That one thing positive about having dogs, is a really, REALLY big thing. The security they bring is priceless.

It wasn't negative at all! It was the truth about many of the challenges of traveling with animals in general. Many people with dogs on the road romance it without talking about challenges. You clearly love you fur-babies and you were happy to build them into your road-life. The doggy voices at the end, so cute.

We have 6 cats & 8 dogs. Most of them rescue animals. Granted I have two daughters and two grandkids living with my wife and I so if I broke it down, we would have two cats and 4 dogs that are ours. Each and every one of them have special needs through the trauma they have been through before they became a part of our family. I wouldn't sacrifice any one of them to travel. I would still travel but make sure they were comfortable and as always, knowing they are loved and protected. I think you guys are awesome taking into consideration your pets needs and fears. I have spent many decades collecting abandoned animals from truck stops and rest areas where people just dump them out and leave. Breaks my heart. But you two are awesome. Thanks for being you! Now I will go and pour another drink .

Hey! So I train dogs and have even worked with some wolves (and am also building out my skoolie - love your vids) so I hope I can help with the anxiety thing. So there are 3 kinds of bark collars. The one that most people use are the e-collars - little zap. While those work for some training, they kinda have a reverse effect on anxiety...can sometimes make it worse. The second kind would be ones that make a high-frequency beep when the dogs bark...which most dogs ignore. Third, and best, in my opinion, is one that uses smell (remember a dogs sense of smell is some 40 times stronger than ours). They come with a little canister of citrus that sprays whenever the dog barks (dogs don't really like the smell). Next level there are some that have a little bit of lavender mixed in with the citrus, which can have a calming effect. Some added pluses are the fact that when the collar sprays it sounds a lot like a person telling the dog tho shhh. So, I've seen a blind dog wake up, howl, hear the shh sound from her collar, then lay down with a look like oh, you're over there haha. And best, when the dogs get all excited and bark just before you come home, you get to walk into a refreshing citrusy clean smell ;) anyways, just food for thought. Hope it helps

Also, my pup has the exact opposite reaction with my drone.....he thinks it's a giant chew toy that he gets to chase and try to snatch out of the air. I can't fly it with him around without him running underneath and barking at the sky like a mad dog. I've kinda opted not to work on that cuz it's very entertaining to sit at the park, fly around a bit and watch him go nuts over it...guess I'll probably have to at some point

With all pets, loyalty goes two ways as well as love----and you two obviously recognize that and respond in kind. They know their people and know you're taking care of them and they return that with being your security team. I sit here watching them being cared for and realize I have this silly smile on my face. As I age, I feel more and more sympathy for animals trying to cope with us crazy humans.

My husband and I are converting a transit bus, and we have two dogs! A small dachshund breed and a Great Dane! A large bus was our only option, because losing our babies was never an option. Thank you for this video. Clarification was amazing on my own worries and concerns. You had such great tips and conversation on the subject. Haven’t seen a video on this yet! So thank you!

Thank you for doing an HONEST dog talk!! Im planning on living fulltime in my bus when i get it on the road again and wouldnt think of NOT taking my dog with me...The heat thing always worries me- do you run the evap cooler off your solar? For this reason Im also considering a separate bank of solar (or at least 1-2 spare smaller panels)that can be put in th sun while i park in the shade...Its also making me have anxiety over whether to spend a shite load on some kind of special paint for the roof etc to aid insulation...Im in Australia too btw. LOVE the nanny cam for having to leave them at home too! Wish people were this honest about having kids in a bus ;-) The note on the door is a reat idea too. Happy travels to you all!

Great video, thank you! My husband and I with our 3 large dogs (60 lb, 70 lb, 85 lb puppy) recently started living full time in our 26’ travel trailer. We’re hopping to transition to a Bus soon. 2 of the 3 dogs have separation anxiety. The largest and youngest (just about 1 year old now) is the worst one and he will bark those short high pitched anxious barks constantly. There have been times he’s gone on for hours. The other just likes to hide while we’re gone. The third dog doesn’t care, she’s just chill. We’ve got a sedative from the vet if we really feel we need it and calming CBD chews we picked up in the pet store but we don’t use either one very often. So far we never leave them alone in the trailer at the campgrounds. If we need to leave them alone we take them in the car with us and leave them there. They are slowly getting better at being left alone and we leave the alone in the car for various lengths of time so they get to practice: getting gas and snacks here, run through the grocery store there, sit down restaurant dinner there. It helps if there is lots of exercise first to tire them out. Mental stimulation is helpful too though can be harder to achieve. We also try not to reappear during the barking, as that will reinforce it, but sometimes it can’t be helped so we try to ignore it and only actively reward the quiet waiting, with lots of pets and praise.

