My favorite body has a similar problem and I've had it for almost 72 years. You never pay as much attention to a neck until it is damaged. I just wish a luthier could repair mine, but the damaged parts are made of bone. Cheers to your luthier who did a magnificent job! Nuno excites those romantic European bots who base their judgement of music in Eurovision. I’m sorry but there’s no other way to put that. It’s true and I know not why it’s a phenomenon.
Nuno is more rhythmic, energetic. Chris’s playing is more ‘romantic’ or ‘poetic’ and subtle. Both are great artists, just different. And like it or not, looks are important. Nuno looks more flashy, oozing a rockstar vibe so his music/playing will always be more noticeable/popular.
All of his solo's are "stunning and powerful" you will be very hard pressed to find one that is not.😁 I have been playing since i was 15 and am 59 now and Chris is my favorite player for the reasons you listed as well as he is not a shred freak. He plays fast only when it fits the structure of the solo/song. Far too many play fast all the time and it is lets just say Boring and old now.
instructive. I have owned several of these and never found the neck to be good. Finally they are sleepers in my collection. Good to read that you agree. The sum of all these repair/upgrade works make me dubious that these are worth it.
I’ve heard a lot about neck breaks on Les Pauls and thought “Yeah blah blah” but I saw a nice 2003 60s reissue Classic and noticed the angle of the headstock ! Holy macaroni , danger danger ! Greco sounds great .!!
Those repairs probably cost more than the purchase price of the guitar but now it's all great again and made to fit your hands and ears and that's the most important thing :)
What a great job your guy has done for you, The repair looks invisible now, like it never happened. You have such a great sound and playing from the heart, it is obviously your strong suit. Only a handful of players are so, instantly recognizable by their technique. You are one of them.
Would you consider making a video on the difference between the finger up-rake that you and some other folks do, and the picked downstroke rake? It's a technique I'm noticing more and more and I've never really considered it over the traditional rake. I'm curious your thoughts!
Beautiful guitar! Very skilled luthier too. Not seen that shrink wrap technique before. Very clever. And those nylon nuts are nightmare to cut, but people swear by them. Some of these early Japanese lawsuit guitars are every bit as good as the real thing and the prices are beginning to reflect that, especially the early Yamahas. Interesting journey this Greco guitar has been on. Glad to see Huw's repair didn't disguise the break, but nicely incorporated the cracks into the character of the modded neck.
I'm curious of the headstock angle. I can't believe I hadn't checked before, I owned both a 81 Greco Les Paul and a 78 Greco semi hollow. That one was not a 335, looked like one but smaller and thinner. There weren't a lot, every time I tried to look on Google images for one it always brought up the very one that I owned (I could tell from marks and case), in different people's ownership. I remember the Greco Les Paul's G-string held tune just fine, which is rare for the Gibsons, and I tend to bend the G more than other strings. I know Epiphone LP hold tune just fine, but they use a a less acute angle. I was pissed when I sold the Semi hollow for $800, and found out a few months later I could have sold the pickups for $700 alone🙄. I dropped several different pickups; I had Lollars for a while, I worked in a repair shop that was a Lollar distributor and got a good deal on them, so put them in a few guitars. I ended up putting them in an ES335, they were low winds and the scooped sound did better in a semi hollow. I've had Fralin Pure PAFs that I had in a drawer for a decade and put in on a whim, and they're the best ones for the Les Paul. The Greco LP is long gone, I just said f'ck it and bought a McCarty 594 Singlecut and pulled out the 58/15LTs and put the Fralins in. I know everyone loves those pickups but they just didn't do it for me.
Took my 1980 LP Custom into the local luthier recently for some very LONG overdue TLC - one straightening of the truss rod, expensive refret, replacement saddle and new set of 9's later, it feels like a guitar transformed... 😬

Chris, this is the first video of yours I have seen. Excellent! I was victim of a neck break and the pain it caused me decades back. What is excellent is your guitar playing style, man handling your guitar like very few I have witnessed before....don’t break the neck playing, cause you know how to command great riffs like SRV with that physical style I really like. Hendrix is another one who was physical in his guitar playing!

