  • In this video we talk about about how much water we use in our Skoolie while dry camping with us and our two dogs. We have 63 gallons of fresh water built in, with some overflow protection.
We also talk about some ways we work to help make our water last as long as we can! Hope this video is useful... So let us know how much water you use while boondocking!

This may be a long comment, but I wanted you to understand my purpose in sending it. I never watched any videos until I retired ( I'm 72 now). The van life videos were fun and it gave me an appreciation for the nomadic lifestyle you now enjoy and a renewed respect for young people today. While I have no "need" to conserve water, (I live a comfortable life) your video made me think about my own wasteful ways. I will be changing some of my habits and that is due to your thoughtful, fun and informative video.

I have two tips you might want to try to conserve water.
1- research a hair regime called “no-poo” hair care. I have not used shampoo for over a year. It sounds weird but it works. The most I do is scrub my head with about a teaspoon of conditioner every few days. Less water and less products.
    2. I know we all grew up being taught to get a big pot of water boiling to cook pasta. I saw this on Facebook a few years ago and it is a wonderful idea. You start with a frying pan (probably not cast iron), add about 1-2 inches of COLD water and salt and pasta. Bring to a boil and cook until done. I can usually cook it for 1or 2 minutes less than directed. You can let the water evaporate as you cook . It saves time and water and propane to cook pasta this way.

I know that this is popular in the UK, but alot of us Brits put a plastic bowel in the sink filled with water and we use the water in the bowel to wash our pots, I hope that this is helpful. Best wishes and happy travels from the UK. 🤗💓

I've done that all my life. We always had double sinks too. Never had a problem. We used to throw our dish water on our passion fruit plant and it was so prolific we used to give it to our neighbors. My parents are from former British colonies (St. Kitts, St. Lucia).

I love your videos! If you’d like to take long hot showers but not use any additional water, I have an idea for you. Would you be interested in installing a valve in your shower mixer that can recirculate the water? Use the shower like normal for the first minute or two to soap up and get clean. Let that water drain until the soap is gone. Then flip the recirculation valve to pull water from a secondary five gallon tank. Pump that water through a tankless water heater and back through the shower’s mixer valve. You also would install an electrically open/close 3” valve on the drain line to feed the shower drain water into this same five gallon tank. This same five gallons of water will flow through your shower head indefinitely. Once you are clean, the water that is collected in that five gallon tank will remain pretty clean. The idea is that you can stand there and take a 20 minute hot shower and only use five gallons of water. You can use this same tank of water for a few days and then use that water to run the swamp cooler. Take care.

A common misconception that I've picked up on is if you have a composting toilet and don't have black water, your wastewater doesn't smell bad. As you mentioned, this is clearly not the case. Grey water stinks. Letting it go on the ground is definitely not a pleasant idea.
Now can we talk about installing La Croix tanks on board? 🤙

I don't know how much it would cost but if you was to filter your grey tank and reuse it for just your shower that could help. It would depend on how well it was filtered . I know there are overland builders that do it. It you had a setup/system to harvest ground water that would help to. Of course it would add to your cost of living, the filters and how often you went through them, it is a option though. Good vid.

I'm from the Virgin Islands. Saving water is a must here. I can shower and wash my hair with 2 gallons of water. The trick is to use as little water possible to lather. The bulk of the water is to rinse.

I like to boondock in National Forest campgrounds and other places that have outhouses. This way I avoid using my black water tank, completely. Like you, I use paper plates but then I dispose of them in the campfire. I wipe out all of my pans I used to prepare my meal with a paper towel and then it can go in the campfire as well. When my late wife was here, she would not go as extreme as I do but she loved the National Forest campgrounds, therefore she would mitigate her objections. In one place we liked to go, Town was about thirty miles away and the one gas station owner would let us use his sewer clean-out to dump our holding tanks as well as get fresh water in the front. He only asked that we buy our gas there. We were glad to comply.

