    This is really fantastic, you explain things very well and the lack of a need to impress like all those "guru" vocal coaches on youtube really helps cut to the chase.
    I think a breathe support video explaining the basics of appoggio/breathe control would be very helpful paired with this video.
    Thanks again

    Hey man, I just recently figured out head voice and I love how true it is when you get that breakthrough and you really learn what you're doing the next day you really do go up 4 notes. I'm not trying to form my head voice but this tutorial is really good, I'll recommend this to one of my friends trying to learn head voice

    Mate, thanks so much. This is the first practical video I've seen demonstrate the difference between head and falsetto. I've been going from chest up to head voice which, now I know, was often falsetto, for some reason I believed that falsetto was a higher pitch than head voice. Now it all makes sense. Great stuff.

    Thanks! I can tell you that their high screams are definitely the same technique I explain in my 'high screams' screaming lesson video. Some of their low screams are the low screams I show in my 'low screams' videos. They definitely do mix in some other kinds of screams though, such as the 'Lamb of God' scream, which I have never been able to figure out haha.
    So for the most part, just regular high screams, and regular growl low screams.

    Its pretty tricky to get the quiet rasp. I'd recommend getting warmed up fully, practice loud rasp for a while, and then get some kind of rasp exercise or part from a song, and continually make it quieter and quieter with the rasp until its at the level you want.
    It takes so much more control to do soft rasp stuff, but it is the same technique. One thing that people often do, is adding too much rasp when they don't really need it.

    I'm guessing that you're a bass or a baritone, and that vocal crack is your falsetto/head voice vocal crack? If that is the case, then these exercises will help with that. The lip bubble slides through that area, the falsetto slides through that area, and then the full voice slides through that area.
    Just go very slow when you get around your cracking area, and keep the tone very pure (not breathy). This should help. If you still have issues lemme know.

    Appreciate your video. Any tips on preventing "too breathy?" You said to not have that. But as a person with two vocal cord surgeries under my belt (2008 and 2013) and an inconsistent "quality" most days (which makes me depressed as hell), any tips to get more of a pure tone? I know how to use breath support, and all the other stuff. I can sing, but 80% of the time, my head voice is non-existent. Some days, it's amazing. And nothing really changes, sleep/water/diet-wise. I need help building my head voice back up. So if you can provide good tips/exercises/vowels that strengthen the falsetto and head voice, AND anything else, that'd be great. Even my lip trills are too breathy, and I can only reach C above middle C, most days. I used to be able to chirp a lip trill well into whistle register. And some days I still can. I don't know what's wrong. Help! Thank you! :)

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Its hard to explain really. If you purposefully make a breathy note, and then try to make it less breathy, you'll feel how your throat moves to make that happen. Then you just have to pay attention to that when you're singing. One technique is to practice lip bubbles since if they're too breathy they don't sustain well (those things where you flap your lips while singing a note, they're pretty popular of an exercise). I think some people have done things where they do notes through a straw in their lips to control breath, but i've never done that.

      @@AndrewSouthworth I don't know if you read my comment or not... I did mention I did lip bubbles (lip trills). I can sing. But for the past few months... I have no head voice or falsetto. Just air. Even if I force it, only air comes out. I've been able to sing for over 15 years. I'm looking for any exercises that can fix the air basically E above middle C and up. Normally I can easily sing that. If you can suggest anything, and I mean ANYTHING helpful, I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you sir!

      You are probably using too much your throat to sing ! You are straining your throat, try to learn how to use your diaphragm. Because that happened to me too.
      If it's not bother,
      Can you rate my videos?
      Thank you!

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends what you mean by longer. Its completely normal for your voice to get tired, especially when learning. If you're singing out of your comfort zone for 40 minutes, and your highest note in lipbubbles drops by a few notes, thats normal. When you lift weights at the gym, you have to take breaks in between sets to be able to bang out enough reps each time. Its the same with singing, you just get tired.
      However if its in your comfort zone, its only like 10 minutes of exercises and you're dropping down half an octave in your lipbubbleds, you're probably straining too hard in some aspect.

    Please, answer to me when possible, but answer please :)
    Well... I'm going to explain my problem in blending chest and head voice with lip bubbles.
    I've got two different voices:
    -The speaking voice, which resonates in my chest and it's full, loud, and my higher note in that voice is E4 (pushing up my voice and straining). If I try to hit F4, the sound just doesn't come out, and the only thing I can hear is air.
    -The high one, which is light, angelic and not breathy, it's even resonant and loud too, not as loud as my chest voice, but it's loud. I can go from G4 to C6. When singing G4-A4-B4-C5 and D5 I feel my mouth buzzing. G4 has got a big vibration in my mouth, and the higher I go, vibrations goes up through my head and each note has got less vibration in my mouth (A4 is less vibrant than G4, B4 is less vibrant than A4...), and when I hit E5 the vibration just disappear and the following notes don't resonate in anywhere. I don't know if it's head voice or falsetto. I can only tell that it's not breathy, it's loud and powerful.
    Well, then I say: "I'll start doing lip bubbles from my chest voice" and I go C4, D4, E4... and the F4 doesn't come out, so I say "okay, let's start from the high voice" and I go G5, F5, E5, D5, C5 (I start feeling my mouth buzzing) B4, A4, G4 (at this point my mouth is buzzing a lot) but, when I want to hit F4... then it jumps from F4 to E3!! It jumps an octave into my chest voice!!
    So, if I can't start from chest voice, but I can't start from the high voice... how can I do lip bubbles then???
    Please, help me with this :( I'm 15 years old I don't know if that's important but it's for you to know please help :(

      maybe i understood you wrong, but i think thats with my voice too.. when im on chest voice (my hyghtest is D4) and i want to switch to my "head voice" (i still dont know if im singing falsetto or head voice) my voice just jumps up an octave to D5..instead of D4 (actually E5-E4 because i m singing the notes higther and higter) ....its the same if i start with my "head voice".. when i reach D5 and i want to switch to my chest voice it jumps down to D4... Or even when i go down to D3 "head voice : and i wanna switch to chest voice it jump down to D2.... even then i can sing the D3 chest voice... im confused really..

