it in Graham Chapman's voice! HE'S HAUNTING MY HEAD!!!!
We once had a Belgian attack bunny that used to relentlessly attack our cat Misty in the TV room. Bit like Monty Python And The Holy Grail.
I love Graham's authoritative declarations. It's why he was so great as King Arthur.
I am Arthur, King of the Britons!
+paul comerford Well I didn't vote for you.
He was an embodiment of that successful section of British comedy which brilliantly clashed normalcy and authority with utter insanity.
I want to hire Distract-A-Bee
Your cat is suffering from what we Vets have'nt found a word for.........Gotta to admire his honesty.
I think its catatonic
Dystopia
What does Gotta to admire mean? It means you are a Mongoloid!!
The first time I saw this I was a teenager. My Dad and I were watching and couldn't catch our breath because we were laughing so hard. Now I'm 58, watched it again, and almost died laughing! It's such a bizarre premise for a comedy skit.
Can't help but think the thought process was "Hey you know those cartoons gilliam does? Let's make a life action one"
The best part is that they're so damn elaborate, everything is so over the top & fantastic. That stage... I would have loved to sit in on their brainstorming sessions.
"Are you at your.... wit's end?!"
This is hilarious in the typically British sort of way... Not everyone's brand of humor. I LOVE IT.
And none of them had any idea they were making history, and changing comedy as we know it for all time...remarkable.
There is only one word to describe this sketch: bonkers. Yet still so darn hilarious! The pythons were (and some still are) comedy loonies who rewrote comedy for good. RIP Graham Chapman. You will always be remembered as hilarious.
i have drawn great inspiration from this how i treat my cats..
i frequently confuse my cats a lot...
The penguin on a pogo stick causes me to laugh uncontrollably every time.
Great stuff! My wife and I have "adopted" the neighborhood cats, so maybe we can hire these guys......we have a couple that act just like this one.
Palin's henpecked husband is hysterical with Jones shushing him at every turn. LMAO!
I love the penguin on the Pogo-stick! XD
I love Chapmans intensity when he drops the line "Yes. Well I think I can definitely say that your cat badly needs to be confused". Priceless.
So, this skit apparently single handedly spawned forth Jackson Galaxy the cat whisperer from "My Cat From Hell" as well as "America's Got Talent"
Lovely.
This confused everyone not just the cat
+Mitzi the evil ferret - I think Donald Trump stole their techniques.
+Tony Martin He's busy confusing the ginger cat that's become complacent on his head.
You are, IMO, 100% correct. I've loved this sketch since i was 7. It brought me political enlightenment as to how things work in the world. :)
I dunno about confusing the cat, but they did a hell of a great job confusing me.
I love how John always says the first words in a sentence, pauses for about two seconds, then yells the last word. He does it all the time, not just in this.
"wha-?"
"ssshht! what?"
oh man.... xD
If only more people would call in the nick of time!
Graham is one fantastic actor, so hilariously funny.
that, silly walks, and spanish inquisition were allways my favorite sketchs! long live monty python!!
I love Monty Python! They gave the way for the next best show ever.. Mr. Show!
I used to confuse my friends cat for fun before I even heard of this sketch
we thought it was hilarious, and then I heard about this sketch about a week later
weird
Hilarious man!!!
I've been subbed for a few years now I think, definitely been watching your vids for that long, so weird to see this here from when you were probably younger than I am now
If only more people would call in the nick of time!
The funniest thing is the names of the other companies roller over his picture.
I'm pretty confused. I must be a cat.
Definently one of their more underrated sketches...no confusion there!
Proof that Monty Python invented the TH-cam poop before the Internet even existed :P
One of my favorite sketches of Monty Python - maybe even my most favorite - I love Graham in this :-D
I love Graham Chapman when he's acting noble and heroic* ... long live Graham Chapman !!!
*Especially as King Arthur
I showed this to a friend who'd never seen any Monty Python before and I think he had a religious experience.
I wish i had a cat,only to confuse it like that.It's my life's long dream,to learn how to confuse-a-cat!
Graham Chapman is brilliant in this sketch!
And that cat is really cute.
Lol...my 4 year old just watched this in awe and asked me "Why is that man (John Cleese) such a good guy???"
I had my cat sitting with me through this video. I think I was more confused then she was... XD
This is my second favorite Monty Python sketch hahaha!
that bit at the end when they played with the film was brilliant... loved it..
Monty pythin is always gonna be at the top of comedians the ones today arnt as good........ not even close Monty python FOREVER
My personally favourite part of this whole sketch is the drill they perform. A very proper elbow dressing (as per British drill)
This and the cycling tour
I really love it. I want to express this atmosphere by myself.