That spray nozzle on your sink is a godsend when it comes to washing hair in the sink. When I lived out in my trailer... boondocking, if you will, I was by myself, and would use 10 gallons in a week. Composting toilet, yes... showers were done at the camp ground in town once a week... All my onboard water was for was drinking, cooking and dishes.

It's Official! You guys are/have my favorite RV Channel! I haven't watched all your videos yet so I may have missed this if you've talked about it. FIRE!!!
    1. Electrical!
    2. Cooking!
    3. Chimney!
    4. Engine!
    5. Chemical?
    6. Using Fireworks indoors! ;-)
Have a Plan for wherever you are in or out of the bus and if you are awake or asleep. I'll use Your bus as an example since it is what we can see.
Rule #1. Get out of the bus! Do Not stay in the bus and try to fight the fire. Smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide detectors are a must.
    2. School buses have escape windows and doors. Try to maintain them in your design.
    3. Try to have an exit at both ends and the middle. In your case, install a hatch in the wall next to your bed so you can go into your mechanical room and out the wheelchair door.
    4. Keep the largest fire extinguishes you can handle in the mechanical room and main entrance so you can grab them as you leave. Do Not keep them where the fire may originate.
    5. Get out and then worry about the fire. Keep the doors and windows closed to suffocate the fire.
    6. I would use CO2/Carbon Dioxide extinguishers for the following reason. No Mess like with a powder extinguisher or water and the CO2 will replace the oxygen to suffocate the fire. I would install a hatch in the exterior wall that I could open from outside so I could inject the CO2 into the bus. You can use Halon al$o. Run a pipe along the ceiling with nozzles along the way and turn it on as you leave. You don't want it to be automatic as it will suffocate You Also!
    7. YOU, need to get out fast and Not focus on getting the Dogs out so they should be sleeping with you or set up a bed in the mechanical room.
    8. Have a Battery Kill Switch that is accessible from the outside. You can install it in the positive or negative wire. Same for turning off the gas if applicable.
That should be enough to get a discussion going. Same goes for first aid in the wilderness. Practice using it so you have a plan and don't have to learn while one of you is bleeding out!

Ahhh, rookies to primitive camping (AKA boondocking). To save water; Dish washing - rinse in a dishpan with an inch of water. Shower/hand wash - wet/soap/rinse (short spurts of H2O). Coffee - make what you will drink (ya seem to get this). Dogs - dedicate a 5 gal. jug (or 2), install a spigot, keep outside (over bowl) (try carrying water for a couple horses while boondocking, I do. 2 55 gal. drums in the truck bed.)

Love seeing the specifics of what boondocking actually takes. We are still debating on how much to have in the bus for water tanks, though we are leaning to at least 100 gallons of fresh as we would like to be able to boondock for long stretches. Heck, we were even thinking about 200 gallons, though that is probably overkill =)

We are a family of 2 and have 2 cats. We live in a schoolie as well. We have a dishwasher and a washing machine (they eat water but is good mashines. Our full size dishwasher uses 9 liters off water 2,377 gallons and I do bigger items by hand. Our washingmashine can do 8 kgs and uses around 50 liters 13,2 gallons pr wash) with 600-liter water (158 gallons) it keeps us around 13-14 days. We don't have other drinks in the house, we make our water into fizzy water with a SodaStream if we want something else. I do cook pasta or rice multiple times a week. I don't put water unnecessary down the drain. I clean with water from the sink unless it is very little then I sometimes use a cleaning wipe. We are considering upping to 800 liters, as we would like a bit more showers in the house. We dont use sanaticers either, as we are more concerned about our waste than our water use. Living in Europe.

Very good water usage video. I learned some things & I only have one thing to suggest to stretch it further. You have two dish washers on board. put the dishes on the floor & let the dogs lick them clean. then all you have left is a quick sanitizing. I'm sure I will get a lot of flack for this post but to each his own.

