  • (16 May 1960) The Queen was at London Airport to see her mother off on a 6,000-mile flight to Salisbury. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's tour to the Rhodesias and Nyasaland was planned to last three weeks, and perhaps the most notable engagement of her visit would be the official opening of the great Kariba Dam. ® Salisbury now, and the Governor-General, Lord Dalhousie, led the official welcome and made the presentations to Her Majesty. The Guard of Honour was found by the First Battalion, the Royal Rhodesia Regiment. Salisbury, the Federal capital, had turned out in full force to give the Queen Mother the friendliest of greetings, and the crowds in the streets were estimated to number 60,000, probably the biggest ever seen here.

The airport building is still there, but a larger one has replaced it. The buildings in the parade, including town hall still stand. I recognised them immediately. My father would have been about 8 and my mother 2 in the year of the Queen Mother's visit, so it's really my grandparents' generation who still speak of it.

@Kira They didn't exactly have a choice. Britain abandoned its most loyal colony to score points on the international stage, it was betrayal of the highest order especially after everything Rhodesia contributed in the war effort!

@Kira “illegally breaks away” is a weird way to say Europeans have no dominion outside of their tasteless, small violent countries

@@apoiujdba0-9u No apartheid on anything like the scale as practised in South Africa. Rhodesia could have become such a success as a country of blacks and whites co-operating together, but the lefties were determined not to give compromise and moderation a chance, so the 1979 government, elected as a result of elections deemed to be free and fair, with Abel Muzorewa as prime minister, was not recognised. Maggie Thatcher bowed to the pressure of all the one-party dictatorships in Africa, and socialists and liberals in the West, and Rhodesia's fate was sealed.

In 1960, I was working for the FBC in Salisbury and assisted with the outside broadcast of the official opening of the Karina Dam by the Queen Mother.

I wore that RRR uniform, albeit only as a cadet. The BSAP mounted troops are fantastic. It was a different era & the Britannia is nothing like anything we fly in today.
