Imagine holding that note as the lead and your bass is taking the FATTEST ritardando ever
Lmfao
I was singing along, and if the lead got half as annoyed as I was, I feel bad for the bass
at the end of watch?v=6-xC1HZkqcw the bass does that-purposely slowing the tempo during the high held note (prompting a deserved vulgar gesture from the lead)
Probably the funniest barbershop TH-cam comment I've seen
Can i ask what you mean exactly? What did the bass do wrong?
THAT DUDE DID NOT JUST HOLD AN A4 FOR 20 SECONDS HOLY FRICK
RIGHT?!!! TF WAS THAT HOW
@@johnlatham1287 barbershop has a lot of standard conventions, the lead holding a high note that is harmonized by the rest is how arrangements often end
No kidding!!! Did he even take a quick breath before it? It's hard to hear if he did or not...
@@djthischord8367 still impressive 👀
@@djthischord8367 thanks for the theoretical bs
That lead tenor has some seriously impressive lungs.
20 seconds of belting.
It's easier than you think
I cant fully belt it past 20 seconds, but holding a note for 20+ isnt actually too bad
In barbershop he’s a lead. Not a lead tenor. The designations are lead, baritone and bass for the four parts.
it's all about economy of breath. actually easier to hold a loud note than a softer one as more air passes through in thin folds
Can you imagine the absolute stress of being the bass at the end, having to make sure the rit is still effective while also knowing if you hold it back too much your mate passes out
It is but that just means the lead has to work on their breath support to sustain the note
😂
@@Rednaxela137 Mate you could not tell me with a straight face that if you "work on [your] breath support" you would be able to sing for 20 seconds 😂
@@milesluther1003 yes
Speaking as a Bass... He's not that concerned.
it's one thing to belt a high note for 20 seconds but a FULL CHEST HIGH A??? unfair
Well he's a tenor
Def not full voice. Very good mix.
@@Artyhull you're right, that's not full chest
@@Artyhull yeah a mix for sure. Even for a tenor an A chest is damaging over a period of time
anyone who said it's not a full chest A is a bitter baritone
The bass must've felt extremely powerful in the last two measures, with the lead's life in their hands (or vocal cords, i guess)
Lol and if he and the lead got into a fight on the day of the performance he can slow down the last two measures even more
What do you mean “their” hands? Isn’t there only one bass?
@@TheSteinbitt "they" can be third person singular!
@@SapioTV Ok, but why would you use it in this case?
@@TheSteinbitt no reason not to!
It's almost scary how similar our tastes in music are.
I had the exact same thought, the plot thickens
My recommendations for music go from Japanese fusion, 70s Psychedelic funk, 90s hip hop, obscure jazz, to old piano bar style songs and barbershop doowop. I feel the algorithm hard on this one.
@Ryandal Gilmore tfw you go into a conversation that you weren't originally in to bring a "ratio" style comment. The sheer audacity. The pure irony. It overwhelms.
I know, right? From Jacob Collier to DCI to barbershop.
George is basically just transcribing my entire music playlist.
The bass looks like he just escaped Whoville with that haircut.
LMFAOOOO
I saw them live. He often performed with fancy hair XD
The lead was immaculate but anyone love that amazingly (idk if this is the word) dissonant note the bass sang towards the end on "Notre" then sliding into the "dame" was just wonderful
The term is a passing note. They're in A which uses A, C# and E for the major triad. The bass sings the passing note E# (and I hope you appreciate this pianist's restraint in calling it an E#) for No- before returning to the triad on -tre.
@@deathbower The bass pitch on "No-" isn't at all a passing tone - to be a chromatic passing tone it would have to be preceded by F#. I would argue that's it's not a nonharmonic tone at all, that it's actually part of the harmony... and should be written as F natural, not E#.
Starting from the last chord of the third to last measure, you have G⁷ (could call it a G⁹ if you include the high pedal A). G⁷ resolving directly to A major would be quite odd, and a rather unsatisfying resolution. Moving from G⁷ to E⁷ (the V⁷ chord in the key of A) would be a change of only two notes, moving in opposing half steps (G - G#, F - E), a nontraditional but very pleasing resolution. Here the penultimate chord isn't E⁷, it's E(sus4), but it's functionally the same and provides a similar sense of resolution both coming from G⁷ and moving to A.
Instead of the G⁷ resolving directly to E(sus4), however, there is an added predominant with that bass note on "No-." It creates a really interesting chord: F - E - A - B. Note its striking similarity to the French Augmented Sixth chord in the key of A: F - D# - A - B. The harmony on "No-" is a chromatically altered Fr⁶. Thus, the final three chords are [functionally] Fr⁶ - V - I.