I am putting 200 gallons of capacity in our bus. To me it seems like one of the advantages of a skoolie is the 30,000 GVW so why not take advantage of that weight carrying capacity. Keep 50 gallons onboard while traveling and then when you get near your boon docking location top up 200 gallons. Better to have it available when needed IOW.

Nooks and Cranny's. Small jugs of water can be stored all over the bus. Save the orange juice containers and fill them. Gallon jugs of something? Save them. Maker sure you have a way to pour water into your main tank to refill or just keep a bottle near your sink. Use the bottles for the dog dishes, baths and for hiking. Save the tank water for showers and dishes. Bottle water for the cooling thingy you talked about. For my gray water situation I will be using only Eco Friendly soaps and draining the tank into the ground of a gravel and sand pit. Nature's filter system. NO FAIR EDITING! ;-)

Try putting a tub in the sink and also a plastic container big enough to dip your hands into on the edge of your sink. The tub allows me to soak prewash that way I only have to rinse. The plastic container allows me to pre-rinse my hands and when it gets dirty enough for soapy enough I pour it into my tub in the sink. You’d be amazed at how many times you can use that water until it’s actually spent. For instance when it gets near the end of it’s life you can Pre-clean something like. your dirty shoes!
I always pre-clean before washing using paper towels and may be a little bit of soap water.
If my pot has oil then I can do it last throw out that oily tub water and continue to clean… so be then rinse having some new fresh soapy water to pre-clean any other dishes etc.

one way to real save water for hair washing that does not cost much is to comb the wash in. use a half to one cup of water and comb it into the hair for the pre-rinse if needed. then put the shampoo on the comb and comb that into your hair. then use another 1/2 cup to cup of water to rinse your hair dip the comb in the water and comb through your hair wipe the comb on a towel (paper or otherwise) or something after each brush through the hair. do this until the comb comes out clean no shampoo left. The idea is to replace most of the dirt with water molecules during the pre-rinse and shampoo, then replace the shampoo molecules with water. to get grease out in a hurry you can coat your comb with baby powder and comb the baby powder into your hair and then comb it out, the baby powder will pick up the grease.

Great video, very helpful! Maybe you can give us two more information?
    1. What about the human/dog ratio? Around 70:30, 50:50, 30:70 percent? What do you estimate?
    2. Moment of truth! It would be a lot more interesting to know how often you shower than to know how often you skip a shower 😂 If you are used to showering every day, skipping 1 or 2 showers means you had between 5 and 8 showers per person. If you are used to showering once in a week, skipping 2 showers in 17 days means...🤔🤔🤔???
I love you, guys so much.😘

The dogs take up probably almost half our water. That is an estimate though.
I was afraid to disclose my van life shower habits on TH-cam , for obvious reasons 🤣 The answer...It depends on how we feel. During our recent 16 day dry camping, I did not shower even once. I did wash my hair though. This was in a suppper dry climate and wouldn’t work everywhere. Typically, I shower every 5 days when dry-camping.

Congrats on the great music! And thank you for the Lysol tip - never heard of that stuff! I normally only carry 12 gallons for me and my 10 pound dog, which doesn't include what's in my porta-potty, but I haven't tried to stretch it for longer than about 8 days.

Thank you for mentioning the gray water dumping. I think it's so gross for everyone around that some people would just let it drain out. There was one channel that said they even just dump their urine outside... 😱 I could just imagine pulling in after them and my small children running to play in a puddle or us wondering why it smells weird where we decided to picnic! I'm happy you have more respect for the environment and everyone/everything in it!

Love it! Our family consists of 2 humans 2 kitties and 1 smallish pup! Right now we’re stationary and have 46 gallons of water that last us a week and a half. We just ordered a 70 gallon water tank so hopefully we’ll be able to go two weeks or more with water 🎉

Paper Plates & Cups are our friends. We can eat meals with them and then use them in camp fires or mini-stoves. Also make finger foods. No need to clean utensils when you can just eat finger foods 4 or 5 times a week and cut down on cleaning utensils. Park near rivers and lakes. The advantages to that are obvious.