We're not fulltime and our nine lb. fur baby is non-shedding but understand challenges of rv ing with pup in all type weather conditions. Various geographic conditions can be troublesome- try camping in Valley of Fire state park in Nevada ( not to be missed) but air id conditions and red flour type dust is everywhere. Also, most anywhere in southern Wyoming endless stickers from all types vegetation. Last year, plucked over one hundred stickers clinging to tuffs of dog hair.....uggg! Godsend is doggie wet wipes available at most Walmarts in lemon verbena or lavender scents are great for quick freshening between baths, muddy paws, etc. Thanks again for another terrific video!

I hope everyone waits for the end!!! Hysterical! We do weekend RVing in a 32 foot travel trailer. Our Beagle Chihuahua mix is a rescue and he too has separation anxiety. The best thing I've found is to give him a Polkadog Chicken Strip (natural jerky) right before we leave. It keeps him busy until after we're gone and reduces the stress of our leaving. I should say he doesn't need this at home, only when we travel. It's very pricey but I think it's a good quality jerky. It's JUST dehydrated chicken.

I share my space (1,800 s.q.f. house, we will be downsizing soon) with a 60lbs Boxer. Dolly, is everything your two are, all wrapped up one. She is loved and is my only tresure. Where I go,
she goes. Now you know that you will have to include their comments from now on after this video. Love to here what have to say bout living with guys and your good, bad, and ugly sides. That will be fun for sure. Got to keep their comments coming. Maybe a box van convention is in my future. Your guys are real from the begining and tell it like it is. Love you guys all four of you.👍🖖

While I'm not a Skoolie, I love your videos and my first dog, that I bought as an adult, was a Cocker Spaniel... thank you for making it work for them! No questions there's drawbacks at times, but just remember the JOY - time flies... my sweet 13yr old Basset just went to the Bridge last night... I will miss her so, but I know she lived such a great live from the time I rescued her when she was 10yrs old... so perhaps if you have moments of frustrations.. just remember, time with them will fly by much too fast!

Good vid. It's just a guess but the drone may emit a frequency that is just more intense to tuco . Probably cause he can hear higher frequencies better ,or just more sensitive to them. That's my best guess. You didn't mention how they react to thunderstorms, or i missed it. Have you thought of getting them those booties/shoes for when its muddy outside, those may help with the mud issue.

Thank you so much for this video! I am debating buying a bus to live in with my 2 dogs. They are both rescues and unfortunately, are both on the "dangerous breed" list. I goth them when I had a house, but after a rough divorce, I ended up homeless with the two dogs. We survived last year by staying in dog friendly hotels, couch crashing and eventually ended up on a farm. They love it here! Unfortunately, there are some issues and I need to move again... Apartment prices are insane here and their breeds make it nearly impossible to find something, even with a Dr's note that they are emotional support animals. My boy is very laid back and a couch potato, but my girl is more high energy and barky. I hate the thought of having to split them up in order to find an apartment, especially after all that we've already been through.

Great video again, those 15 things we can relate for sure. We always leave the radio on when we leave her behind. Might help against anxiety a bit. We leave and come back without "goodbyes" or "We are back" drama. I'm glad she is not a barker but not much you can change about that. She will bark fiercely when a stranger comes up to the RV, we love that part, no need for a doorbell!

One of my dogs has serious hearing loss too. If I put her out in the yard now, she often won't hear me call her. In the dark, flashing the porch light always gets her. I recently figured out that she can hear a whistle though. In the yard, I can just whistle with my mouth, but I think if I were to take her on a hike, I would take a pocket whistle - like a police whistle with me. Might be worth exploring for your girl too as a backup plan?

Great video! Always enjoy your work. I am about halfway through my conversion and plan to travel around the states with my small dog. She is not happy being left alone. I have used a bark collar on her at times, when I left her home alone. It is one that puts out a high pitched sound if she barks. She is getting deaf so less barking from hearing strangers at the door. I am building her a kennel over the front right wheel well so that she can ride safely and still see me when I'm driving. Yet to be determined how that will work out. I like your doggy camera idea and will check out your link on Amazon.

I am planning to eventually do a bus (or van) conversion and my biggest regret is that it won't be done in time to share it with my elderpup Bjorn, and eldercat Kwitwee. Bjorn's 16 & 1/2, Kwitwee's 18 & 1/2, we adopted both at 6 months, and I just can't imagine travelling (or life in general) without them. I'm so thankful to you guys, and all of the other nomadic channels out there, who share your pet experiences. I honestly don't think it ever would've occurred to me that I could travel full time with my pets. On the bright side, my other dog Pixel is only 7ish, so lots of time to spend exploring with her.