Guess I was late to the table, but recently I discovered that brands like Greco, Tokai, and Burny have reached the nearly mythic status of the original actual item - even to the point where folks tread thin ice talking about modding them, and at least Tokai have launched multi-tier quality instruments being made from Japan to Korea to China.
While I’ve never played an original 50’s burst, I’ve owned a couple of Gibson LP Classics and SGs, and currently own a 1981 Tokai Love Rock, and the Tokai is every bit as good if not better than the Gibsons. The craftsmanship of the Tokai is on point.

I just bought another LP, a 1992 (non weight relieved) Classic Plus. and the seller showed me a photo of his scale which showed 8-1/2lbs. Well, it showed up and USPS weighed it for me and it actually weighs 9lb-12oz 😮😢I kept it and I’m doing everything to it including putting late 1960 T-Tops with 50’s wiring. Thank you so much!
I got a 79 japanese "LP" , branded 'Eagle' (was a distributor name). Almost mint in (dignified cardboard) OHSC. Very nice fit and finish, superb luthery apart... A bolt on neck ! (like most of the praised "lawsuit" Ibanez..). It's more a plain top but with a very nice sunburst. Fun fact: the pick up were super weak fake humbuckers (single coil under the metal covers). .. I put Gibson pups (500t/496r... almost vintage correct !) instead and redid the whole circuit. Et voila ! a really nice LP, quite convincing cosmetically (unless you look at the heel) and sonicaly.
Probably less sustain...Not like the sustain being gone but less sustain... Also, the guitar would be harder to intonate and the string tension a bit too slinky especially because of the guitar's shorter 24.75" scale length... Even if it wasn't exactly the same thing back then, the 1952 Les were built with a shallow neck angle which caused lots of similar issues...
Eh, "Greco" 😅 but it goes to show how this, Tokai, and I guess Burny have reached equal - and in some cases - higher status than the original actual item.
I own 2 Japanese Les Paul guitars. A 1980 Aria Pro II and an @1983 Memphis. First thing I did was refret them and for the money they are as good as Gibson for 1/10 the price.
I’m sure you have heard the story about Gary ROSSINGTON S 1959 LP. The headstock was broken and repaired, I assume correctly or what he liked . It’s the only guitar he ever played .. But on slide , they say and I hear it crying ….. He was very prolific as are a lot on slide …. RIP
Awesome walkthrough of these changes, Chris. Question: does keeping the rubber grommet on the strap button without the strap serve any functional purpose for you? Or is it just to keep you from losing it?
@@flintdavis2 yea, maybe he keeps a pick there or something. I have the same rubber grommets and when I take a strap off I don’t put them back on. So just curious as to whether they do anything for him.
Hey Ramiro. No, no real function - I just lose them if I try and transfer them from guitar to guitar so it's easier to have a set on all the guitars I use frequently! :)
One of my LP's I've broke the neck 4 times, with at least one before I got it, 2 of those breaks are from the original repair(s) being garbage, the last 2 are for sure from my abuse, I play hard and sometimes I used to follow it through drum sets, crowds, half stacks etc... S happens. (to be fair at the time no one cared about mid 70's LP's no one being aware of the rarity of 74' factory standards... oops, but I'll never sell it so quit worrying right) after the last repair, its rock solid and hold tune for weeks.
Mr Buck, you should try a set of Seymour Duncan Green Magic pickups in that guitar. I put a set in my Gibson Custom Shop Green Lemon Fade 59 and they’re incredible. The guitar was a monster to begin with and the out of phase on the middle setting is as close to the Peter Green tone as I’ve ever heard. Definitely worth it!
I'm original owner of an 83 gibson LP custom. Sadly for most I'm a lefty. Humbly I find it the best of the best. It has a pair of tim shaw pafs. Check him out if u don't know. It's a red 3tone burst. The 7way adjustable bridge and the flip open gold tuners. Humble brag again best yr ever. Maybe a future video..
Unfair comparison perhaps. But it's still true that the custom shop Gibsons are the only big name guitars you can compare higher end Japanese Les Pauls to.

I bought 2 Les Pauls with headstock breaks years ago. Still have both. Beat the snot out of them and they are still solid. Never an issue for me.

I just got my 50 Gold top back from getting the neck reprofiled early 60"S. WOW , i love it so much more!

The volute seems have diminished somewhat after the re-carve. That’s a bit of a worry.

Ah, I'm currently on the hunt for a Greco, but my main issue is that I can't figure out which models had nitro finishes out of the many amazing models pre 1985.
I fix boats with West System epoxy products. Never thought of using it on guitars, but that makes a lot of sense.