Thank you for the informative video! I am in the planning phase and trying to decide what to get. Leaning towards 42 gallons with a 30 gallon gray water tank. Great idea to have a decent back up. I am thinking 5 gallon. Keeping it light and simple. Maybe I will follow up in a year or so when it is all done and I have been on the road for a minute. I really appreciate your videos!

you can use paper plates and when your finished with them, you can use them to start your campfire assuming you can have a fire at your campsite. doing that saves you the bother of washing them

Hi, two traditional habits I saw in France: 1. swipe your plate cleanwith bread after finishing the food before washing it. 2. Use a wooden bowl with oil/ vinegar-dressing for your salads, you never need to wash it. Also beeing an European where space is thigter I would never dump on the ground. Always think of the next person coming to your spot. Save travels!

Regarding La Croix water. I had been drinking lots to wean myself off of my bad Diet Coke habit. I went to my dentist for a 6 month cleaning, and she was shocked. I had five small cavities! She knows I dislike sugary things, so she asked me what had changed in my eating/drinking habits. When I mentioned drinking La Croix water she freaked. She said if people don’t rinse their mouths out with plain water right afterwards, the extreme acidity from the lime essence, etc. has been causing a huge problem with cavities! Whaaat? I viewed La Croix as just bubbly water, but she said out of all drinks it is the worst for the teeth! That was a painful-and expensive-lesson to learn. So bottom line, thoroughly rinse your mouth out with plain water if you enjoy a La Croix water.

I've found that drinking wine with my dinner, saves me 750ml of water per day. No, seriously, It's just me in a Land Rover with a roof top tent and a kitchen set up. My toilet is the original composting toilet; A shovel and good balance. I bathe, with organic camping soap, in rivers, lakes and streams. I use, for cooking, drinking, and cleaning, about 14 gallons per week. (about the same as the wine =-/ ) One of the biggest things I found was the importance of the shape of my water containers. I don't yet have one stationary tank, but I'm working on it, I got the same blue, square, 7 gallon containers that you showed. I did it for the spigot. I could only fit two in the space in the truck. That's one week out on the road. By changing my tanks to upright 6 gallon jerry cans from Walmart, I could now fit four. I added a plastic spigot I got at a brewing supply store for $0.59 to one lid that I swap from tank to tank as needed. With the inevitable dinning out occasionally, and a few morning Starbuck runs 24 gallons will last me and I can now stay out for 4 weeks, without breaking out my water filtration set up. See you guys out there.

Get an inductive hot plate and one of those cheap 16qt stainless stockpots with lid from walmart. poke a hole. Attach copper tube. Distill any water source several gallons at a time.

Great video! This is my favorite channel! I will be buying a bus in the next 6 months to a year. I think i may go with around 120 gallons of fresh water. Now that you are 8 months in i would love to see a video on how the solar is working out. I think i will have to have a/c on mine.

A few people have mentioned rain catchment system. If possible, install another tank and maybe a small filter for it. The water could be used to wash the dogs, water plants, pre-rinse dishes, wash clothes etc.

Love you video. I've read that dishwashers use less water. Of course, they're a drain on power. I don't know much about my bus yet as it's been with the mechanic since the day I bought it. But I have a pretty steep learning curve ahead.

Very interesting and informative. I had also planned an occasional overnight at a campground/rev park/motel to shower, do laundry, refill water, etc. You have to go shopping for groceries anyway...might as well. Glad that idea is proven, so thanks! I was planning on carrying a few nesting plastic tubs with me to catch rain water where possible, too. Pour it through a Berkey and enjoy. Now if only you could teach the dogs to dowse for water!

We have tentatively slated two 52 gallon clean tanks and two 60 gallon grey water tanks in our build. Our family is myself, wifie, and one puppy (grown dog, but you know how it goes....) We have a dry toilet, no black water, no black water tank. We're figuring a re-supply at 20ish days or so. Not done with the build, but getting closer every day.
