I watched his show when I was growing up. Actually met him in the lobby of the Las Vegas Hilton. I was in the Navy in the early 60's. He stopped and greeted me and thanked me for my service.
I watched these programs as a child and teenager 65+ years ago! Liberace inspired me to play piano. He made it look like a lot of fun and so easy!! I had his 12th Street Rag/ Beer Barrel Polka/Boogie Woogie arrangements and practiced for hours but they were way beyond my ability!! I always thought they were speeded up on the recordings but saw him in person and was stunned to realize he actually played them that fast and accurately!!
Liberace said he practiced 8 hours a day. From little up. Kids learn fast. He spent a lot of time with the piano and knew it inside and out .. plus his parents were musicians .. God gave him time to practice and people around him who could teach him.. he said that his teacher put little weights on his fingers when he played.. then when the weights came off, he said his fingers went wild and fast.!!
These were a huge hit in the day. You're right -- besides his skills as a pianist Liberace could really connect with any audience because of his charm. He was so disarmingly gracious without being obsequious.
I'm in Ireland watching this. It is the 13 th November 2019. I'm enchanted by Liberace 's beauty and playing. I'm 45 so only recall him when he was in his 60s. He wasn't in great health those days. I was 10 in 1983. I didn't realise that he had his own TV show too.
I watched this in the mornings as a child. I loved him so, and I saw him in concert when I was really young. My first concert! I was young enough to be fascinated that I could see someone in person that I watched on our little black and white tv.

Well, perhaps Liberace is no Tchaikovsky, Mozart, or Bethoven, but to me, he certainly is one of the greatest musicians in history. Oh, by the way, it's interesting to see Liberace, in his early days, not extravagantly dressed !
Liberace himself said that he was not great. He admitted that there were others who played better than him. But he did have a charm that was off the charts. His stage presence, manner of presenting his music and pleasing his audience made him very popular back in the 1950's when he had this show.

That may be true but, in all fairness, Liberace deprived us of the chance to see him as a full-time classical performer. His fame didn't rest on the classical repertory, so in this sense, he wasn't one of the great _classical_ musicians. However, from what I read about him and what I can deduce by watching him play, he had excellent professional training, fluent technique, a fine touch, a singing tone and all the usual equipment of a serious musician. His approach is decidedly that of a classical pianist, not a jazz one. Wikipedia tells us he had "strong" reviews about his performance of the Second Piano Concerto by Liszt. I think, in an alternative reality, Liberace could've been a touring virtuoso. He had all the necessary components.

Same here! I was amazed to hear that not only cam he sing, but that he’s a wonderful singer with a great voice! Much better than many others who are known for being singers alone! And such a surprisingly deep and rich singing voice, given his rather high and nasal speaking voice!
Loved his theme song played in the beginning I watched him as a little girl also did any of u see the only movie he made called Sincerely Yours Wasn’t a big hit but his playing was wonderful I loved him as a concert pianist he didn’t need all the fake glitz of Las Vegas his talent was enough sorry jus my opinion granted he was accessible to more people in Vegas tho 9:54

I'm a classical pianist myself but I'm not a condescending turkeycock pretending he partakes in the elite club. I have to say this to all somber classical Art lovers: such people as Liberace and Victor Borge are our allies. They're agents of the Classical Art because they attract the masses by breaking stereotypes about it. They make accessible of something that a layman perceives as boring. By being pretentious and crude, you achieve nothing. Your type repulses people. Liberace and Borge bring them in.
