  • If you’re interested in podcasting or streaming but something like the Rodecaster Pro feels like more than you need while basic interfaces don’t have allthe features you’d like, the Focusrite Vocaster Two might the be perfect option.
    This video takes a look at this super cool audio interface that’s right in the perfect “Goldilocks zone” between basic and complex devices.
    This video is not sponsored, but Focusrite did send me the Vocaster to check out. I’m not obligated to make a video or say anything specific about it. I just think it’s super neat!
    As much as it simplifies things when I'm able to just buy everything myself, it wouldn't be possible to learn about or cover everything I want to cover on my channel without help from people like Focusrite who help provide access to equipment with no expectations in return.

    It amazes me each time how considerate you are towards people watching your videos, knowing we are on different levels of knowledge and needs. Could be your teacher background but you never miss this aspect, big kudos! Btw, I've just warned "Thiscord" that they've been misspelling their app's name this whole time. They never learn, do they 🙂?

      Thanks Mac! I always think that context is super important with these things. I see a lot of reviews and get a lot of messages where someone dismisses something because it doesn't work in one very specific scenario, forgetting that there are a million other uses cases where it might be perfect.
      Plus it's always great when something helps make things more accessible to people!

    Tom, you’re a life saver. I trashed an interview on Ecamm because I didn’t have the loop back set properly. That opens up A LOT with this device. I’m not somebody that needs all the bells and whistles from the RCP2, so I went with this thing. It’s amazing with Ecamm live now.

    Thanks for the great video as always -- you inspired me to buy it, so here are some updates: In the latest (v1.30) version of the Hub software, you can now tweak the Enhancements by moving the sliders for Compression, or for the Bass, Mid or Treble bands. (You can't Save your custom adjustments with a new name, but they will be remembered -- and then you can reset everything to defaults, in the hamburger settings.) Also under the hamburger menu, you now have several options for how the Auto Gain will work: Default, Stream, or Camera, each targeting a different level.

    • @danmagoo

      Another update: Vocaster Two is now $150 - half the original price. For the past year I have found Vocaster One the "goldilocks" solution, as you put it. Now, for the extra inputs including Bluetooth, the upgrade for me is a no-brainer. I will be using your video to finally figure out customizing Loopback -- thanks again.

    Hi Tom, I ended up picking up the Vocaster One to replace my Elgato Wave XLR. I do need to spend more time with it, but for what short time I have spent using it, the Vocaster One is an awesome device. Out of the box, the Vocaster One does a wonderful job with sound via the headphone jack. Makes me wonder if there is a built in DAC of some sort because the sound is amazing! Thanks for all of your hard work! Love your reviews and view points!!

    Messed around with a few different mixer interfaces, and they are definitely overkill for what I need them to do. For radio voice-tracking & commercial production, THIS THING ROCKS. Makes it easy to dial in the sound, cutting back in my post-prod time. The price is more than fair for what it does. I just hope Focusrite has success with the Vocaster & continues to support it.

    Great video! I've been curious about the Vocaster, although I don't really have a use for it. I like that Focusrite has the "Vocaster Studio" bundles that come with mics (a handheld dynamic for the Vocaster One and a broadcast style dynamic for the Vocaster Two). It's something I'll be definitely pointing people toward when they ask me for advice starting a podcast.
    I do find it kind of odd that the Vocaster Two Studio bundle only comes with one mic, though. It makes sense as a cost saving thing, I suppose. But what confuses me is that the mic in the bundle doesn't seem to be available for individual sale at all. (At least, last I checked.)
    So basically people buying the Vocaster Two Studio Bundle who want a second mic for their setup for the guest input won't be able to get the same mic they have in the bundle. Which seems counterintuitive for a bunch of reasons.
    Edited to add: The Vocaster broadcast dynamic mic that comes with the Vocaster Two studio bundle is now available to buy individually (or bundled with the Vocaster headphones).

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I saw that there were a lot of different bundles. Definitely strange that the Two doesn't come with TWO mics 🤔

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, they're both great in terms of audio quality. If you need on-board recording or more than two channels, then the P4 is the way to go. If you just need a super clean interface and/or you plan to run the audio directly into a camera, then the Vocaster is the winner.

    I have Vocaster Two and have been using it for about a week. I have the Shure SM7B and I think it drives the microphone very well. I didn't hear the noise difference between the plain Vocaster Two and then the additional FetHead. On TH-cam and using a headphone connected and listening closely I couldn't tell a bit of difference. Your sample was very short so it was difficult. I think it sounded dramatic to you at the time. I have had a similar experience but it is the headphone jack/amp that is introducing the noise to my listening experience. The recordings I create in Audition exhibit a very low noise level. I doubt the Fethead would make a difference in the recorded noise level, and I doubt if it did it would be significant and worth the money. Of course, I don't have a Fathead so I can't test it.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it’s also a good example of TH-cam compression too- what I was hearing in my headphones probably isn’t exactly what everyone watching the video is going to hear. But that might be a good thing. Most hosting platforms will mess with the audio a bit, so the minor details tend to disappear.