This sketch I cannot even. XD
Hysterical - and I probably haven't seen this sketch for 50 years.
such a well-thought-out and sophisticated business concept!
would love to see the "distract a bee" cooperation operate.
Then you need: Eric the 'af a bee.
This was the first Python sketch I ever saw. I went to school the next day and a few of us started talking about it. After that we never talked about anything else!
Graham Yearley Me too and iirc it wasn't on the actual show itself that I saw it, I think this sketch was shown by viewer request on Points Of View on BBC1, anyway I was hooked.too.
the Monty Python crew are, without a doubt, the most stunning transvestites in TV history
I once showed this to my cat, he sure needed to be confused.
Thank you Confuse-a-cat! :D
Thaaaat...would confuse anyone.
Monty Python is a random silliness most of the time. It's an acquired taste :)
Imagine describing this sketch to a blind person.
Wait for it!!
Seriously though, this is comedic brilliance. 7:03 of non stop superb gags
Oh man... one of my fav Python episodes ever!
This is MP at it's absolute prime - this is just perfect.
I have to say that it becomes more difficult with each attempt as the cat becomes more jaded with age. One could risk injury -- about which the cat cares not, unless it's amusing.
+Wal Ford - It's why you need to consult a professional, never attempt to do this at home.
- Are you at your wits' end?
- Definitely, SHHH, yes.
HAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAH HILARIOUS
Favourite Monty Python Sketch
This was the very first Monty Python's Flying Circus sketch I ever saw!
pure genius
Shhh!!
Absolutely brilliant!
I love how it's got its ears to the sides, sfar s I know that means it's actually confused :D Like a dog tilting its head. Attention has been paid to every detail! .3.
This in my opinion is the best Monty Python skit ever!
Brilliant!
I think this is one of the best
And I'm not even a cat person
I want to thank Monty Python for making sketches of such educational brilliance, it could even count as revision for me! (i'm a vet student!)
I agree, I think this is definately one of their best sketches.
love the drill skits, reminds me of my time in the army
I love Monty Python (I'm weird) this is one of my fave skits!
Greatest sketch of all time.
Man, this is a classic sketch. I saw this on MTV years ago.
Arguably the best idea they ever had, which is saying something.
One of my all time favorites, coupled with "If only more people would call in the nick of time!" xD
he's brilliant in every sketch
love 'im
One of my favorite episodes!
108 people badly need to be confused
"Your cat is suffering from what we vets haven't found a word for."
THis sketch is ledgendary in my family.
Beyond any doubt, this is The greatest humor possible!
I was confused by a vet doing house calls ...
I think this is the most surreal MPFS sketch Ive ever seen.
excellent!
we saw this the other night.... i am in love with confuse a cat
Just watching everything they did, you can see how all these cartoons and comedies base their jokes on python sketches. South park was majorly influenced by them, a lot by the way of how monty pythons sketches were so far fetched and fictitious, Cant have a favourite monty python, but i really do miss Graham!
Unlike South Park though, Monthy Python could be funny without constant slang / dirty talk and endless amount of body jokes.
***** if you feel thats as far as south parks comedy extends then im afraid you simply havent watched enough of it to have an informed opinion
The first seasons of The Simpsons is also heavily influenced by Monthy Python, in a brilliant way I might add (as oppose to the latest seasons, which have been heavily influenced by fish rotting on the window sill), as well as Family Guy, which succeeded in making something funny once in a while. aaah the soldier is regularly a different person, how confusing too, and they're not wearing the same pants, this is amazingly done
I tested this out on my cat. and the cat moved!
You brought out the funny things?
Ah, there will never be another show quite like Monty Python's Flying Circus.
The cat is just lion around
That pun was less than purrfect
If ever Bethesda were to make a Fallout game set across the pond, I expect to see a reference to this skit.
flying bananas can't talk...
matt linthicum also the Penguin on the TV sketch.
“Lions don’t molt!”
“Ah, but penguins do, there I’ve run rings round you logically.”
“Oooh, intercourse the penguin!”
I did see a case of a confused tiger. Called The Life Of Pi. Beauty.
Hahaha. Monty Python is the golden times of comedy.
monthy python is genious.
the job is done!
Best magic show ever.
"Your cat is suffering from a word that we vets haven't found a name for." LOL, Monty Python is awesome!
weee, pogo sticks, i remember them...

I found the answer to my problem. I need to call in "Disgust-a-Dog".

Dear Diary, today I found out I was a cat.