Sorry for my lengthy and probably overanalyzed explanation, but I'm about to graduate with a degree in composition, so I'm kinda obsessed with diving deep into music theory. I also feel like it's kind of appropriate on a channel that features Jacob Collier, the man with probably some of the wildest music theory of all time haha
*EDIT: upon a bit further reflection, it could be seen as a passing tone (again, transcribed as F not E#), going G - F - E, but the rest in between makes it too disjointed for me to hear that as a passing tone. (I would have noticed that possibility earlier if it were actually transcribed as a major 2nd instead of a diminished 3rd)
@@davem.3519 Don't apologise, that was fascinating. What I would ask you, however:
In barbershop, especially with their seventh chords, they use just intonation to make the harmonics sing. With that context, is it really okay to view E# and F as the same note?
@@deathbower When you abandon equal temperament in singing, you don't have to then maintain any particular temperament system - you can simply adjust any note up or down slightly based on its context. And there absolutely can be context that would suggest E# and F to be different pitches: if there was an E# moving to F (or vice versa). But when singing with pure intervals, even two F's don't need to be the same.
Good observation, thanks for pointing that out! 👍
Right? I got goosebumps there
I think that dissonant chord represents some impressions of medieval harmonic style , or probably even earlier one, suddenly music feels very 'religious' and quite impactful, and of course this cadence is very special and different from simple Picardy third, which is really cool
(The way three top voices hold e+b+a chord is already magical, but that F in bass is just crazy)
I almost passed out just watching that guy
wish you'd start linking the original videos in the description so they're easier to find!

Ringmasters are an amazing barbershop group, what the lead (Jakob Stenberg) is doing is called a hanger/post which is usually used at the end of barbershop arrangements which is called the tag
Edit: Something also, Jakob held another hanger a couple bars back at the false tag(which was the first chord at the start of this video), and to be able to do another one in such short time is astonishing. These guys are the 2012 International Quartet Champions so these guys are the best of the best!
Do you know where I can find an old video of them singing in a subway "where I belong"?
@@omikhlephonon Might not be the clip you're looking for but they did the "Go The Distance" tag with Tim Waurick and it's just sublime th-cam.com/video/NwbiaqLb-O4/w-d-xo.html
@@winstonp.1282 Yeah man thanks, that's it!
The thing that makes this tag even more impressive is that just as this clip starts they'd just sang a fake tag for 20 seconds or so! Jakob has a huge set of pipes on him! This piece is genuinely one of my favourite ever barbershop pieces ever and I don't think you'll find many people that disagree
The minor to major ending will always give me chills
Picardy third
I won't claim to know much music theory but it just sounds like a resolving sus2. Not a minor to Picardy third.
@@charley420 ig the descending baseline implies the minor chord.
@@nicholasgarcia2508 nah it’s not minor at all at the end.
@@nicholasgarcia2508 it’s augmented but the fifth still there😂
listen to the overtones on the final chord - there's an E and an A which can be heard fairly easily. Shows how in tune they were.
Corrections:
All the staves should be in D minor, for some reason only the lead updated :(
Not-re should be spelt No-tre
Bar 7 bass is a D
Yeah bass in bar 7 is D2. With my bass slider all the way up and perfect pitch i can safely say it is D.
Ive got a request for you, could you please transcribe this masterpiece?
I left this piece for you Arturo Sandoval
Pretty sure it's D
It's a D2 dude I have the actual sheet music
@@Jakeroo767 Is there any chance of getting it from you?
Anyone else notice the guy to the tenor's left literally holding him up so he didn't pass out from oxygen deprivation?
I love how the lead is supporting himself on the bass and the Tenor is holding his mate up "just in case". It looks like effect - we all know he was preparing in case the bass took too long ending the tune lol
the bass actually hit a D2 instead of an F2 which makes this increasingly more impressive
Strong vocals are certainly required 😂
I've listened to the whole thing so many times, and every time, without fail, this last section brings on goosebumps.
One of the best performances in the entire BHS hands down
I performed with these guys once. I was only nine at the time, but from the first time I heard them it was really obvious they were on another level. Amazing experience. Wish I'd known the opportunity I had, but sadly I only really became a fan a few years afterward.
I'll forever miss Martin (the bass); he was a great inspiration to me. Though Emanuel was probably the better coach :)
If you watch the whole song, he only had like 20 seconds to recover after the fake tag too
Absolute chills. Incredible vocalism, pristine tuning and amazing resolution. *chef’s kiss*
Not the bass looking like the kid from meet the Robinsons 😂
CHILLS. FULL BODY. EVERY TIME.
This cannot be listened to only once, this goes on repeat
So true. This is amazing
Exactly
I REALLY recommend watching the whole thing. They're incredible.