    Hey, first video I have watched of yours and it was really helpful. I ended up getting both the SM7B & Vocaster. I have a (silly) question. I am trying to use it in a voice over setting through Logic Pro X or Adobe Audition. If I set the enhanced feature in the Vocaster Hub, does this effect transfer into the software?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's a great question! The effect will only affect the way the mic sounds in your recording, but it won't change any of the actual software settings in Logic or Audition.
      If you're working in either of those programs, it might be worth leaving the mic as "neutral" as possible and then adding in your adjustments/creating presets in whichever app you're using.

  • @knightmare1015

    I've got the Vocaster One and it's awesome, however the volume levels aren't very good. It's usually not loud enough and if you go to turn up the volume, it messes up the autogain feature and causes a lot of clipping and background noise. I'm getting my best audio through the Zoom Podtrack P4 with the matching stereo headset and dynamic microphone.

    • @tombuck

      You really can't go wrong either way, to be honest. Running the Vocaster into an audio app is a great way to go. The Rodecaster's ability to record internally while adding in effects on the fly does allow for a slightly more streamlined workflow, but it essentially comes down to personal preference and budget.

    I've seen many of the reviews about this product using a smartphone for music, but can you actually bring in a phone call (such as a call-in) for a two-person podcast with one person on the XLR microphone and the other person on the phone call? Does the TRRS cable provide the capability for the person on the phone to hear you? I am surprised that not one reviewer tested this device with a phone call, especially since many solo podcasters may have a call in guest. Thanks in advance to anyone that responds.

    Hey Tom, I have a question. I produce podcasts using the rodecaster pro, however since I like some episodes to be shorter, I then use adobe audition and cut some silences using a plugin that does it, but still, it’s long, specially since my episodes are an hour long, the audience has said they love it thst way and it’s true crime and conspiracy stuff so a lot of material to cover. Do you have any advice if maybe other softwares can shorter those silences and make it faster to work? According to your experience do you know maybe the combination of a software and a hardware that could help to edit those silences faster and accurately? Thanks Tom, love your channel!

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great question! It definitely takes time to remove those silences, but I do think that the "human touch" of doing it manually will ultimately give the best results.
      If you want to try out some software though, have you ever used Descript? It's pretty awesome and quite powerful. I use it for all of my video captions, but it does have options for removing silence and filler words. It might not be perfect, but maybe it could take care of a lot of the big stuff and then you can go through and just polish things up?

      With an interface like this you'll need to run it through some type of recording software (free options like GarageBand, QuickTime, or Audacity are more than capable).
      With a mixer/interface like a Rodecaster, then you can also record internally to that device and import the audio afterwards (or use it as an interface just like the Vocaster). 👍

    I was originally planning on buying the SM7B, but after some more research, it was as you said, there's more to buy than just the mic itself. Then, I saw a few of your videos maybe few years back recommending the PodMic i'd say more than the SM7B, and now instead of the SM7B and some normal mixer, I changed plans to buying the PodMic and the Rodecaster, but I can't help but wondering, are you still using the PodMics ? I mean, in the recently uploaded videos, I see that you've been using the SM7B which If I remember correctly you didn't own in the previous years, have your preference changed ?
    Been really enjoying your videos, love how you're thoughtful to the audience, keep up the splendid productions

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a great question! The PodMic was my first "real" mic, and for $99 it's a tough one to argue against. As time went on though, I started to dislike the way it sounded on my voice specifically (leans more towards the high end and lacks some of the lows).
      What I learned is that the PodMic really does best with EQ. If you're willing to spend some time finding the perfect settings, you can get some stellar results. That being said, there are other mics out there that more easily sound great on a wide variety of voices (the SM7B being one of them).
      I'd also recommend checking out the Earthworks ETHOS and Lewitt LCT240 Pro as some other options within that price range.

    Thanks Tom,
    Vocaster Two - Audio problem - Any ideas?
    I'm using my ZV-E10 to stream to my iMac.
    For sound I use a dynamic mic going into Focusrite Vocaster Two interface going into my iMac.
    This works great EXCEPT for a vocal sync issue. I mainly use Zoom, Streamflow, and Quicktime to record.
    To solve the audio sync issue I am trying to run the audio out from the Vocaster (camera TRS output socket) directly into the mic socket on the ZV-E10.
    This is perfectly synced and crystal clear, UNTIL I connect the ZV-E10 to my iMac (via either USB or mini HDMI (via Camlink 4k)), which introduces massive noise.
    As soon as I connect the camera to the iMac, the noise starts.
    If there is not a solution, perhaps there is software that will help me solve the sync issue. I suspect that OBS or Ecamm Live have a solution. Although I'm open to that (and the learning curve) I'd rather find out what the cause of the problem is first.
    Any advice very much appreciated.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jamie!
      The easiest way to deal with sync issues is to run everything through an app like OBS or Ecamm and then add an audio delay. It's a super normal problem, so fortunately there are quite a few fixes for it. The only downside, however, is that Zoom sometimes still throws things out of sync because...it's Zoom. 😉
