How We Do It - Grooming Van Build Part 1 - Inverter Electrical System

  • Sherry has equipment that needs reliable AC power. Plugging into a customer's home outlet is not always possible and a generator is loud.
This lead us to look at using an inverter and a battery bank.
This video is about what is working and how this design grew out of what we tried.
The design of the system is based on a battery bank of 6 6-volt deep cycle golf cart batteries. These are connected in a series parallel design, to produce 12 volts and over 600 amp hours of power. This may sound like a lot but it is just enough for some grooming jobs.
The battery bank is connected to a 3000 watt modified sine wave inverter. This provides most of the AC power to the grooming salon.
The power comes from the inverter and to a circuit breaker panel to distribute to the devices in the mobile salon. Including the florescent lights, the high velocity dryer, the shop vacuum, the power strip for clippers and the recirculating pump for the grooming tub.
Of these the HV dryer uses the most power. The HV dryer helped to identify the week points to the system.
While the recommendations of several web sites said that 1-0 cable would handle the load of 3000 watts I found that I needed to double this to get enough power to the inverter from the batteries. What would happen is the inverter would see a power requirement from the HV dryer and the batteries would have the power but it was not getting to the inverter, and it would alarm a low power condition and shut down.
The thicker 2-0 cable helped, but the next thing needed to complete the system was a battery charger and that helped even more.
Having full charge on the battery bank is more important than one might think. To provide charging to the batteries, I set up a connection to the alternator of the van, to charge while driving. However this is not enough to keep a bank of batteries conditioned to a full charge. It was only after adding a 50 amp AC to DC converter charger, that we would get a full charge on these batteries. It has the added benefit of providing additional power when it is plugged in while using the HV dryer.

These videos are CRAZY helpful only thing like this out there. How do u keep ur van insulated

Still working on that, the van has some insulation from the factory, but not as much as is needed. We are thinking about a layer of foam on walls and ceilings and then cover it with FRP. But we haven't decided yet.

sherry i loved your video! thank you for sharing. i live in mo and have a brick and mortar business that inwant to downsize and switch over to mobile grooming. i have questions about the whole process. like when you get to the house do you go to the door or does the. customer come to your mobile service vehicle? do you ever go to a large parking lot and have customers drive to you. im thinking like a walmart parking lot or similar. i just have crazy questions like that.

On parking lots the only time I am in a parking lot is when I groom a business owners dog , I can plug in if need be, so I play that by ear lol

Hello, I am trying to get into the mobile grooming business. Can you please tell me an estimate on how much a renovation would cost?

To give a single number for the cost to us to build Sherry's van is not going to give you the cost you will pay. After saying that here are some of the things we bought and the price we paid, I will try to give time estimates for how long it took to engineer and to put it together.
The van, used $2500, several months search
The inverter electrical system, $1000, 15 hrs
      The generator, $700, 10 hrs
Plumbing system including pumps, $250, 10 hrs
Water tanks, free scrap drums, I know what was in these drums before we used them so I know they were safe, new tanks are several hundred dollars
Bathing tub, about $100, this was made from scrap steel hardie board and FRP panels, 20 hrs
Grooming table, free trash find and some scrap metal, 15 hrs
Misc shelves cabinets and other additions, $200 mostly scrap materials repurposed, 100 hrs

      AC, $400, 5 hrs
The list can go on and on, with replacement parts for the van, maintenance, test projects that didn't work the way I wanted, etc...
If a single price had to be given, we insured it for $13000. To make sure we would have enough to build another one if it was totaled.

@@HowWeDoIt_HowTo That is good to know. What is a good sized vehicle that would be ideal?

Your questions are very good. I think the best way to answer them is with a video, we will be doing this video this month. If you have more questions feel free to comment.