Hi Zac and Tiff! My bf and I are thinking of doing buslife. But a little smaller bus, because of the driverslicense here in Europe. We've got a big dog, like Tuco size, and two cats. I know the dog would absolutely love to travel with us, but the cat's might not. We've got one cat thats 8 years old now and I think he might like it, but I would be very concerned of him wondering off and losing him, cause a leash isn't something he would accept (I think) And the other cat is about 17 (rescue cat, so we don't now for shure) and he wouldn't like it, she hates traveling as we do now.
So we don't know how we are going to manage them. But first we need to find the right vehicle for us, we still got time to figure it out :)

Great vid! The need for extra water was good info. I havent started my bus build yet but needed the info for my 2 travelling cowdog companions.
Question... I used to travel with a horse who wouldnt tie so my dad welded brackets to the side of the horse trailer that held four- 12 foot fence panels so no matter where I went, horse-that-wouldnt-tie had his own pen to hang in. I was thinking I could do the same for an exterior dog run. The panels could hang on the driver side and when I needed them up they would attach to the passenger side of the bus- one at the front so I could let them out the door and then two running the length of the bus and the last one attach back to the bus maybe mid way down. Four- 6 or 8 foot panels (one with a gate) would give them extra space to run.
Any thoughts? Ever seen anyone else do that?
Edited to add: crud. They can go under the bus. Can you beleive Dumb Me just thought of that?? 🙄

Your so considerate of your fur baby’s, it shows that you are both very nice people. My dog has separation issues too his doctor said I should put him on antidepressants 😳 I haven’t done that because I’m worried that it wouldn’t be good for him.

Nice channel and topic. Just subscribed and watched your first night video. Remember, the only thing to fear is fear itself:) Was wondering what flea and tick you use for the dogs and are ticks a problem from your experience?

This is so helpful. I'm thinking about converting a short bus and I have a pitbull. My biggest worry is breed specific legislation that bans pitties. Right now I own a house alone and I have to be away from him a lot to work 2 jobs. One of the reasons I want to switch to bus life is spending more time with him ❤

LOL @ the dog chat at the end of your video - so cute! ;-) We have a 14 year old Shih Tzu (Gracie) that can't hold it through the night, even after a long walk (sigh), so we keep pee pads near the exit. She is starting to have some difficulties with the RV steps. Like Frankie, she has separation anxiety... then sounds like she's being tortured if left alone (we call it her "crazy bark") lol. She'll settle down after her "outburst". Do I feel safer in the RV with her - not really! lolol ;-) But she's been a great companion, loves walks and going places! As always, enjoy your videos! Hugs from GA!

There may be a very high pitch or frequency on the drone kinda like a dog whistle that Tuco might be hearing. Great video guys and hope y'all are doing well...:)

Love your videos and watching your journey. Tuco may be hearing the high pitched noise that will emanate from the drones electronics and motors. It is like the sound in the ears of someone that has tinnitus. I have it mildly and it is anointing.

About your dogs anxiety, they do have a vest you can put over the dog to calm him down, and also did you ever think about looking for some kind of chew tablets for anxiety?

One thing that may be really different after you move into a bus/van with your pets is that you are now ‘home’ ALL the time. Previously, you probably had a day job, so you left your pets home alone while you were at work. Now that you are together all the time, their behavior may shift too, as they are really enjoying being with you. So when you leave, even just to go into a grocery store, your absence is felt more. Does that make any kind of sense?

    • @Rolling_Vistas
      @Rolling_Vistas  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Absolutely! We think this may be the reason Tuco is developing separation anxiety

I think about a furry travel companion occasionally but I have decided that the flexibility to leave and not worry about their comfort still outweighs my desire to have one. Another clever and fun video.

I'm planning on starting bus life next week after years of preparation. I have two 45-lb dogs AND one cat - AND we're moving into a smaller bus! But, we're all good in small spaces together, and my cat lives half outside. My biggest (and really only worry) is keeping them warm in the winter when I'm away at work. Any suggestions? I'm too scared to keep a woodstove burning or propane stove fuming when I'm not there, and I likely won't have enough power (esp. in winter) to run a space heater or anything like that. Although, I do have an extra car battery and inverter I could use just for the space heater, but don't know how long it would last at 1k-1.5kW/h!