I love that gliss at the end, bass killed it
I miss Martin 😞
It makes me so happy to see that they're getting more attention!! Been a big fan of their performances!
I am so glad you found this! I have listened to this recording for hours and hours
the bass at the end is absolutely amazing, my favorite part
This has been my favortie barbershop quartet performance by my favorite quartet for a year now. I'm so glad we finally have a transcribed version of it to learn on our own!!
Oh my dear sweet lord, bless you for this!! I remember when I came across the original video of them back when and it’s still one of the most unreal, MASTERFUL, things I’ve ever come across!
0:28 man said AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and dipped
I have literally watched this video at least 15 times, it's so cool to see it written out!
Yep, probably the best arrangement/performance of any song I’ve ever heard.
Also love how the sheer power of the held note made them all explode outwards when they were done
I saw this live 6 years ago and it was absolutely AMAZING! Still one of the top performances I’ve ever been to
This is one of my favorite barbershop pieces of all time. Glad to see it getting more attention, it really deserves it
Not that I know many barbershop tunes, but I can’t imagine a more spine-tingling tag. Fantastic!
Feels like no one's talking about the FULL CHEST C#5 over on the right there
That was absolutely bonkers and I had no idea I had any interest in barber shop quartet until now.
I'd love a full transcription, Ringmasters with the original bass was my favorite quartet
The lead guy held the last note for SO LONG mad props to him!!!!
Even crazier is they did a false ending with a full tag right before this (the end of which is actually captured at the start of this video) during which the lead holds a different note for nearly as long.
Love that your getting some barbershop in here, awesome!!
Singing that baritone E at the end is like the most satisfying back scratch ever.
the slide into that last note is the reason I love barbershop
That rise to C# at the end bar was so good
That ending was breathtaking. Idk many people that could hold a note that long and powerful.
Hey George, I noticed on your transcription it says “arr. Ringmasters.” The arrangement is actually by Barbershop Legend, Aaron Dale. Just FYI!
so glad that this piece is getting attention now it’s such a good performance
is nobody gonna bring up that bit at the end with the bass? that clash then resolution with the e sharp just hits differently
So cool watching bleu orb and gc grow and collaborate together.
So fun to see the tag. Please come to the SLC Utah area again!
The resolution is so clear, it makes IMAX kneel down in respect!
you'll notice they put their arms behind the guy holding that last note in case he passed out :)
Baritone sings Notre Daom at the end

Hey this is my favourite barbershop performance ever!!! It has two iconic tags!
Dat post. Definitely the craziest part of traditional barbershop for me
You missed out on the fake tag immediately before this, which makes it even more impressive!
Gave me actual chills!
Check out Vocal Spectrum's "Aladdin Medley". That's a 30-second tag to go down in history! I'd love to see a sheet of that ending!
hearing the lead hold that a actually made me feel breathless
I love looking at barbershop quarters and trying to guess everyone’s voice part based entirely on their appearance, I’ll tell you now, I was wrong
You'd feel even better when you find out that the Lead and Tenor switched parts on this song.
i like the false tag better imo but the whole arrangement is great
Love this 2018 SCV Closer mello tribute quartet.
Personally I love the end of I Know Where I've Been performed by Signature but man is this clean
LOVE IT gave me the chills
I have chills EVERYWHERE
And they just know that they nailed it, too.
I’ve watched this about 15 times and it isn’t getting old
WOW! That actually gave me the CHILLS without WARNING!
One of my favorite barbershop songs
damn, that ending is crunchy as hell, i love it
Literally the best barbershop group
A toss up between these guys, Crossroads, and Vocal Spectrum for me

@@jeremy.sarmie I love to see VS's name thrown around on TH-cam. I had the privilege of being in music school with those guys at the inception of the group and get to know them well. Amazing singers and even better guys!
most satisfying A Major Last Chord I've heard all day!
Angels wept when they heard this. Simply amazing.
Finally some good content (just kidding, but I do love seeing barbershop on here!)
That last A... what lung capacity. An epic rendition!
It would be great to hear Jacob's take on a barbershop standard.
This gave me goosebumps.
I really enjoyed their presence at our Youth Barbershop festival. :)
Chills and tears!!
Just wish you’d started this at the beginning of the false tag, but it’s still spectacular
That #5 gave me chills
is it sad that i’ve listened to so many posts from so many barbershop singers that i’m just like numb to it? like i know i could never do it but it’s just like “yeah that normal”
Got a love the basses hair
An historical moment for sure.
This is a great one!
Goosebumps.
That baritone lick at the end
Their highest singer and lowest singer look like they switched bodies
The guy singing the high A for 9 bars have 5 lungs
notre-daamn that was sick
Truly the greatest tag