    Hi Andrew, thanks for sharing this information! I'm a bit confused about what you said about support: my singing teacher told me to take great care not to flex the abs but only to move your diaphragm downwards. Doing that, the belly gets harder, but not as hard as when you flex your abs. Also, moving the diaphragm makes the belly bigger, tensing the abs makes it rather smaller. Is that making sense and would you agree with that?

    • @elvisosmanovic4846

      Let me explain. Head voice is essentially the falsetto. Falsetto is a defensive mechanism of the body that opens up the vocal folds so you wouldnt wreck them when you are trying to shout. BUT because we speak in chest voice all our lives those muscles are developed we can sustain a high energy strong voice in our low and mid range. So if you wanna extend your range you need to learn how to strenghten the muscles that are involved with vocal fold adduction.
      In other words, you need to strenghten the muscles in your falsetto to close the folds and produce a full sound. This takes time to do.
      Google the terms Twang, Compression, Vocal Fold adduction and try to get as much out of it as you can

  • @neaddra
    @neaddra 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a question. In 3:00 you said we should go up and down in octaves, starting from C, then going up to C# etc. Well, when should I stop going up? it gets really dificult when I start from middle C.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For example you would start at C, and go up an octave to C. Then go up to C# and slide up to the next C#. You basically stop when you can't hit the notes, or hit them in a manner that sounds good. If you get to a point where it sounds like crap, keep working around that range until you get it to sound good, then work up on a note by note basis.

    • @neaddra
      @neaddra 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      One more question. Should I go up one octave from G4 even if I have to strain my voice? should I try it anyway? Some other classes I saw in youtube said that I should avoid straining my voice at all costs, but I have always strained, never had any problems.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gabriel Andrade
      Just don't make a habit of straining. It won't hurt to do it every so often to push yourself or hit a note at a show or band practice, but 95+ percent of your singing should be strain free.

  • @MisterJimLee
    @MisterJimLee 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok so by learning how to transition into falsetto from chest voice naturally is the way to getting head voice? That always seemed counter-intuitive to me, I thought that my voice would learn to naturally go into falsetto instead of head voice, although I suppose it makes sense that learning control instead of trying to dive into it would help... hm... please respond, cracking and lack of head voice is the main insecurity I have with singing.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing that you learn by doing that exercise, is that falsetto and head voice are very similar things. Falsetto is technically head voice, it just has less vocal cord closure, so it sounds breathier.
      A lot of people have trouble singing in head voice because they try to make it feel like singing in chest voice, and it doesn't. It feels kind of like singing in falsetto, just with less air passing through the vocal cords.
      So learning how to transition from chest to falsetto without any cracks, will teach you the proper way to do falsetto, what head voice feels like, and how to transition. When you get to doing vocal sirens in full voice, applying the techniques from the falsetto exercise will help.

    • @MisterJimLee
      @MisterJimLee 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** So would it be correct to say that head voice and falsetto are on a spectrum and can be mixed together? And by learning how to do falsetto properly you can eventually learn how to strengthen falsetto into head voice?
      Or is it more that they are two strictly defined processes and don't blend into each other, but learning how to do one will improve your chances of finding/figuring out the other because you won't try to use as much chest voice?

    • @MisterJimLee
      @MisterJimLee 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      alejandrothefader Well I wouldn't say that applying pressure is really correct; falsetto is caused by putting too much pressure on the vocal cords and they are forced apart, not vibrating correctly and being disconnected.
      Also, you can have a strong falsetto, some people have very strong falsettos, but nonetheless it is still falsetto. Unless they have found their head voice by becoming more experienced with their falsettos (which is what Andrew is teaching in this video), they still might not be singing in full voice.

      No offense or disrespect intended what you saying is illogical . quite logically all men abilities are different our vocal cords and larynx are shaped different that's why we have tenors baritones and basses and very rare tenor altino (true Countertenors) these are even the rarest they have androgynous timbre of a man and woman and can naturally sound like a man or female before and after puberty because if Timbre not pitch and the gut in the video is either and Leggerio tenor or lyric tenor they can go to Over C5 some to even C6 or D6 .

    • @petestranger4460
      @petestranger4460 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah man, i have a lower pitched voice to.
      The thing is, if you're straining, your not using head. Head voice should feel the same as the falsetto feels. And should sound VERY similar. Pavarotti took yeaaaaaaars to sound the way he sounded on the Nessun Dorma's B4. So to hit head voice notes really loud, clear and "beefy" it takes time. Because you need to build that. So try to get'em lighter without straining.
      Do the lipbubbles Andrew showed in the videos :)
