The Gooden-Nahome family envisioned a serene home on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica and discovered a remarkable site with sweeping ocean views. However, the site presented a significant challenge: it was predominantly a steep slope, with ocean views only visible from the upper-mid portion. Viewing this as an opportunity rather than a constraint, the architect crafted an architectural response that suited these unique conditions.
Initially, the architect considered traditional techniques used in nearby buildings, such as constructing large retaining walls and cutting back the soil to create a level area for the house. However, the architect decided to take a different approach. Instead of imposing on the natural landscape, we chose to lift the house on a series of piloti. This decision allowed the slope, earth, vegetation, water, and wildlife to flow naturally beneath the structure, giving the house a floating appearance above the hillside.
By elevating the house, the architect avoided the high costs associated with building soil retention walls and created a delicate intervention that respects the natural terrain. This common-sense solution not only preserved the site's integrity but also provided spectacular ocean views from the key location on the site. The result is a home that harmoniously integrates with its environment, offering breathtaking vistas and a profound connection to the natural beauty of the Pacific Coast.
