    It's amazing that little chuck can withstand the force of turning. In metalworking, a chuck capable of holding 15" is huge.

    Very fine piece of work realized from a good design Marius. Outtakes and me: "Eff You" quite common, the fumes pouring out my ears frequent, and where did it go most of the time. But it's still enjoyable work. Remember the mental simulation never has out takes, that is a real world phenomenon and mostly for TH-cam is left on your laptops editing app floor. We like your bravery showing those moments. Thanks. ( Good luck with the return to school )

    If you should strip out the treads in the holes may I suggest using a threaded insert to hold the rubber stoppers. They are more expensive than the "T" nuts but they hold very well and stay straight. Since they are a little pricey, I'd just use them to repair a stripped hole. Remember to keep the jaws in balance by placing one directly opposite the repair.

    Hello, two questions:
    1. Can the jaws be mounted directly to the chuck, instead of to the accessory jaws?
    2. For the holes tapped into the plywood, did you harden the threads with CA glue?

    • @MariusHornberger
      @MariusHornberger  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, mounting them directly should work and no, I didn't strengthen the threads in any way.

    Hello Marius. I enjoy your videos and find the content to be both informative and entertaining. However, I wouldn't rely on the plywood to hold the screws when they are used repeatedly. Over time the holes will eventually become worn out. You could expand the "T-nut" holding idea by cutting channels in the back of the plywood plates sized to fit some flat-bar. Then just mark and tap the flat-bar to fit the screws and rubber contact pieces you already have. I would hate to see anything along the lines of your dust-collector mishaps happen while you were working at the lathe.

    Theoretisch könntest du auch Holzeinschraubmuttern verwenden, die sind sowas wie grobe Einschraubgewindehülsen, die man in entsprechende Platten eindrehen kann :-) (umgangssprachlich Rampamuffen)
    Gibts auch in M5 und brauchen weit weniger Platz als die Einschlagmuttern
    Das einzige was man da beachten muss, dass man die Löcher wo man die Muttern reindreht, gerade bohrt... und evtl. mit bissl Epoxidharz sichern ;-)

    • @MariusHornberger
      @MariusHornberger  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stimmt. Leider gibt's die in unseren Baumärkten nicht. Müsste sie bestellen.

    • @Gustl-gl5us
      @Gustl-gl5us 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      derKarl Ich denke dass das Gewinde im Holz absolut ausreichend ist. Sind ja "nur" Seitenkräfte, nichts was die Schraube axial rauszieht. Bei 15mm Plattenstärke und der entsprechenden Schraubenlänge mache ich mir da keine Sorgen. Zudem verteilt sich ja die Spannkraft auf mehrere 'Door Stops from the Hardware Store' ^^ Grüße

    • @derKarl_stp
      @derKarl_stp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ausreichend ja, nur nützt sich Holz ab... und dann kriegen die evtl. im falschen Moment zu viel Spiel... einmal nicht genau das Gewinde erwischt und du hast ein Loch wo die Schraube nimmer hält
      und Marius, wir haben hier einen Werkzeugfachhandel fürs Gewerbe der auch an privat verkauft... und der hat die lagernd... derartige Händler gibts sicher auch bei dir in der Gegend (wo sonst kaufen Möbelbauer ihre Sachen wenn sie nicht bei Würth und Co. Kunde sind)
      P.S. in M5 müsste ich sie hier aber auch bestellen... und da fängt die Suche an... der Händler könnte zwar welche für mich ordern aber das dauert halt bis deren Produzent wieder nachliefert ;)

    • @superdau
      @superdau 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Solange man aufpasst, das Gewinde richtig zu erwischen seh ich kein Problem die Schrauben direkt ins Holz zu schrauben. Die haben wahrscheinlich so sogar weniger Spiel als wenn sie in eine Mutter (egal ob "normal", Einschlag- oder Einschraubmuttern) geschraubt werden.
      Ich würde empfehlen die *Gewinde direkt mit einer vorne mehrfach angefeilten Schraube/Gewindestange zu schneiden*. Dann hat man 100% Passgenauigkeit. Das Gewinde, das ein Gewindeschneider schneidet, ist etwas größer als die zugehörige Schraube, sonst würde man bei Metall eine Schraube nie ins Innengewinde bekommen. Bei Holz ist das aber nicht notwendig. Außerdem hat ein "Schraubengewindeschneider" auch den Vorteil, dass man gar kein Gewindeschneideset braucht (obwohl es für's Starten des Gewindes praktisch ist).
      Wegen der Festigkeit würde ich mir keine Sorgen machen. Ich habe mal testweise Zylinderkopfschrauben (also flache Unterseite) bis zum Anschlag und weiter in Holz geschraubt. Es ist jedes Mal die Schraube im Holz verschwunden und hat im Endeffekt das Holz gespalten bevor das Gewinde ausgerissen ist (bei Sperrholz könnte das anders aussehen, aber sicher nicht weniger stabil). +Marius Hornberger, vielleicht könntest du das mal testen?

    • @derKarl_stp
      @derKarl_stp 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sperrholz hat den Vorteil, dass es 90° verleimte Schichten hat... und ja, das hält sehr gut, sicher mag auch der Sitz bei Metallgewinde mit Metallmutter lockerer sein, allerdings bieten die Verbundmuffen halt den Vorteil ein äußerst beständiges Gewinde zu haben
      es ist nicht falsch wie Marius das gemacht hat, das wollte ich auch nicht dass es so klingt, sondern es war lediglich auf die Einschlagmuttern aus seinem Video bezogen... die Alternative dazu wären die Verbundmuffen gewesen, ;)
      dass es stabil ist, das bestätige ich dir gerne... kann man sogar mit einem Auszugtest bzw. entsprechendem Drehmomentschlüssel und ein paar Karosseriescheiben testen

    The M5 screw: M stands for Metric, and the 5 is the outer diameter in millimeters ;)

    • @nicolek4076
      @nicolek4076 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which is half a centimetre. At 2.54 centimetres to the inch, it's 0.58 inches.

    • @barrygerbracht5077
      @barrygerbracht5077 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uh no.... the nearest inch size is 3/16" or 0.188" (4.8mm). 5mm = 0.197"

    • @micahlazdavis1039
      @micahlazdavis1039 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a metric bolt it has a different pitch than standard bolts so there is no equivalent. M5 is 5mm x 1 mm, or a thread every millimeter. A standard bolt would be in threads per inch, which varies.

    • @stefanvanreeth5719
      @stefanvanreeth5719 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your math is not the same as mine :p
      1 inch = 2.54 cm
      1 cm = 1/2.54 inches = 0,393700787 inches
      0.5 cm = 0.393700787/2 inch = 0,196850394 inches
      => 0.197" it is. But as Barry stated, that bolt size doesn't exist. 3/16" is indeed the closest.

    Never like the idea of threaded wood, you could router a groove in the underside of the jig, and bonded a metal strip in, and threaded that.

    • @superdau
      @superdau 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Metal screws threaded into wood work very well. 15mm of threaded birch plywood is must likely even more dureable than a thin metal strip on the back and much less work to build.
